carl Posted October 16, 2014 Report Posted October 16, 2014 Hello all I am in the last phase of the purchase of a Mooney 20 E. I believe this one will go through. I must travel to California and pick it up. I am planning on my Christmas vacation from work, I get two weeks off. Then Northeast from San Francisco to lake tahoe--salt lake (Malad City vor) --rock springs vor--Medicine Bow vor then Im out of the mountains and on to altoona . About 1900 miles over 14 days if needed VFR only--daylight I need some time in a Mooney,I am looking for anyone who will let me fly with them, I do not have to be PIC . I'm looking to familiarize myself with the aircraft before I head out to California where I will get some duel time. An older Mooney M 20 E is best But anything is great. I will pay for your costs etc. CFI's with a Mooney Yes (cant find any ) I live in central Pa ,near Altoona Pa. I have flown about a hour in a 64 M20C a long time ago. I have about 157 hours , I owned a Grumman Traveler AA5 , I have a high performance sign off . Flew a Piper Tomahawk las t weekend , its kind of different . Im VFR not instrument rated Any thought on any part of this ? Carl Quote
Jerry 5TJ Posted October 17, 2014 Report Posted October 17, 2014 Suggestions: Hire a CFII to fly east with you. Fly a few hours before you head east following route 80. Day VMC is ok - I've flown that route in my "E" and more recently in a "C" model. Be ready to wait out Wx. You'll learn a vast amount on the trip, it is a great Christmas present for yourself. 1 Quote
carusoam Posted October 17, 2014 Report Posted October 17, 2014 It is considered 'normal' to do cross country transition training to keep from making simple critical errors. One day of local transition training is also normal. Lots of take offs and landings and general BFR type stuff. My hired gun came with me from TX to NJ. We saw some high winds, IMC and a bit of icing on the last piece. It took two days to complete a one day trip. What's the chance of a regional jet over-running the runway we were at for a fuel stop? He went back using a standby ticket on south west. Do you have transition training in your plan? My experience, -a- Quote
mooneygirl Posted October 17, 2014 Report Posted October 17, 2014 I would recommend Don Kaye, master CFI. http://donkaye.com/donkaye.com/Welcome.html Don is based in California, but flies all over the country doing transition stuff. Maybe you could talk him into flying to you in his Bravo! Jolie 1 Quote

Joe Zuffoletto Posted October 17, 2014 Report Posted October 17, 2014 When I bought my Encore many years ago I had not flown Mooneys in years, so I hired a CFII to fly with me on the ferry trip from Minneapolis to the SF Bay Area. We flew three legs in two days and encountered conditions that allowed me to experience and learn about EVERY system on the aircraft, including the TKS. Having that knowledgeable fellow in the right seat made me feel much more confident once I put him on his airline flight at KOAK and flew back to my home field. And +1 for Don Kaye. He did my BFRs and IPCs for years when I lived in NorCal. Quote
