  1. You forgot not retracting the step for the '64 and earlier birds and leaving the oil door open or unsecured. I think most of us have done most of these.
  2. Well mine is 961 by calculation.
  3. Those are the sizes you should not have any issues. I have the FC II on my nose. I can't remember what I have on the mains.
  4. glad to see you are rescuing this fine plane. Fly it well and often once you get it where you want it and while getting it there
  5. I think filling it up with oil would put oil in some places you don't want it like fuel pump, mags etc if you had it full enough to reach the cam. I think it might start flowing out in other areas before reaching the cam. However, what about filling it with oil to 8 quarts removing the plugs squirting a little in the cylinders and then hand rotating the engine about 50 or more revolutions to get oil moving throughout the engine? I have done this on an IO360 engine and oil started flowing out the oil hoses.
  6. Which airport in Louisiana? I flew off with my left cap loose discovered it just sitting in the hole at 110 feet. Told ATC and spiraled down to the airport below me secure it properly. I was lucky it was still there. Before that occurred I found a spare one on eBay and it is in the plane. Yes I have the bladders so they are rare caps.
  7. Yes AP is real nice I like the STEC 30. GPSS will be even nicer I do not have it and when a course change is greater than about 10* I will set the DG bug for the new course switch to DG mode for the turn and then back the track mode. Not a big deal I can live with that. I just wish Avydine would have built in some GPSS into the CDI output of the 540 so it would anticipate the turn some.
  8. You have to manually follow glide slope but at least left to right you are good. It is altitude hold only no auto trim at least the way mine is installed.
  9. sounds like a Goldilocks moment,
  10. Last year at this time I could have easily done this. I was in Idaho Falls but not this year.
  11. I flew behind an IFR 300 and a Narco MK12. It can be done with no problems. Flying behind an IFD540 is much nicer but not necessary. Buy the most avionics you can afford on a good solid air frame while keeping in mind as time goes on you will wast to replace some of these items not necessarily because of need but desire.
  12. Great get some parts and keep him far far far away form your precious Mooney.
  13. also without the cowing you do not have an air filter but short run like that should not be problem.
  14. Just remember if you take them off you will need to re-rig the elevators at a minimum and you will need the travel boards. Like MK said they are not that special.
  15. Well you can make up a good package and put it on MS under aircraft for sale. You might want to become a volunteer firefighter first and have your bunker gear on and ready. Lots of good pictures and if not already done scan the log books for anyone who might be interested. At a minimum the most recent stuff and anything major in the past. After that barnstormers and trade a plane if you want to sell it yourself. Otherwise back to a broker.
  16. Bought a set at SnF to try and I like them. I wanted yellow but all he had was black at the time. I figured yellow would be easier to find. I still keep and use my Light speed Sierras they are nice too.
  17. Flying home form Indy Sunday in an area around McComb Mississippi the squelch kept opening up on a frequency for Houston Center. This was on my IFD540. No other issues so something with that freq in that area. I have had terrible interference before in certain areas on certain frequencies with other radios. Avionic guy blamed it on old ELT but I'm not so sure. this is FM (freaking magic) technology for you. Go from antenna to radios and tray connectors and make sure everyone is clean and making a good connection. My NAV 2 sometimes gets really static and a cleaning of the antenna connector on the tray helps.
  18. Must be something about the 67F models I had this happen about 2 years ago away from home. It appears that your's is on #3. Good thing it is an easy fix.
  19. I've used this type at SnF the last couple of years. Get the ones about 18" long with about 3" diameter auger about $20 each at your well stocked local hardware store. Use large screwdriver or a piece of pipe to install and remove. I guess if you are really ambitious you could always weld a nut to the top and use a portable impact wrench to install and remove faster.

    poweroff 180

sorry about the plane. I would almost want to challenge the DPE on the failure or at least discuss it with him. Yes you damaged the plane a very unfortunate thing but you did land it and after all it was a power off "emergency landing". Did you successfully do the following? The standard does not say you cannot damage the plane nor do you want to however if you met the standard he should pass you regardless. Complete the appropriate checklist. Make radio calls as appropriate. Plan and follow a flight path to the selected landing area considering altitude, wind, terrain, and obstructions. Position airplane on downwind leg, parallel to landing runway. Correctly configure the airplane. As necessary, correlate crosswind with direction of forward slip and transition to side slip for landing. Touch down within -0/+200 feet from the specified touchdown point with no side drift, minimum float, and with the airplane’s longitudinal axis aligned with and over the runway centerline.
  21. well it is clear that the left wing is trying to undercut and take down the king.
  22. Don't forget Saturday night as well.
  23. Hey does it help if you have a volunteer fireman there? I was pushing the Summit to every Mooney pilot I talked to at SnF.
  24. Hey we will be having a big Gulf coast Mooniacs meeting in September called Mooney Summit.
  25. I'm probably not saying anything new behind all the advice above. However consider the following things. Keep in mind no one here is trying to discourage you from buying a plane we just want to make sure you go in with both eyes open and fully awake. We have all sen too many planes sitting on the ramp for one reason or another (lack of funds, lack of interest, medical etc.) being neglected and we would not want to send another one to the grim reaper: If you have children the acquisition is the fun part. Raising and maintaining them gets expensive. What is the potential for your income to increase faster than the rate of inflation? Besides the calculated fixed cost, base annual inspection, insurance and hangar do you have at a minimum an additional $5k per year of discretionary funds above and beyond operational cost fuel tie down at other airports, normal living expenses and normal savings etc. Are you mechanically inclined and willing to do all the owner allowed maintenance operations as well as more under the supervision of a A&P? Hang out a the airport some get to know other pilots and most importantly get to know one or more of the local mechanics. Talk to the customers and find out how good he is. I bought my first plane and when annual was coming up just 6 months later I was in a bind to find someone. You can create spreadsheets to calculate cost I can share some of mine with you if you want but at the end of the day once you have a plane fly it, close your eyes and it only cost you the fuel to get from point a to b.
