  1. I agree. I always wanted to fly an F-15 since I played the video game on my Apple IIe. I remember reading it had a rate of climb of 50,000 fpm and it was the only fighter that could accelerate during a vertical climb because it’s thrust exceeded its weight. And I thought my Ovation on a cold day was pretty sporty! https://www.af.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/104499/f-15e-strike-eagle/
  2. Any Mooneyspace accounts? ;-)
  3. They need to put Mooney “influencers” on the payroll to sell their brand. I, for one, would be happy to do it for $10k/month. I’m quite effective at influencing my dog (especially with a treat in my hand). People, not so much but maybe what they really need is a dog mascot like Spuds Mackenzie. Hopefully they’re still working in completing those “very important projects.”
  4. I started an “Ovation vs Bravo” thread a few years ago and chose an Ovation. From what you described, I’d go for a TKS Bravo if you can find one. I have a FIKI Ovation and will probably keep that plane until I quit flying but if you’re serious about dealing with ice having both TKS and turbo is helpful. When you’re trying to get on top of an icing layer at 15k and you’re only seeing 300 fpm you start thinking that it sure would be nice to have a turbo.
  5. There’s a Crashtalk thread on Beechtalk about a guy who came back a little too soon from COVID and landed gear up. If you’re not back to 100%, I wouldn’t fly. Any when you do, watch the pulse ox.
  6. Funny. That looks identical to my “pilot isolate” tool for the intercom.
  7. Mine is in knots, of course. I’m a pretty smart guy too so when I know I’m going to fly into a busy airport like LAX I overinflate the tires by 20 psi so I get can that first notch of flaps in sooner.
  8. But, they didn’t explicitly say I couldn’t make up my own speed so I use 9*sqrt(tire pressure) + 1/2 wind gust component because I know better than those dumb lawyers writing the AFM.
  9. TL:DR Lots of comments. Little definitive guidance. Conservative approach: Use 115 KIAS for any degree of faps. Other approach: Make up an arbitrary speed and choose that as your partial flap setting because - well, no one said you couldn’t.
  10. I think there was a miscommunication somewhere. My BarcaLounger never arrived. I wouldn’t say everyone who crashed is an idiot, but I do think many of these outcomes were entirely predictable based on the actions taken by the pilot, often hours before the crash even occurred. The point of discussing this isn’t to call everyone an idiot, it’s to try to understand why a seemingly reasonable person thought that was a good idea at the time and how we can avoid making the same mistake if we find ourselves in a similar situation. I’ve learned a lot from other peoples crashes.
  11. I kind of agree with you. Unfortunately when perception and reality differ you still have to deal with the perceptions and to some people that is that GA aircraft are flown around by a bunch of unregulated bozos who could fall out of the sky and kill you and your family anytime. We both realize how ridiculous and statistically unlikely this is but the fact that every once in a while someone does exactly that doesn’t really help our case. I agree with Prof. Pi @aviatoreb that my reasons for trying to make good choices have less to do with GA’s public image and more to do with not trying to injure myself or my passengers in a plane crash. Unfortunately, all aircraft incidents are not avoidable and that’s the reality we have to deal with anytime we fly. That being said, I think this one was.
  12. Curious if the houses were there before the airport was. Some genius developer built $800k houses right off the departure end of my home airport. Can wait until those guys start complaining about how noisy and unsafe it is to have an airport right next to their house. Although the are taking about a transient landing fee now. This is definitely a black eye for GA and something that didn’t need to happen and could have been avoided with better decision making.
  13. It’s a nice panel! I don’t get the appeal of “clean” though. I like having a bunch of stuff to look at and configure any way I want it. With a G500, GTN 750/650 and panel mounted Aera 796 I feel like I can get way more information at once and I can modify it based on the situation. I’m not sure how empty space in the panel is helpful to a pilot (just like runway behind you, altitude above you or air in your tanks).
  14. I’ve noticed on ForeFlight sometimes the storm will have a line extending from it and four dots (circled in read). Does anyone know what they mean? Is that the predicted storm track at a certain time interval?
  15. I’ve never asked for or received a cruise clearance. I think I’d probably have to look it up on my FAR/AIM app just to make sure I wasn’t screwing something up.
  16. Don’t freak out if you get increased silicone in your next oil analysis.
  17. Expert Aircraft at F70 has worked on my Mooney and did a good job.
  18. This will make it all the more satisfying when you get Basicmed and never have to deal with this again. I think whoever came up with the TSA must have come from the medical division because it’s a lot about “security theatre” and making you jump through a bunch of hoops of questionable value in the name of risk reduction. Don’t get me started on their approach to mental health which punishes anyone willing to admit they have a problem and seek treatment.
  19. I’ve heard controllers say the visual approach is the easiest but today I got cleared for my RNAV approach 30 miles south of the IF (which I had been direct to for half an hour). Can imagine it gets any easier than that.
  20. @201er is “stinky pants.” Probably best if you get the story from him. From a distance.
  21. I see what you quoted. I’m not sure why my AME would have said otherwise but since I’m not an AME or an attorney I would proceed carefully and get professional advice. There’s always a possibility I misunderstood since we were just making conversation and I was tired of hearing about Twin Cessnas. I’m pretty sure he said that once you have your application in for a medical and it has not been issued you’re not eligible for basicmed until the process is complete.
  22. That is my understanding as well. Once you apply for your SI renewal you can’t do basicmed while it is pending. A quick call to AOPA legal should resolve the question of there still is one. After some offline discussions with some of the wiser members of Mooneyspace ( @Deb) I decided to do basicmed. It took about an hour total and now I’m good for 4 years.
  23. They talk about that on the Opposing Bases podcast. Apparently a lot of controllers aren’t familiar with it. There’s a story of a pilot requesting a contact approach and after a long pause the controller replies “contact approach on 124.3.” I think @EricJ may have been speaking from experience.
