  1. The bottom of my plane gets cleaned once a year at annual whether it needs it or not! In between annual?? Fahgedaboutit!! Just the way I am. There are better things in life than scrubbing that crap off!
  2. Looks pretty normal. You might be able to suck your left nose gear door up a little, but I doubt it would give you any noticeable speed increase. Also your right main gear seems to hang a little lower than the left. You might be able to get it even with the left, but it will be a lot of fiddling around with adjustments to do it. Overall, looks good.
  3. To the OP- I have about 150 hours in two O-470 powered 182s. Never liked them because they are air-trucks, not airplanes. They do one thing really well, haul a respectable load off a short runway and climb pretty good. I only flew them because they were available all the time in the club I used to rent from and faster than the Warriors and Skyhawks. No way they would cruise at 145kts. I think the upgraded modern ones can do that though. The things you need to ask yourself are, will there be any more children and how much stuff does your wife and child need to travel with. The number one thing that makes Mooney owners switch to another brand is the need for more space and more useful load. I have never seen a Mooney owner switch to a 182. They usually go either to a twin engine plane, or the Beechcraft Bonanza. If you feel you need the space, I would skip shopping the 182 and look at Bonanzas unless you plan to operate out of short strips. If you think you can pack light and you are done with expanding your family, the M20J is a great choice. You will save money operating it over a Bonanza and it will be much faster than the 182. Best to have your wife check out a Mooney first before you go to far.
  4. He already has an RV-4, or 8. I can't remember which. He's not quitting flying, just long cross countries I guess. I can see how two airplanes could drive you nuts.
  5. Oh, right. Duh! Makes sense now, thanks. I have thought about adding this feature to my plane, but then I remind myself of how often I have a dead battery. Pretty much never.
  6. I suppose if you install this external plug, the access cover is then tethered to the airplane and you would have to unbolt the cables to get it completely out of the way? Are the cables typically pretty long to allow the cover to be pushed aside, or short so you have unbolt if you want to do any work in there?
  7. I missed it completely. I guess I never read the advertising. I use Tempest filters and I cut and inspect them myself. Where is this magnet?? I'm assuming down by the "bolt head" where you put your wrench?
  8. Got it all figured out huh? Should be an easy snap to make millions with your simple get help plan.
  9. You and me both. It is a sad and tragic disease.
  10. Yep. Pretty much how I was taught and how I plan. I think that those that get in trouble with the "impossible" turn do so because they panic and start the turn before they have nosed over and re-trimmed for best glide while going forward. I have never been in that situation with dead motor on departure and so I can't really cast judgment on those that have tried and failed. The urge to turn back as soon as possible must be very strong. I just hope that if it happens to me someday, that I have my wits collected enough to prepare the plane for the turn first, rather than just jerking it over.
  11. I don't get it. The implication here is the one should never try to return to the airport in the event of an engine out because it is crazy. Is that so? The altitude that this Cessna was at when he started his turn is not given, so I don't know how to judge this decision, but given enough altitude, I see no problem with returning to the airport.
  12. I like to fly my Mooney up to about 17,000 ft, then point the nose down at the earth and watch the airspeed and groundspeed climb... then pretend I have an Acclaim...
  13. I think it's kind of funny. Here you have a pair of Slicks that have gone 1700 hours without anything done to them, they are working fine, so don't let the internet talk you into junking them. I have Slicks too. I read all this same stuff and sent mine out just past 500 hours for IRAN to Aircraft Magneto Service and you know what? They were fine. They replaced almost nothing. They worked good before and they work good now. According to the internet they should have been melted down, ground down pieces of junk requiring thousands of dollars to fix, but that just wasn't the case. Slicks are smaller (really nice if you work on your own plane) and lighter. Bendix provide a hotter spark. If your mags really are junk, maybe consider new Bendix, but otherwise IRAN them like I did. I think you'll find it isn't all that bad and they'll continue to work fine.
  14. I don't get it at all. I went to the Chive site and it's nothing but goofy stuff for sale. How is this site "cult"? There seems to be no real content, just kitschy stuff for sale. I guess it's supposed to be Bill Murray, but it's a terrible likeness. I seriously thought it was David Niven for the longest time. Also, why the "fucking" ?? Oh well, that's America.
  15. Ummm... pretty sure it's not. In person the sticker really looks nothing like Bill Murray. At least not like Bill Murray the comedian/actor.
  16. I never thought about it before, but your airplane is kind of like the Twin Comanche but without the redundancy.
  17. Wow!! That bug does loops! That is impressive!!
  18. Not a license plate question, but who the hell is that guy in the sticker on your back window?? I see those around and I really have no idea and I've been wondering for a while now. I asked a kid who had one on her car and she didn't know who it was either, she just thought he looked cool. Kind of like the Che Guevara fad awhile back.
  19. Understood. Maybe you can write it off as a business expense?
  20. You didn't say what kind of engineer you were, but if you're good with tools, have you considered taking on the job yourself as project? The upside is you would save most of that $13,000 for yourself. The down side is your plane will likely be down for months as you would have to do this work in your free time and you have never done it before.
  21. The only thing I will add as a bright spot is, if you have to undergo a repair like this, having D-Max doing the logbook entry looks really good at resale time. It does suck though that now his plane is basically held hostage by the FAA. Like I said in the other thread, $13,000 is likely about what it will cost at any MSC in the country. He might be able to find some other mechanic to take it on for less money, but buyer beware in that case. Do your due diligence for sure.
  22. How can two different vehicles have the same plate??
  23. I wonder how many pilots using this thing abandon their six packs and CDIs and just fly the approach with the iPad running SV? I bet way more than the folks that make the SV would be comfortable with.
  24. I'm assuming that it's one of bottom tubes as they are most likely to corrode. In this case, pulling skins off the outside won't get you access. Likely he is correct, the wing has to be dropped. However, pictures are always nice.
  25. That's funny. Very cleverly got by the censors. I need a flip down version of that. I don't like calling everyone in front of me an asshole, just the ones that really are.
