  1. many years ago, so things may have changed. but not a great experience.
  2. an Odyssey battery is FAA PMA ?
  3. Not sure what Wheelen light bulb you are i referring to but I am guessing that would be PMA'ed (like a light bulb, tire, tube , oil filter, battery, ...) for your aircraft (basic replacement). Part number but no serial number.
  4. thankfully, we are sort of immune to those on the left coast. a quick lunch or dinner with the rich donors of Silicon Valley and off they leave. No loitering in the sketchy area of the city or in oak city
  5. the G5 is very light and often replaces instruments or indicators that weight a few lbs ! 1 lb change .... redo W&B ... POH entry
  6. i had that same thought as the OP a few years back. Totally agree that checking the mags and the switch is fast, easy and a great idea. (I am actually one of those who once in a while checks mags in flight (always above or very close to an airport just like when i switch tanks) But i would not want to have in the logs a multitude of references to ADs that do not apply. Referencing an AD once and stating that it does not apply would be OK if the AD is related to my airframe or installed appliances.
  7. care to share approximate cost ? pm if prefer to keep it non public
  8. I don't think I missed your point. I am saying that the unit is yours no matter what, with Garmin making it clear upfront that to get it back, you will be paying at least $500 (more if they can repair it). Garmin has its own standards that I am not privy to (maybe a pixel missing disqualifies the unit?, I don't know) But the unit should go back to you (because it is your property) with either a green light or a red tag. What you do with that tag is up to you.
  9. on a J the 2 blades prop quickly go from providing thrust to being a speed brake
  10. I am assuming that the unit is still yours (-$500 ! thank you). Garmin can return it red tagged it and if they do, have to write down why they believe it is red tagged.
  11. I had the OECO 20082 on my 77J and I replaced it with the Zeftronics R1530B . Same metal plug as the OECO only difference is the bolts footprint (you will only have 3 bolts (vs 4 for the OECO)
  12. I highly doubt you get anywhere near 100% of your investment back the same applies to critical structural parts of the airframe that are difficult (long lead time or expensive to procure or repair)
  13. agreed they did a great job supporting the units so far and gave warning to the owners base. However, the $500 to be told that the unit is toast does not feel right . I doubt it costs that much to make that assessment
  14. i guess they either forgot to reconnect it, or the DME is INOP and did not bother removing the cables
  15. obviously, the DME antenna is in the belly (same as the transponder, CI-101 ball type antenna or KA61 blade type antenna) the coax normally runs from the antenna / belly to either side behind the side panel and runs to the avionics rack in the tail cone
  16. sounds like we need a mooney fly in to Mexico start in Brown Field or Calexico
  17. Even if the "Free drinks" included a whole barrel of high quality tequila, that would still be expensive ! you don't need a handler (unless it is SJD airport)
  18. hope with time, you will change your mind and go again. The flying south of the border to Baja is truly amazing and even more so if on top of that it helps the community it does involve a lot of paperwork and constraints. the Mexican restaurant on the field in Calexico is worth the stop after clearing customs
  19. Calexico ? what happened ? brought back too many avocados ? i crossed in Calexico a few times and never had any issues as they very much cater to GA
  20. start by removing the seats (front and back) then hat rack it will start to make sense most difficult is the headliners
  21. part 0. is to remove the cowling it is not complicated but requires a few tools (right wrench size , torque wrench, tool to open the filter ) and parts (safety wire , grease for the filter gasket although you can also use the oil to grease it, oil analysis kit if you can , plenty of rags !!) and it can get messy If you can, change the oil with the engine warm and let it drain overnight if your plane is in a hangar (it also helps reduce the mess). Puncturing the filter can also helps reduce the mess best to have the help of someone who has done it before to get the basics
  22. any pictures of the Electroair system installed ? the space between the firewall and the accessory panel is already pretty busy
  23. I believe the only electric options you have would be an Aspen (up to $10k to get the config you need) or the GI-275 ADHARS with A/P and thats not much cheaper all these do a lot more than the basic attitude output for the A/P you are looking for . I am hoping the AV-30C or the RC-Allen will eventually get A/P outputs
  24. what tool are you looking for ?
  25. thanks for the detailed answered on the different TSOs . I am sure all these new products are great quality. But as you rightly point out , this about see and avoid at night and more precisely for other pilots/aircrafts to see me and avoid me. I wonder how all these LEDs can play well together (let's call it installation STC compatibility) based on the different wing tips (I still have the square tip)
