M20C Panel Redo: EGT rotary switch too BIG.
0TreeLemur replied to 0TreeLemur's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
I'm going to partially answer my own question. I just discovered the answer on LASAR's www site- the CCA2800 is used only for Monroy long range tanks. Normal applications should use the SA53S. Still need o-ring dims or p/n for the SA53S. -
M20C Panel Redo: EGT rotary switch too BIG.

We removed the weeping drain valve in my '67 M20C and replaced it with the Curtis CCA-2800. It looks dissimilar to what was removed. After doing some research it seems that a McFarlane p/n SA53S was installed. Comparing the photos of the two, it seems that the SA53S drains liquid that passes the threads, while the CCA-2800 will drain from higher up in the tank, perhaps leaving some water sitting in the bottom of the tank. The o-ring on the SA53S valve I removed is pretty smashed, that I think explains why it was weeping. The parts manual does not give the details of this valve, but since the SA53S was in there, it should probably go back in. Anybody know the o-ring dimensions or P/N? -Thanks. -

Hi Marauder, no problem- I'm a contractor working for NOAA, not in Aviation Weather, so I don't speak for them. It takes between 4 and 6 minutes for a radar to collect a complete programmed set of scans. Each radar in the country operates on its own schedule. They aren't synchronized because there are too many moving parts for that, and changing weather conditions necessitate changes in scanning pattern. If a radar near you completes its scanning program just after the FIS-B update is broadcast to your a/c, then you get to wait until the next FIS-B update for that info. That creates an additional delay on top of image compositing, the internet, etc. I don't know how they assign that age number. The maximum age one would expect would be about 8-12 minutes. I've heard that SiriusXM is making the transmission more often to minimize the amount of time that radar data spend in the hopper awaiting transmission. I guess they have the bandwidth to do that because they can transmit all those different channels of music ;-) -Fred -

I'm going to see if I can make do with ADS-B radar observation. One point made by several more experience pilots that I've discussed this with is that in a M20C, one should seek to avoid being in situations where ADS-B is insufficient from a risk management standpoint. So, I have decided to take myself out of the market for a Stormscope at this time. If at some point in the future I feel that ADS-B is insufficient, I'll revisit. -
That's funny @Hank . I can see how the film canister w/heavy rubber band would work, if you can find one today. In lieu of that, I suggest an old 4 MP digital camera held on with a tie down strap as a modern equivalent. I love the PC system. When I first heard about it, I thought 'big deal'. Now that I've done a few long trips, not having to worry about keeping the wings level, especially in turbulence, is such a relief. Last week I flew 9 hours, most of it in rough air. I had my seat slid back about mid-way with my right hand near the trim wheel and toes on the rudders just to provide a little nudge on the heading. The PC system is a thing of wonder.

While flying back from FFA last week northeast of ATL. Took a/c to avionics shop in Mississippi yesterday to get GNS430W and Appareo xpdr installed. I'll post photos after that is done in a couple of weeks. Note empty holes for G106A CDI and Accu-Trak II. -
I can't imagine a leak case that would cause it to consistently wanting to roll right. That sounds like a bad vacuum valve on the gyro to me. When I replaced the TC after installing a new panel in February, my son and I accidentally hooked up the vacuum lines backward. Two engineers got it wrong! I blame the fact that the manual uses vague and inconsistent notation, and the valve ports on back of my TC are not clearly marked. For some reason the Red/Green notation becomes Left/Right. Anyway, the improper connection was obvious when taxiing. The PC system turned the yoke into the direction of turn, when it should have turned it away from the direction of turn. That is how bad a misrigged system can get. BTW we did fix it before the first flight.

Yes, thanks everyone. @Marauder it seems that the WX-500 is really versatile. Nice pictures. -
The previous owner of my a/c discovered that replacing the o-ring on the disconnect button fixed his PC system. Doesn't sound like yours will be so easy. In February we re-arranged the instruments from shotgun to six-pack configuration and got a real good look at how it is plumbed. Like you, any folks have torn rubber membranes on their vacuum servos. Brittain was having a clearance sale on those a few months ago. You can search and get contact info here by searching MS. I can speculate on several ways to test your gyro that would involve vacuum pump, some vacuum gauges and unbolting your gyro so you can manually tilt it. If the valve body is functioning, and you can get replacement rubber membranes, and you can replumb the disconnect, you should be able to get it working again. It really is quite simple. The drawing above posted by @Igor_U does a great job of showing it. Good luck

Hi MS-ers, The new "Gulf Coast Mooniacs" club seeks members! The purpose of the club as envisioned is serve as a forum for regional news and announcements, and perhaps help promote local/regional fly-ins. I'm thinking Mooney's parked near palm trees in the winter. The club is open to all who want to participate. -Fred

@BigD I have one of the gyro's for the pre-67 that goes in the tail. I'm not sure if it works, but I'd let you try it. I would also be interested in buying a working TC100 from some MS-er as a spare. Mine seems fine for now. But, with the sad demise of Brittain, having a spare wouldn't hurt because I really like the PC system in my a/c. -Fred

In fact, selling show steers is how I paid for my PPL! FFA led to my first flight. -

TAS=150 kt at 70% power and 10 gph. Not too shabby for a four cylinder! -

I did that back in high school. They should have called the first flight airport KFAA. -
I write to provide a Pirep on our recent trip. My co-pilot and I flew Saturday from Tuscaloosa (TCL) to the First Flight Airport (FFA) to pay homage to the Wright Brothers where it all began. Had 15 kt tailwind component with one forced bladder stop and we decided to add some fuel. Spent Saturday night with friends in Raleigh. Sunday returned non-stop from Raleigh to Tuscaloosa, ending the flight at 8500' over BHM with 18 kt tail wind. The Park Service is remodeling the Wright Bros. memorial visitor center, so the facility is not complete. In the meanwhile, they are running the gift shop out of a FEMA trailer. I was disappointed to see very tall power lines at the departure end of 03, the same direction essentially that the Wrights made their first flights. Screws up what should be an unobstructed view upon departure. We flew just outside the class bravo of both ATL and CLT. Having ads-b in from Stratux was good- we most often were looking for traffic before being told about it. Makes it fun to play "where's the traffic". I'm looking forward to getting ads-b out installed in our a/c so we can see more traffic. But, the AOPA built a pilot's lounge near the ramp, where you can go in to plan flights, relax, or stamp your logbook with a FFA stamp. It was a glorious trip, taking about 9 h. -Fred

I've not gotten to digging for the source of my smelly "Mooney sweat". Been too busy flying. When it is moving through the air, the fuel smell goes away. What did you do exactly?

Thanks for writing. Where was the remote processor installed in your M20? Was it functioning well when removed? I might be interested... -
Does anyone have a good working Stormscope or Strike Finder they don't need any more? I'm seeing several on eBay but would rather buy from somebody I can trust here in MS. -Fred

Just learned that Gulf Coast Mooniacs IS NOW APPROVED Members Wanted! @Rookie @Hank @RLCarter I see a fly-in in the not too distant future to kick things off?
-
That's why we fly fast airplanes....

Hi @Rookie. The Gulf Coast Mooniacs club appears on the clubs tab, but when I click on it the message is: This club has not been approved yet Until a moderator approves this club, only you can see it. I'll let you know when it is approved. -Fred

@Rookie, I just proposed "Gulf Coast Mooniacs", a club for Mooniacs in states on the gulf coast and their neighbors. This definition could change. Need @Hank to invite other members, cause I'm a nOOb.

I'm +1. We need a fly in with Palm Trees- in the winter. Hell yeah.
