Anyone else fail the colorblind test?
Wildhorsesracing replied to Capitalist's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I have the same restriction and know that I have trouble distinguishing between red-green-white lights unless there is high contrast. I chuckle when my wife asks if it's ok if the PAPI lights are red! To me they look like bright (white) lights and darker (red) ones, but I can't tell if they are bright or dark until one of them changes. In the 10 yrs I have had my PPSEL I have never really wanted to fly at night anyway. My fear has always been if I got the waiver and truly got in a situation where the colors mattered, would I be risking the lives of my passengers? -
It's only a matter of time before we all run Jet-A, this is all promising news.

Flying to see the Eclipse

+1 for Triple Tree - just trying to decide if I'll fly down or take my camper and stay for the Steak dinner. -

I'll agree to that, I've had the tires squealing a few times trying to grip enough pavement to keep it on the runway in strong crosswinds. Don't forget to use differential braking if you need to keep it straight while landing in stronger crosswinds. -

I slip mine all the time, and have landed in crosswinds in excess of 20 mph - but I have a short body 'C' and do many things with mine that the average Mooney owner would cringe at. -
The South Carolina Breakfast Club is going to Triple Tree Sunday morning - anyone going? Triple Tree South Carolina Breakfast Club

N number marking size question
Wildhorsesracing replied to Spurious Moppet's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I went with the bigger numbers because they were already on mine, I thought about the smaller numbers but didn't want to have to prove it was legal every time I flew somewhere. -
Oshkosh Airventure MooneySpace Get together on Monday night

I'll be there with my wife and daughter - but we might not make it until after the concert. -
The fuel pumps are near my hangar and my Biplane is a royal PITA to fuel using the pumps. When the Biplane tank is full the overflow runs down the upper wing into the pilot's seat. The pump nozzle is bad to keep flowing after it is released so the pilot's seat in the Biplane gets a good washdown when I fill it at the pumps. Trying to mitigate this I switched to 5 gallon cans that I keep in my hangar and refill the Biplane with. When I return from a trip in the Mooney and if no one is waiting for the pumps I'll walk down to my hangar and get my 5 gallon cans to fill after I fill the Mooney. I have found that the leaky pump nozzle if left alone in the 5 gallon cans while I am buttoning up my Mooney will drain close to 1/2 a gallon. I have never tried keeping the nozzle open to see how much will flow but seeing this I might do it next time just out of curiosity. FWIW: I ALWAYS drain whatever comes out of the nozzle after the pump shuts off not because I am a CB, but because any fuel spilled on a polished Mooney is a royal B*@%!$@ch to clean up. It always stains the polish and I have to work twice as hard to get it cleaned off. So call me a scumbag or a CB but I refuse to pull that hose out until she's done draining because I don't want a wet spot. PS. It's all uphill to the pumps so I never drag it TO the pumps but I have been known to pull it back to my hangar.

A friend of mine recently took a day and flew touch and go's at 37 airports for the fun of it. Looked like great way to spend a day and practice flying. I have done Poker Runs in aircraft before but never more than a half dozen airports. Has anyone tried that in a Mooney? How many airports have you landed at in a day?
-
As a VFR only pilot I am not very worried about it unless they truly start imposing landing fees. I normally avoid the big airports because I prefer the friendliness of the smaller airports. I use flight following on long flights but with ADSB-In and my ZAON I usually get a warning about aircraft long before flight following warns me. I wonder what impact it will have on the big shows like AirVenture and Sun-N-Fun if less planes attend due to the costs involved...

FYI - The airport manager races motorcycles for fun, I had a long chat with him about racing the last time I was there. I landed last summer and they were fueling a trainer but I didn't need fuel so I don't know any more than that.

Thoughts on this 1963 M20C?
Wildhorsesracing replied to The Other Red Baron's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
You can ask any price when selling something, but finding a gullible buyer that is willing to overpay for something is always a challenge. Sounds like that is the objective of the G model advertisement. -
Every bounce counts!

Sign me up! My son-in-law's family is there and they all ride, they'd be more than happy to take us all for a tour of some of the nicer roads. This was taken last summer when we went up to ride.

That reminds me of a nice little grass strip I go to often, it has a drainage ditch 1/4 of the way down the runway, if you land before it you'll bounce back into the air. The good news is if you take off from the other end and you aren't in the air by the ditch you will be once you hit the ditch!

Come to KVUJ sometime, my mini bar is full of craft beer (for me) and Not Your Father's (for my daughter).

Have you ever watched Piperpainter's Mooney Videos ?!?! - you'll realize your Mooney is a lot sturdier than you think!!!

We go to Asheville regularly, but I always fly into Hendersonville, NC (0A7), nice little airport w/SelfServe and we usually stay at one of the nicer Bed & Breakfast in Hendersonville. Enterprise will pick you up at the airport. There is an awesome Brewery (Bus) Tour in Asheville that is a lot of fun and informative. We have done it a few times and the Restaurant walking tours are always an excellent way to sample some of the finer things in Asheville.

I have some experience with the Google Earth API - much easier to plot things like this. Go ahead and add me - airport: KVUJ - Stanly County, Albemarle, NC.

What would a $50K new Mooney require
Wildhorsesracing replied to aviatoreb's topic in General Mooney Talk
Owning a certified and an experimental aircraft I'll agree with that 100% - experimental is always less expensive. I'd like to see aircraft that are at least 30 yrs old be able to be declared experimental to take advantage of the lower costs to keep them flying. -
I'm ready to buy...
Wildhorsesracing replied to ragedracer1977's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
carusoam makes a good point, it might be worth it to buy an F without all of the bells and whistles you don't really want and add the ones that you do. -
M20 C uncommanded gear extension
Wildhorsesracing replied to Urs_Wildermuth's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I have tried to lower my gear a couple of times when I was still above 120 and realize the speed factor because it is so hard to do when I am going too fast. When you think about it, the landing gear is designed to take a direct hit with the ground at between 60 and 80 mph, so being lowered into the airstream at 120+ is a non event to it's structure. The gear doors on the other hand...
