  1. Anyone flying to the Reno Air Race at Stead ? what is the best way to get / fly there ?
  2. flew over 88NV or Black Rock City aka Burningman Very nice view from 10,000 feet but i did not have the guts to land. Maybe another year. Then to Carson city for a early dinner.
  3. I can't really see the fuel leak. (on the gear door maybe ???) Anyway, price looks low considering even considering the thin market for an N registered aircraft in France. very basic aircraft though without a basic A/P. Most 77 J model, I believe, were equipped with a Century IIB
  4. The shop in Gnoss filed did A/P work on a friends Cessna and he was happy with it. Easy drive from the bay area since that's a consideration
  5. Thanks. I will look next time the dash is off
  6. I (think) I know where most items are but I have trouble seeing where the voltage regulator is in an early J model Anyone has an idea where it is located ?
  7. how much would the installation cost ? very little space left inside a J cowling. how can you add a TN !!!
  8. The bolt type plug that covers the oil screen has 2 wires coming out of it. Anyone knows what those are ? Oil temperature sensors maybe ? The screen is indeed difficult to see and a pain in the neck to reach .
  9. Battery (rechargeable) life of the ICOM 20 is very poor and makes the unit unreliable. I have not tested it using non-rechargeable batteries. Unit looks good however
  10. A slightly different question ... I wonder what parts a Mooney owner must keep in stock
  11. A suggestion to detect where the leak is coming from: Remove cowlings and clean the engine as well as you can under the supervision of your A/P. run the engine a little bit but do not fly it ... taxi to the other side of the field to get gas or whatever. open the cowling again and look ...
  12. for single engine / 4-seaters, it will very rarely makes sense to own vs. renting. what counts is how much pleasure an aircraft ownership brings you.
  13. what do you mean by cam eating ?
  14. Arnav 5000 is still installed and staying off inop. On the same panel I had just removed a KR-85 just a few months prior the fed turning off Loran. All of a sudden, 4.5 in free ! Great for an MFD, but unfortunately, the KT-76 is in the middle. So 2 in above it and 2.5 below. Waiting to see what happens with ads-b.
  15. 1qt every 2 hours is a lot considering you can conceptually fly a J with standard fuel tank close to 6 hours I had at some point a lot of oil (yellow) on the gear doors. I suggest you ask your mechanic to check the 4 small rubber tubes that are under the crankcase. These 4 tubes can become a bit loose. They are kept with clamps and need to be tightened (8 clamps, 2 for each rubber tube). I don't have a picture and my mechanical knowledge is limited. May be someone on here will chime in to describe what those are. They are a pain to reach but easy to locate maybe with a flashlight ! After tightening the clamps, I have a lot less oil on the gear well. Hope this helps.
  16. I have a 430 and a KX-155 (but no experience with the SL30) I like the robustness of the KX-155. I once left the plane on a ramp where the temperature was very high and a beating sun (south TX !) The 430 went blank at start. The KX-155 worked. (the 430 came back after take off). Only issue with KX-155 is the orange lenses tend to age with the film peeling. You can get replacement faceplate at Chief that will make the unit look like new. expensive for a simple plastic piece but will make the unit look new !!
  17. I believe (but I am not certain) a W/B entry must be made in the POH by an A/P each time there is 1 lbs or more added or removed
  18. direct replacement is the way to go !!!!! whenever you can whenever there is rewiring needed, it always cost more than it should, not counting the downtime, logistics to get to the shop and the collateral damage !!!
  19. concur with comment above .... $5 every 3 years is a small fee to pay to keep the sky safe and the airplane directory up to date. I worry about the big ticket items down the road : ADS-B out (how much $$$ to install and keep current ??? every 2 years ?)+ transponder requirement ( ~ $200 every 2 years). Can someone tell me for what in return ?
  20. I am not as fortunate and the 2000 figure is approaching rather fast (I am at around 1800). I take that back, I really should say that I am fortunate to get to fly !! Anyway, on the plus side, my engine has been running without and problem and the compressions and oil analysis / consumptions are still good. maybe a top O/H till the dust settles and we see a path forward.
  21. and you did not mention winter and summer gasoline grades !!! Jet A is one of the very few universal fuels (probably the only 1) and despite some airline testing bio versions of it (for their image), it is here to stay
  22. Totally agree. any new special fuel will have us in a corner and won't be cheaper.
  23. very cumbersome indeed. I believe (but I am not sure) that a thorough way would be to search the FAA web site for: all M20J Ads and all the ADs corresponding to all the form 337s associated with your S/N If that was the case, you would think the FAA could provide a way to give all the ADs associated with a S/N But this is aviation, so nothing can be easy or inexpensive.
  24. speed brakes ...
  25. a paint job ?
