  1. One of my favorites is Asheboro, NC - KHBI aka "Hill Billy International" - lives up to it name!
  2. I was going to look at the weather and go for a day or two. It is only a 45 min flight for me, so I can come home and sleep in my own bed.
  3. I understand that it is one of the flattest, nicest, grass strips around. I had the same concerns with my 'C and everyone tells me it's smoother than many asphalt runways around here.
  4. He is right, within an hour's flight of me there are a dozen or so airstrips that range from elegant to affordable. We are currently talking with one that allows hangars with apartments as long as the apartment is at least 1800sf, which is easy to do as a second story in a hangar. My wife and I are trying to stay in the Carolinas so we are using this website for reference (NC Airparks ) but I am sure there is probably a similar realtor's website in your area.
  5. I am flying my Mooney down to Triple Tree next week, anyone else going? http://www.tripletreeaerodrome.com/triple-tree-fly-in.php
  6. My wife and I have been looking at airparks lately since our plan is to downsize in 5 yrs or so. There is usually more flexibility in hangar size and expense in an airpark. Why build a hangar on government land when you can own it all?
  7. I didn't know how much they would hold until the incident when I ran one dry. The only markings on my wing were "100/100LL only" and there was no mention of capacity in the logs when the bladders were installed in the 80's. So running it dry was the 1st time I was able to find out what the capacity was. FWIW - I always fly with full tanks and rarely try to fly more than 3 hrs without filling back up.
  8. Been there, done that. My wife claims that's the only time she has seen my "Oh Sh*t!" face. Switched tanks, engine came back to life almost instantly, it was truly a non-event. My '62 C with bladders has 27.2 gallons per side - YMMV.
  9. I just painted stripes outside my hangar and used normal Rustoleum with a 4" roller and cheap painters tape. I used blue for one plane and white for the other. I did the same outside my last hangar and it is still there after three(3) years.
  10. LOL! Mongoose Beast from WalMart Makes a great bike to get around the airport.
  11. The Polished Mooney has to share my hangar with my latest acquisition...
  12. I found the doppelgänger for my Mooney today - a pair of 33U's...
  13. In my panel where the tube radio came out, this will fit it nicely. http://www.guardianavionics.com/ifdr-aircraft-panel-mount-ipad-mini-dock.html Has anyone installed one yet?

    N6233U exterior upgrade

Getting rid of the flaking paint and deciding what to do afterwards.

Beautiful day to shine a plane

  18. I replaced my windows a few years ago to 3/16" and didn't notice any difference in sound or vibration. I did the side windows in gray and windshield in clear, the gray just looked "dirty" all the time. I have to replace them after stripping the paint off last year so I am going back to stock thickness and clear all the way around.
  19. How does one get cracked? Can you post some pictures of the crack and where it is?
  20. LOL! It's already in the 70's here... I don't miss upstate NY one bit!
  21. Did that two years ago when it happened the 1st time, replaced the seals fixed it. Noticed it last summer again so I decided to leave the flaps "up/retracted" post flight and hasn't been an issue since. It's just a matter of fluid expansion having no where to go.
  22. FWIW - I have found that my actuator will weep in the summer if I leave my flaps in the extended position. Retract them post flight and no weepage... YMMV.
  23. Has anyone ever replaced their headliner with one that is like current automotive ones? ie. foam baked fabric glued up to the ceiling?
  24. I'll agree that the weekly flying is more to keep the corrosion off of the pilot's skills than the engine. I took my own advice yesterday and flew to an airport I had never been to before. Here in NC there is a fun "book" you can sign up for to get stamps in from every airport in the state. It's a great program to get folks flying, especially to some truly unique airports that I would've never visited if it wasn't for the book. Operation FlyNC FYI - I am an ex-"Yankee" - used to live in Potsdam, NY - one of the snowiest, coldest places in the USA. My wife would cross-country ski to work in the winter because it was less effort than shovelling the driveway, unplugging and warming up her car, etc., so I fully understand winters, but glad we moved here 30 yrs ago
