  1. From the album: Pilots N Paws

Mario is a blind mini poodle. Needed to get to Van Nuys from Sacramento.
  2. Yes. I intended to mention the OAT as a factor as well. Absolute CHT is not created equal as you stated. I usually reduce power with a combination of MP and RPM adjustments to below 65% and then it doesn't matter whether you are LOP or ROP at any altitude.
  3. Isn't it then possible to corroborate this with CHT measurements at both peak EGT and at 40 deg ROP? Looking at the CHT and ICP curves for various engines they seem to be peak at the same temp (except they have different scales). So this would be a good way to determine when to run LOP or ROP at the lower altitudes and avoiding the red box?
  4. I found that the videos taken off the wing-end mounted GoPro camera are noticeably more stable after the prop balance (I used to have these low frequency resonance oscillations at lower RPMs).
  5. Tim, thanks for your reference. I went down today to Watsonville and got the prop balanced. My initial reading was 0.56 IPS and 3 iterations later, Bruce's technician brought it down to 0.01 IPS. Very smooth flight back.
  6. I had to look that up - "paronomasia". Thanks, learnt a new word today!
  7. According to the BRS website, the chute will fully inflate 260 to 290 ft AGL. That is quite amazing.
  8. Interesting bit of news. I thought there was no pilot shortage, just salary "shortages". http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/JetBlue-s-trial-approach-Will-train-novices-to-6874608.php
  9. We have parallel runways at Livermore (aligned east-west) and during certain times of the year, we have strong north-south winds. Overshooting base to final is not an option. Going around would still imply coming close to the parallel runway but climbing to avoid conflicting traffic on final hopefully below you at that point. And then expecting a earful from the controller!
  10. On AvWeb. Now one for the Mooney!
  11. But then Chris you are paying for a GTN 650, Garmin Pilot and an Aspen subscription? Way out of CB territory My panel will probably underwhelm you in terms of "visible glass". Haha. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  12. The CB in me won't let me spend any more on major avionics! Does Flightstream 210 transfer all the approach/departure fixes into the handheld? Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk
  13. While you cannot EASILY do this, if you know what approach you are going to fly you can manually add all the fixes as waypoints in your flightplan. If your preflight weather briefing indicates that winds will favor a specific runway, and you know your approach preferences, you can pretty much know what approach you are going to fly before you leave home. Yes, I do this already . This is the poor mans version of getting the approach fixes into the graphical display. If they can get what the GTNs do such as to "load procedure", that would be a great first step until the real chart overlays can be loaded like in FF. This would also make the interface between the GTNs and Pilot even more seamless.
  14. I still have the HP iPaq and the Samsung Q1 which ran that software with lifetime subscriptions. They missed the boat badly. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  15. Yes, competition is a good thing! Next step is the approach chart overlay on the enroute charts which interestingly was done by Anywheremap when they were active (PC and large tablet era). Foreflight was first to do that for the iPad. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
  16. Oh great. Thanks.. When I saw the "iPad only" in the release notes I stopped looking! Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk
  17. Under which submenu did you find that? Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk
  18. Version 8.1.0 on iOS has the vertical flight profile. But not available on iPad mini. I have a retina display and could easily use that feature. Damn!
  19. http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/UC-Davis-pilot-flies-into-gas-plume-to-monitor-6814021.php#photo-9363961 Nice panel too!
  20. Flying in congested airspace in the SF Bay area, I am glad I got ADS-B out (GDL-88) with the display on my GTN650 as soon as I had the opportunity. I can't count how many near hits I have had, some on IFR flight plans. It's amazing how much traffic you don't see even when pointed out to by ATC. I wonder if any of these planes were equipped with ADS-B.
  21. A few years ago, I had a cylinder go out on takeoff at Nut Tree airport (uncontrolled and at dusk). I wasn't as far as you on the takeoff and was not yet airborne. A few seconds later and I would have been in the air with a very rough running engine. It would have not climbed. Fortunately, I was able to slow down and exit the runway and coast it to a tiedown spot. Congrats on saving everyone and the plane.
  22. That was my impression. With the Garmin Pilot and Pilotpak, it is close to 1AMU. Nice revenue stream!
  23. Chris, not sure if this will cover the Garmin 696 updates though. Are you talking about the panel mounted GPSs/MFDs only? I have a renewal coming up soon as well. I always use the #1 SD card for everything. Not being able to download twice on all features is a pain.
  24. Turned nothing was wrong. A&P started it without any problem. Intermittent? I don't know, will double check the connections before next time I fly.
  25. Thanks for your input N1395W. I will get to it one of these days when I can get away from work. After I get the cowling off, hopefully some quick clues.
