Governor Stop Screw - Safety Wire?
0TreeLemur replied to Skates97's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Richard, thanks for the info. Too bad it isn't some weird metric size... This means that on my a/c the limit lever the hole is stripped so that a No. 8 screw slips in/out. I spoke with my A&P who said he will tap it so a #10x32 fits. -
M20C Panel Redo: EGT rotary switch too BIG.
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
When we calibrated the fuel tanks, I emptied the L tank in flight, then drained about 7 gallons from the right tank after landing by removing the sampling port. Now said sampling port is leaking as evidenced by blue staining around its perimeter about 1/2 inch. I didn't want to over tighten it. Does anyone know the correct torque for that? The maintenance manual doesn't seem to include that fact. -Thx. -

I think it is a number 8x32 but mine is stripped. Anyone else seen that? -
Governor Stop Screw - Safety Wire?

What size screw is that? The one on my O360 needs replacing. Trail and error through my A&P’s used screw collection turns up 0.16” (too large) and 0.12” (too small). I need (just right). Thx. Follow up- I think it is a no. 8 screw but stripped out. Anyone had that problem? -
As of 4/18/18, I have a Garwin 6-pack cluster for sale on eBay, with bad oil temperature gauge, item number: 123078534718 Presently valued at $5.50+shipping.

I found the M20 interior label/placard set by a company called Aerographics to be pretty complete. I'm going to order a set when I get my panel redo finished.

M20C Panel Redo: EGT rotary switch too BIG.

J.P.I. EDM900 Installed and tested. Works great! It sure makes leaning the engine a snap. Seeing everything in one place in vivid color is awesome. The Lycoming manual says to run the O360 at peak EGT. I can't bring myself to do it, remembering stories about burned exhaust valves. Kind of like being told "Go ahead- run with scissors." or "Go swimming right after you eat a big meal." 75F rich of peak is what I was taught, which gives about 10.8 gph at 5500-6500 ft and 24 sq. Should I run at peak? (note I forgot to hit "Refill? <yes>") -
I just learned that Dynon has discontinued the D-2. Weird. I think it is a very useful and smart backup with a lot of useful info shown. Any ideas why they might have discontinued it?

Hi MS-ers, I'm 3/4 finished with panel upgrade of our 1967C. Installed JPI EDM900, which produced a bumper crop of unneeded instrumentation. I want to offer these items here on MS before listing them on ebay. 1. Tach, stamped from the 1980's, built by Superior Labs, Inc., Hot Sprgs, AR. for Cessna. Working when removed. Agreed with new EDM900 tach, hour meter says 1018.0 hours. No logo on face plate. No cable. 2. Original six-gauge Garwin instrument cluster in 2 rows, 3 cols layout, with amphenol connector. All gauges working when removed except oil temperature. ***SOLD*** 3. Combined Garwin MP/FP gauge, overhauled Dec., 11, 2017. Mooney logo on face plate. 4. Radair single EGT indicator- worked upon removal. ***SOLD*** 5. EI VA-1A certified VA meter with wiring harness and shunt. Purchased last fall and installed. Made redundant by EDM900. Working when removed. ***SOLD*** 6. EI Oil Temp/Press gauge. with press. xducer/temp. sens. and wiring harness. Working when removed. ***SOLD*** 7. Dynon D-2 pocket panel with external GPS antenna, accessory power plug in and wall adapter. Top few lines horizontal of the display are always white but these don't cover up vital information. Works otherwise. With pinch mount for installation in empty 3-1/8" instrument hole. This thing is cool. I wish I had a spot for it, but I don't. ***SOLD*** 8. Garmin 396 aviation GPS with external antenna, accessory power plug, antenna for Sirius XM weather data, software updated November, 2017. With mounting bracket. Working. Tons of cool features. ***SOLD*** 9. Original carb. temp. gauge with amphenol connector, made by Aicrcraft Instrument and Dev. Inc. Inop when removed. Don't know if gauge is bad or sensor. If you are interested, please send PM. I can send photos of what interests you. -Fred

carusoam, your wisdom continues to amaze, astound, and inspire. Having just completed the panel redo and EDM900 install, the fuel smell in my C on the ground is really starting to annoy me. It is present even when the tanks are below the level where they weep, especially on the pilot's side. I don't notice any blue carpet. Is there some document, previous thread, or web page explaining how to remove the interior panels without destroying them? How does one gain access to the fuel pump/gascolator? I have manuals but have not begun to study the issue. Your response to this thread prompted me to ask. -Thx.

I have one from my C that was just pulled to create space for an engine monitor. It was working great.

Below is from pg. 5 of the 1967 M20C POH. It pretty clearly describes how the Ammeter is useful for diagnosing problems with the electrical system. I'd say that makes it primary, wouldn't you? -

0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I dug into this a bit more. There is conflicting information, because I did read someplace that the EDM V/A is certified primary. But, looking at the JPI-EDM900 Installation Manual, p. 5, I see that Volts and Amps are _not_ primary. The Ammeter is the only one required according to the POH for my a/c. Does anyone know the "authoritative source" to resolve this question? -

I don't know where I read that the 900 wasn't primary for V & A, but looking at the JPI page again, I think you are right. Thx. -
SiriusXM Radar and Lightning Twice as Fast
0TreeLemur replied to Txbyker's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
AFAIK, the WSR-88D scan rate is still about 14-deg/s, requiring 27sec to do a 360-degree scan. During weather, they do 14 of these scans. The total time to do a volume scan is approx. 6 minutes. Note that 14-deg/sec is really fast. Increasing it is infeasible for lots of reasons. Sirius is either doing some trickery or repeating the same image. I don't work for NOAA but I work with a bunch of people that do. -

0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
That's the way I'm leaning if it just a few extra hours. Given that the big bundle that is tucked in between the firewall and vacuum regulator is probably all additional wiring since new, I'm concerned that it might be more than just a few hours. -
What really matters is the relative position of the little airplane wings and the center of the AH. The outer ring could be painted black an not affect the pitch reading of the instrument. Proof of the arbitrary nature of the position of the the little airplane and the moving part of the AH is the fact that the pilot has great freedom to adjust the position depending on pilot height, angle of attack required to maintain level flight, etc. The outer ring markings are necessary for determining roll angle, but the effect of this apparent parallax error in pitch will be slight, something like the cosine of the pitch error (0.99 at 5 degr.).

M20C Panel Redo: EGT rotary switch too BIG.
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
Thanks. I've contacted them. We put the ~13-degree factory bend in the panel, and 3-D printed an angled spacer to allow placement of the DG below the AH with it clearing the control column. -
While re-installing instruments after recent panel upgrade, I decided to have my A&P remove the TrafficWatch because (1) it is made redundant by our Stratux ADS-B receiver and (2) never seemed to be very informative. We noticed how much wire there is that has been bundled up over the years associated with long-ago removed electronics. Looking through the manuals, the a/c has contained three generations of electronics. Narco radios? Gone. ADF? Gone. Loran C? Gone. It used to have a LOT of stuff that is gone, but the legacy wiring mostly remains. I wonder what the original wiring harness looked like? Has anyone ever stripped their A/C wiring behind the panel down to anything like the original harness? I'm in the market for a Garmin 430W then the KLN89b goes away. Should I have my instrument guru pursue removal of legacy abandoned wire when we do that install? My a/c has a huge bundle of wire jammed behind the vacuum regulator and firewall that I suspect has mostly or perhaps entirely added since new...

Mine is really dim even with the iris fully open.
