  1. I can’t help you with the intercom, but where I come from DRE stands for “digital rectal exam.” If you want, I’ll even use two fingers so I can give you a second opinion.
  2. In “The Armchair Economist” the author makes an excellent argument that ABS brakes change driving behavior and lead to increased accidents not because they inherently reduce safety but because they result in more aggressive behavior due to the perception that the consequences will be reduced. His solution was to place a big spike in the center of the steering wheel to encourage people to drive safely. I’ve heard similar arguments used for BRS, 2nd engines, high performance planes, etc. My driving behavior didn’t change when I got an ABS vehicle and I doubt it would change if I had a parachute. Maybe I’ll even strap a fire extinguisher to my pant leg just to be safe.
  3. I guess ignorance is bliss. When @Johnny mentioned the GW increase he didn’t mention ripping off the wings. Sounded like it was more of a landing gear change. Vortex generators (which I already have) have been used in other applications to increase gross weight as well. Good thing the old Cessnas that were retrofitted with BRS didn’t realize that they had to be redesigned from the ground up. Otherwise it would never have worked. As someone who actually stays within CG and weight limits, weighs passengers and weighs luggage it’s reassuring to hear they I don’t need to waste my time doing this anymore since apparently nobody cares. Or maybe my 30 years of flying just haven’t given me enough “experience” to be that complacent yet.
  4. Which makes you wonder how the people at Mooney decided that the reason planes weren’t selling was the lack of a second door and not the lack of parachute and useful load. I wonder how things would have gone differently if instead of adding a second door they had offered a GW increase and parachute.
  5. Maybe that’s why he was going to land gear up. Don’t have to worry about wearing out your brake pads that way.
  6. I know most think this is a non-emergency but planes crash not too infrequently because a door pops open which I think most would agree is a lesser problem. This guy freaked out, but landed safely. Seems like a good outcome to me especially considering he was seconds away from landing gear-up (assuming it’s the same plane as we’re discussing in the other thread - I didn’t click on the link).
  7. The green dot on the G500 synthetic vision is pretty nice. You’ll crash wherever that dot is.
  8. Good advertisement for an autopilot with the “level” feature. Maybe add a “flare” button. Would love to hear what made the yoke come off. Sounds like no fun!
  9. I have a FIKI system and fly it the same way you fly yours. I also didn’t start driving more aggressively when I got my first car with airbags and ABS brakes. Not everyone behaves that way, though.
  10. I try not to crash even with the right fuel! Just seems like a lot of people getting really worked up over nothing. Must be nice to not have anything else to worry about these days than the price of a fuel you can’t even buy yet. If I crash my plane, whether or not I’ve met a paperwork requirement really doesn’t matter to me.
  11. But is it approved for 100 LL or 100 octane or 98 octane 100 UL? You should probably buy the STC just to be safe in case you get ramp checked and the FAA starts draining your fuel tanks and tasting your fuel.
  12. I believe @N252MK has some experience flying FIKI and non-FIKI airplanes out of Seattle but he’s not on here very often.
  13. I’ll bet you the JetProp can get an STC as well. No need to get jealous of us piston guys. Seeing a therapist is sound advice, of course. This level of distress over the approval of unleaded fuel seems a little out of proportion.
  14. Interesting what the variations are in pop-up practices. My home airport gets a rapidly forming marine layer occasionally so I get pop ups a couple of times a year. I’m almost always on flight following and when I ask for a pop up they just ask me if I can maintain VFR at my current altitude then clear me to an IAF a few minutes later. I’ve never been asked if I’m rated or equipped for IFR or any of the other flight plan details. I also haven’t filed a VFR flight plan in a long time.
  15. It seems having you VFR on flight following might be easiest for the controller, but if I’m in busy airspace it’s way easier for me to go IFR because then I don’t have to worry about airspace. The only reason I would go VFR in San Diego is to do that beach run up the coast where you have to stay under 500’ and you get to buzz the Coronado Bridge and Black’s Beach (do they still let you do that?)
  16. Thanks for sharing your experience. “Unable” is a powerful word. When I first started flying I though of ATC clearances as the only option. It wasn’t until later that I realized it was just the first offer in a negation. If you like the offer then take it but if it doesn’t work for you let them know. 98% of controllers are very accommodating 98% of the time. Sometimes less so in busy airspace but they’ll still try to help you out. Keep in mind that most of them aren’t GA pilots so they may not realize how challenging it is at times. Single pilot IFR isn’t for the weak.
  17. “There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by a sufficient application of brute force and ignorance.”
  18. That’s what I’m hoping for. I wonder even if engines running 100 UL and synthetic oils will have a longer TBO.
  19. This is exciting news! Eager to see what the cost will be since I’m sure CA will be the first state to ban 100 LL.
  20. WINGS over SLO.pdf
  21. Have you looked at Skywagons? Fast + short field is challenging as @Fly Boomer pointed out.
  22. I think it was the batteries. They were dead. I ordered new ones for $16. I’ll report back on my progress.
  23. I flew with one of the local CFIs in Tahoe to learn the area and get some experience. He got so annoyed with everything screaming “Terrain Terrain Pull up” that he started pulling circuit breakers. It was pretty cool how the G500 shows you the path out of the canyon (assuming there is one). I just fly 2000’ above the ridgetops now. Less exciting that way.
  24. Expert Aircraft at French Valley might be an option. Kurt has done some work on my plane.
