  1. Amen. Please post PDFs in the future. Office documents are too prone to malware.
  2. Similar issues. In summer it isn't as bad, but in winter she has become nearly impossible to start. Replaced the mags, SoS, wiring, etc. Now looking at the carb. It is likely the boost in the carb that is fouled. It is critical for starting and fast throttle advancement. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  3. Thanks for the comments, everyone. Now begins a long search for a partner with a similar mission and then an airplane. In the meantime, I love our M20C.
  4. What year (if at all) did Piper, Beechcraft, and Cessna start anti corrosion treatment as standard from the factory? Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  5. Ok, I'm spoiled after flying a Mooney, but aside from leaving the new kid with the grandparents, we'll need a 6 seater. My main concern with other brands of aircraft is corrosion. So, what 6 seater with FIKI, low corrosion, and under $350k (I'll need 1 partner) would you go with? Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  6. You're gonna have to have it serviced. Then in 2-3 years trade up while it is still good.
  7. Yeah, I put my hand on the Johnson (bar) and it takes no time at all to get it up. Seriously....since we had it serviced.
  8. I've tried several places and ended up mounting just to the right of centerline behind the windshield. I bought a few wire keepers to route the audio cable along the side. I found the videos to be more interesting with a full view out the windshield vs. half the frame being the instruments. Since the Virb records the GPS altitude and ground speed it's good enough for recording performance. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  9. We installed shoulder harnesses with the inertial reels and push button release. We have a J bar so having the reels was an absolute must. You need some mobility to work the gear and don't want to be re tightening the seat belt while low. The cost....less than an ER visit. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  10. I had a similar scenario arriving into Arnold Palmer the other day. I had to loose 3000 feet in 8 miles. Pulled to idle, slowed down to 120mph, dropped the gear, dove down, added a touch of power on the round out, squeaked it in. Only wish I had remembered to turn on the camera.
  11. Why the partial carb heat? Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  12. R.I.P. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  13. We have a B-kool cooler, and use reusable ice packs.
  14. When one pays for fuel service liability is assumed by the provider of the service. Part of the increased cost is to cover their liability. So, the $0.50 upcharge from self serve that we all sometimes pay is fixing this issue. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  15. Good advice. What's the best option that is not a VOR only replacement? I just don't see the point in spending a few thousand on legacy tech. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  16. I realize this topic is like asking someone about their favorite food or wine....but here goes. My partners and I have a 1962 M20C with about 4500 hours total flight time and 900 hours on the engine. The airplane is in overall great shape. Probably $60K hull value. My two partners are finishing their IFR tickets and fly for pleasure. I have my IFR ticket and use it regularly for both pleasure and business flight for this airplane. (would love an Ovation at some point) We have a Garmin 430W with GPSS to a STEC 30 w/atl hold, an old NAV2 VOR and old COM2....not sure the manufactures. We also have a new Lynx NGT9000+ transponder. The rest of the panel is steam gauge. Planning G5s in the next year or so. The NAV2 VOR has very poor reception and the NAV1 VOR on the 430W is ok, but not great. We suspect they might share the same antenna and cabling . We are going to have our avionics guy check out the signal strength to see if this is an easy fix. However, if it isn't, it opens a can of worms. If the NAV2 is shot my preference would be to toss it and do one of the following: 1) Buy a second 430W used. Toss the old COM2 as well and this becomes the new NAV/COM2. This is a relatively low cost option and I'm frankly not in the mindset of buying a VOR only NAV2 since I rarely use VOR navigation these days and the stations are becoming more rare. A second 430W would give me complete redundancy (minus electrical failure). Downside...how long with 430Ws be supported by Garmin? 2) Buy a new Garmin or Avidyne WASS NAV/COM and make it primary NAV/COM. Keep the existing 430W as NAV/COM2. Slightly more expensive and would require two navigation subscriptions. 3) Keep the 430W as the only NAV/COM and keep the existing COM2...no NAV2 backup except iPad with Stratus2 (yikes). Legal given it is WASS, but not something I am truely considering...convince me otherwise. 4) Go all in and do a big panel upgrade, but not sure it's worth it given this aircraft...and not sure my partners would do this either. 5) Pot luck....make another suggestion.
  17. 1962 M20C with old shock disks last year and we were fine. Should be better with the new disks this year! Be careful taxi slow, the bumps in the grass and transitions were the parts that I worried about, but did fine. Highly suggest the plywood squares for parking...just to make it easier to pull out to the isle when leaving.
  18. I've had the exact same thing happen. At the time I was new to the plane and the Johnson bar was really hard to lock down or up. The last few inches and getting the sleeve up to fully lock in either block was tough. Locking up over 80MPH was next to impossible. After the inadvertent gear down similar to the OP I learned to always do the thumbnail check in both the up and down block. I have two other partners in the airplane that didn't seem to have the same problem, so I just continued to struggle. About 9 months ago we had new shock disks installed and I had the A&P service the whole system. I remember the first flight after that and when putting the gear up I practically punched the floor as the gear went up with so little effort. Moral of the story, it shouldn't be that hard to swing the gear and get it in the block... and always do the thumbnail check up and down. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  19. It was soooo cool. Maybe I'm easily entertained. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  20. I went up last night to get night currency. Since it's the Saturday before the fourth, a few towns and people were setting things off. It was pretty cool, especially the smaller towns and farms where it was pitch black around them. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  21. A reminder to check TFRs....I doubt the small towns I would fly over in Indiana would have them, but NYC might.
  22. Has anyone gone flying on the Fourth of July to see fireworks? What altitude is good for passengers to view the fireworks? I've read professional fireworks can get up to 1500 AGL. So, maybe cruise at 3-4K AGL? Maybe higher to see multiple towns? Of course, you also need to be laterally offset by a mile or two to have a good view since Mooney's are a low wing. I'd appreciate any ideas.
  23. OP. I'm passing on this one. The M20C that I am currently a partner is slower and lacks TKS...but it is a known quantity. There are too many unknowns here. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
  24. Our Johnson bar can get down or up with ease after being serviced. I hope I fare as well at 55. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
