Fortunately, those are not the only choices. Garmin certainly is the main avionics source. IF you want all Garmin panel and don't mind paying for it, they are a great choice.

That would be an opinion of what you call stable.

No such thing as an Aspen repair shop, talk to your dealer for recommendations. Only one way to do the upgrade. Again talk to your avionics shop. The dealer makes the reservation and collects the money. Aspen does the work.

try ADS-B + or GDL-88 or Capstone Trfc+Wx

Help on Bravo EDM-900 or EI MVP-50P
Cruiser replied to jgarrison's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
they are soldered on the display board. Rgpilot described the process ^^^^. If all are out, someone changed them before and used 28v bulbs? Or there may be other problems. You cannot test the bulbs in the circuit, they must be removed to know if they are blown. -
Help on Bravo EDM-900 or EI MVP-50P
Cruiser replied to jgarrison's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
On the Ovation gauges there are two sets of lightbulbs . Night lights are tied into the dimmer circuit and are 28v bulbs Day time lights are driven from the modules and are 5v bulbs. -
ADS-B OUT 1090 and/or 978 some rules apply as stated above ^^ ADS-B IN 1090 air to air = TRAFFIC only 978 air to air traffic + weather + ADSB-R which is the previous two + repeated 1090 traffic. So a 1090 only IN is for TRAFFIC only a 978 IN is the only source of weather data. a 978 will also receive other 978 TRAFFIC but NOT 1090 TRAFFIC a 978 IN will also receive a ground station ADSB-R which provides all of the above.^^

it could be volume.

I'm off for the dreaded 44709 check ride tomorrow!
Cruiser replied to RocketAviator's topic in General Mooney Talk
There is probably much, much more to the story but it does seem extraordinary that the FSDO would require a 709 ride. Usually these are for demonstration of ability. i.e. cross wind landings, slow flight, tracking course etc.- 131 replies

Finally! I'm getting the GFC 500 installed next week
Cruiser replied to donkaye's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I take it the GFC 500 is not subject to the new CANBUS wiring requirements. -
*Note, FF Multiplier is based on 1.1604 * Comp. Ratio + 5.030 *Note Note, This formula is a best fit line calculation based on known values of: Comp Ratio FF Multiplier 8.5 14.9 7.5 13.7 7.3 13.53 Courtesy EGTrends Inc. 2004 www.EGTrends.com BSFC = Fuel Flow (PPH) ÷ Horsepower or BSFC = 5.92 x Fuel Flow (GPH) ÷ Horsepower (the 5.92 just converts PPH to GPH, note: standard tempurature 100LL weights 6.02#/gal) so to get HP from the formula you have HP = 5.92 x Fuel Flow / BSFC the BSFC will change with engine design. Normally aspirated engines typically have lower BSFC then the turbocharged engines mainly due to the increased safety margins for detonation on TC'd engines. The Lycoming IO360 has an 8.7:1 compression ratio and the BSFC is around .39 If you divide 5.92/.39 you get 15.17 or the 15.13 multiplier x FF ( the slight difference is from rounding error or approximation from the best fit formula) A lower compression engine will have a slightly higher BSFC thus the multiplier will be lower. Typically a 7.5:1 CR engine uses 13.73 multiplier of a BSFC of around .43 and so forth.

CB avionics pirep - should one use dual ipads in flight?
Cruiser replied to DXB's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Just remember that your two iPads have several common points of failure. If your flightsteam fails both iPads fail if your stratus fails, both iPads fail if Forefight craps out you have nothing. -

The 3100 is all digital A/P and only works with an EFD like the Avidyne Entegra or Aspen PFD.

All the servos are the same. The ones in the plane will work. You need three: Roll (in the wing) pitch and trim in the tail cone. All the wires connecting the Alt Hold module in the tail cone will need to be routed or replaced to the System 55x computer in the panel.
-
the servos all are the same. They do not get replaced. you replace the turn coordinator/auto pilot (s-tec 30) with a S-tec turn coordinator and the S-tec 55x computer rewire the Nav inputs and other controls to the new 55x and done. S-tec System 55x is a great A/P it provides FULL coupled approach functions. and has Alt pre-select and FD also

Interesting that the airport does not have the information. How do the bills get paid?
-
you are adding a duplicate of the PFD. All the same connections are required on the MFD as on the PFD for the reversion.
-
Aspen is claiming 10 day turn around for upgrades. You are contacted with a date to send the unit(s) in and they will return in 10 days.

Who makes the decisions at the FAA regarding ADSB???
Cruiser replied to Culver LFA's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
ADS-B In weather in the cockpit FIS-B has allowed me to make/continue flights I would have cancelled in the past. Fight and resist if you want but the increased functionality for safety and awareness is worth it for me regardless of what benefit ATC/FAA realize. -
need some clarification. By CDI you mean the HSI display on the Aspen?
-
the MAX is Aspens move to the future. As more features are released (if any) they will most certainly require the MAX. You can stick with the current but you will suffer a cost penalty at sale (if you sell) so why not enjoy the benefits now?

Planes with Nav/Coms can keep the old radios and upgrade to GPS WAAS , and round it out nicely with a G3X panel. Makes perfect sense.
