  1. The one report above mentions 'trailing black smoke on takeoff'. In most cases with misfueled planes there is often plenty of 100LL in the line, gascolator and so to do some taxi and runup, then take off. Look at the accidents in NM with the air ambulance plane and Felts, Field near Spokane. They were both misfueled but made it just off the runway a bit. Ground fuel usage is rather low, not so starting with the takeoff roll. There have been misfuel accidents where the pilot themselves put the wrong fuel in from the self serve pump, again getting back to distractions during the preflight routine. I also agree it's most astonishing if this plane was given jet fuel, much more obvious a 100LL burner. There have been instances where the wrong fuel is in the truck, that's a sneaky one.I know a pilot who took on fuel from a ground tank that was heavily contaminated with water, years ago. He noticed engine problems during the runup, went back and shut down. I'm always more suspect at a field with lighter GA traffic. That fuel in the tank likely has been there a while.
  2. Just think of the added distractions, two more passengers and the dog. Not saying that should lead to this, but I can see how the routine could get off track.
  3. I did see a backhoe on the island when I was there two years ago. It was away from town near a smaller construction site.
  4. Some early word is the plane was misfueled. That would explain it all. No sure the rest of the details.
  5. I did Daytona twice and KISM once the last two years from WI. I mostly go GPS direct, adjusting as need be for airspace and possibly weather. I like a nice straight line. Of course one isn't likely to cut through ATL or ORD class 'B' during high time. Air-Nav and 100LL.com are great for looking over fuel stops.
  6. 12 gusting to 19 from 330 while taking off on 32 isn't terrible, just a little bumpy likely. The line between very gusty winds and actual wind shear can blur somewhat. One factor can also be type of equipment one is flying. Just to analyze a takeoff somewhat, having it mostly all headwind is a good thing. High gust from a cross is more problematic. In general one would want to carry a few extra knots to deal with gusts. Don't leave the runway until you have those extra knots. One can expect some bumps. While on climb out fly the proper pitch attitude allowing the airspeed to dance around. You have the extra margin, so just take the average with the airspeed indicator. If it's a real strong wind I like to make that initial turn airborne into the wind, not downwind. As an example, taking off on runway 36 with winds from 330 at 30 knots, I'll start with a left turn. I realize you enter a 'sea of air', but I like that climb angle much more with a turn into the wind. The landing becomes another animal. For starters, one should never be 'surprised' the winds came up, check the forecast. You don't want to fly to a runway 18/36 destination with the winds 270 at 25 gusting to 33. At least if you don't have to.

  9. If this is the same pilot that ran out of fuel buzzing his house, that's some bad stuff. One has to feel for any passengers onboard and their families.
  10. I still use XM, base plan for $37 after taxes or so. I like the presentation on my 696. I consider cockpit weather a real safety asset. I may go ADS-B sometime, not really free though, since you have to get a receiver of some type. I 'suspend' my XM account at times of lower use, like right now. I will be away with work, have the annual coming up too. Once I feel the need I can get it re-activated in 15 minutes.

  13. I like smaller, uncontrolled fields, over the larger 'Class C' types, You can check some of the info at Air-Nav. One can usually get a ride or get picked up without to much of a problem,

  15. Sad indeed, prayers for the family and friends involved. It mentions they 'turned around due to bad weather'? It sounds like it may of been weather related, possible should of kept more daylight around the edge of the operating envelope.
  16. Him and his girlfriend were onboard. There was some talk of bad weather in the area, don't know if it was the exact time of their flight or another timeframe. It's not looking real good, they say the flight ended near 'Buckles Lake'.

  18. I agree, passengers don't like anything abnormal, don't blame them. Glad the daughter made it through alright. At least a 'controlled descent' is better that other alternatives, still looking for MH-370.
  19. There should be some cheap fuel in S AL, for the fuel stop. I went to KISM last Spring, all was well. If you go there check fees, I went to the older FBO, no fees and cheap fuel.
  20. The XM wx on the 696 proved it's worth again last eve as I flew the length of WI from North to South. The Southern part had some lingering T-storms, near the home field area. Most of them moved off as I flew. Throughout I was always able to keep a good divert airport available. Of course I was able to backup XM presentations with my eyeball. It also showed the presidential TFR had gone away, which Matched my preflight checks.

  23. The Concorde people have their own recommended battery charger/maintainer. You could check their site for a link. I use a more common 12 volt 'sulfator/charger/maintainer, it's cheaper too. I have pigtails on my plane, ATV, 2 motorbikes, and a 4-stroke snowmobile. I hook the plane up about once every 2 months, bring it to a 'green light'. Mine is of the Optimate series of chargers, no adverse issues.
