Having experienced an open door three times, once with Gary "Fantom" Hellman (may he rest in peace) on board. He was a strong guy and even he couldn't close it, so we flew on with it open. Other than a lot of noise, it doesn't cause much fuss in terms of handling difficulties. But as exM20K stated, it could have been the luggage door.

Oh yea. My wife always complains about hitting the reel with her right shoulder, and there have been many times that I hit it while getting in and out of the plane. But the pain is worth it.

Just be current and on your toes for when that automation fails.

A few years ago my unit started smoking in mid-flight and died. When I had the unit removed and opened up, the problem was very apparent. I shipped the unit off to Mid-Continent and had the repaired unit back in my hands within ten days. It's been working great ever since.

Definitely agree, a few years ago I needed the luggage door seal replaced and the shop used the fuselage type and I was pissed because I knew intrinsically by looking at it that it would get pitted and destroyed just by light use, and I was correct. By annual time the next year, it was nearly gone from the bottom of the frame and I had my shop install the correct type, which is glued to the hatch.

About seven years ago I found myself with an extra articulating frame (a single one, not pair) and sold it for $2,400. They are probably the hottest single item for the J and K model.

One thing not mentioned, or may have been but was embedded within a reply, is that aircraft owners need to have the stomach for unforeseen, expensive repairs. Just last year, my 83 J needed the landing gear relay replaced, both tanks resealed and exhaust valves lapped. All told, the repairs came out to $23k. While this was not a "typical" year, there have been other unexpected, expensive repairs along the way. So if you don't have the ability to tolerate these unforeseen (but inevitable) situations, then I recommend that you stay away or take on partners. Other than that, aircraft ownership is a great privilege and experience. Just my 2¢

Just curious, are you a State Trooper? The reason I ask is because it's years between the time that I see truly inebriated drivers and your reply makes it sound like you encounter them all of the time. These days it's difficult to ascertain if a driver is intoxicated or replying to a text message.
