IMHO install an engine monitor, (used works just as good as new) cht, egt for each cyl, oil temp... FF is a nice add if you can afford it... Read up on TBO and beyond @ Mikes, savy aviation site.... another perspective.....

Questions about M20F and Mooney's in general
asaxet replied to nathan lively's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I bought my first single ownership bird a year ago.... 66 m20e.... after my first annual... I very happy with the manual gear, hyd flaps and over all simplicity of the Mooney.... 500 hrs this year. So one year in... short body vs long was a consideration at purchase... no issue... Fuel injection vs carb... still glad it’s FI. 200 vs 180hp , got 200. want more... happy but mo is better. No auto pilot... due to $$$ and down time, ended up with an Accutrac... its heaven after 8 months of IFR single pilot... No engine monitor.... added one, improved range... an safer operations all around. Fixes 1st year... Two mag rebuilds... Attitude gyro failed... replaced with a G5 interfaced to existing 430W... all three tires other additions, Added Stratus adsb in... and now prefer IFR with two iPads.... Next is to figure out what 2020 adsb out solution works for me.... and come up with cash for a flight stream 210.... Have fun looking.... then zero in on what you want/need and get serious about finding it.... perfect is hard to find... darn close can be good place to start... Just my expirence FWIW -
True airspeed not what book says
asaxet replied to Supercop0184's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Didnt see you mention if you have a engine monitor... For my E.... as purchased jpI 450 fuel flow indicator and stock single cyl cht and egt. Never able to get very close to any poh numbers... Installed a new 4 cyl cht, egt, ff monitor and amazed how much better the range is now that better monitoring of what is going on with the engine is posible... and how much error there was with the originals.... unfortunatly it wont help your speed much... but definitely better range now... (and I haven’t gone gami yet.).. guessing it would be the same for a carb equipped bird... FWIW -
Looks like it will work on my E (based on comments above) .. I’m interested... at price point listed previous

M20E Airspeed Limitations Before and After 1969
asaxet replied to M20 Ogler's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Manual gear.... Hyd flaps... crushing the Yellow.... keep it simple... affordable... and exciting .... LOL -
Lots of good advice above... My experience with the same issue on my bird.... Installed mid/low cost replacement LED bulbs in the existing wing sockets... no more trips... I did have an issue with the original single wire tail lite frying the led bulb... eventually added a grounding wire socket (grounded to rudder ) it did have a larger dome to accept the LED... and now have a continuous aft tail lite with a flasher ring.... perhaps a little added safety.... All purchased at Aircraft spruce... my bird is averaging 10 hours a week currently... this time of year a lot of lites on time.... (too many hours spent at the place paying for it all) again Just my experience...

Any LOP/ROP Masters in the MD/DE/PA Area??
asaxet replied to mschmuff's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I am flying a 66e in to KDAL almost daily..... same -A1A and max fuel fuel burn for me is 18.... I’m guessing you need to sort out that sensor... was running a JPI 450... recent tally replaced with a cgr-30p... and sorting it out... about 4 days flying after install. 50 miles... running 25/25 @4000 ft I can lean to 9.5gph most days... maybe do the Gami gig next... -
Ill take one 531, both if your not willing to separate... 253 347 9 two two 3 ... call or text... let me know what owe... Thanks
-
My E is was a bear to start hot... or after just sitting the Texas summer sun all day... until i found and use the Dave Mcgee Hots Starts M20e... process.. google it... I always set throttle to 1000 rpm now on shut down.....
-
Sweet... good to know... I was considering doing the same... Thanks....
-

-
I am installing a EI engine monitor... can someone point me to the area where the Factory Electrical Shunt is installed.... Thanks
-
I didnt know the rpms would go that low... LOL maybe I'm stuck on the MAPA article that suggests any thing other than 25/25 is a waste of Mooney, money and/or Time.. Good info to know... Thanks... i'll have to try it out on mine... but back to the thread... if i put more than 5 qts in the sump... in short order ends up on the belly of my bird...
-
My A1A has its best burn rate if kept between 4 and 5 qts...
-
64 or 65... That is the question
asaxet replied to MIR2018's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I have s/n 895, registration shows 65.... mooney s/n data shows 66..... as far as i can tell after a yr of flying it.... no body cares... and i am starting to wonder if I do... ??? -
ignition switch or solinoid or shower of sparks??
asaxet replied to TheTurtle's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
I found David's process very productive with my E... search google for "Hot Starts M20E interview with David McGee" Im usually running in 1 or 2 start attempts of 15secs of starter engagement... Just get in the habit of 1000 rpm shut downs... that throttle position works well for myh cold starts too... -
Keep your speed up, if able.
asaxet replied to ragedracer1977's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
an ATC request to keep it moving a few weeks ago into KDAL.... Speed brakes came in handy... fun day... -
Mine has one also.... was wondering.... now Im not... Thx..
