neilpilot Posted July 31, 2014 Report Posted July 31, 2014 Yesterday my partner landed our 65C at KMRC and reported a pronounced nose gear shimmy. Haven't had this problem in this aircraft since purchase 200 hours ago. Wondering if anyone familiar with the area cound suggest a Mooney-savy A&P in the Beaufort NC area? Quote
carusoam Posted July 31, 2014 Report Posted July 31, 2014 Search button will reveal the source and solution to that challenge. Wear is a terrible thing for 50 year old machines. There is a method to measure the looseness of the nose wheel/truss. You may even be able to tell by steering feel/slop? Easier to check the log books. No changes within the last 5000 hours? Fortunately there are people that support us like LASAR. Speak with Shari??? Unfortunately it may be expensive. Depends on who you are... Best regards, -a- Somebody help me with the lady's name at LASAR? Quote
robert7467 Posted July 31, 2014 Report Posted July 31, 2014 There is a possibility that you came in too fast. We had Maxwell do something to ours and it still shimmys at times. I just pull back on the yoke and its all good! Quote
neilpilot Posted July 31, 2014 Author Report Posted July 31, 2014 I'm aware of the need to evaluate the steering horn & shim wear, which can be estimated by feel (rudder slop) and left-right free play of nose gear, when on jacks. Purpose of the email was to obtain name or contact info of an A&P on or near KMRC that could evaluate the gear to confirm that there wasn't something else wrong beyond gradual wear, i.e. hardwear was loose. Wakeup Posted July 31, 2014 Report Posted July 31, 2014 Lasar has a steering horn for around $500 and it fixed my shimmy. Give them a call. They are very helpful. Thanks. Troy Quote
rbridges Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 Lasar has a steering horn for around $500 and it fixed my shimmy. Give them a call. They are very helpful. Thanks. Troy I did that last year. 4 hours of labor for my IA. Check how much play you have in your rudder. here's my thread I started earlier this year. http://mooneyspace.com/topic/11250-starting-to-get-the-dreaded-front-wheel-shimmy/#entry136576 Quote
cliffy Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 As said, probably steering horn wear but could also be low tire pressure. Check tire pressure if it's correct you'll need to find an A&P and jack it up. Hope all turns out well. There are only a few things for him to check. The vertical steering pivot bolt (the big one) needs to be torqued every 100 hrs according to a SB. Other than the remote possibility of other hardware being loose, wheel bearings and steering horn are all that is left. Quote
Alan Fox Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 I would shim the horn for play , but to answer the Question , Don't know a MSC in that area....I had a prebuy done at Hampton Roads by a shop that was pretty Mooney savvy..... Lear Stevens... Quote
