The false sense of security is exactly why I talk about this very subject with pilots when I can. It is just that, but it's not intentional. The intent of adding the pilot as a Named Pilot is to solidify the fact that the policy is in effect while that person is PIC. However, some policies do provide a Waiver of Subrogation against Named Pilots so there can be value there as well but only value to the Named Pilot. In those cases, the Named Insured now bears the financial burden of the Named Pilot's mistake. It's actually a great value for the Named Pilot because it implies that they've contributed nothing to the premium and have no adverse effects, as it financially relates to insurance, after the loss. If you loan me a drill and I break it, I now owe you another drill. Sure, you allowed me to use it but that is not consent for me to damage it and walk away. I borrow it knowing that risk. At the end of the day, these are the circumstances we all are subject to. That being the case, I think it's really important to keep everyone aware as to the dynamics involved so that they can manage themselves accordingly.

Broad language gives you, the owner and actual insured, the most protection. Subrogation allows the company to recover from the liable party with respect to the hull in this context. However, if one wants to have a $60K gear up on their policy record when it wasn't their fault, I suppose that's their call.

What the policy is saying is that the policy is "in effect" while the named pilot and/or person meeting the OPW are flying the aircraft. So, the Named Insured is covered for the hull and any liability while the subject pilot has the full protection of the policy with respect to any liabilities (think Property Damage and Bodily Injury). However, there is typically a provision in the policy that provides no benefit to the bailee with respect to damage to the hull. That being the case, the carrier can subrogate against the liable party. The policy is basically giving someone else permission to fly the Named Insured's aircraft but is still holding them accountable for any damage that they may cause to it. Take insurance out of it and simply say you let someone borrow your aircraft. They then damage it. Just because you let some one use it does not give them the right to damage it without consequence. The carrier now steps into those same shoes once the loss has been settled. The OPW and N. Pilot list is way for the underwriters to better understand/control the risk. If it is anyone other than the N. Insured, OPW or N. Pilot, the claim could likely be denied in its entirety.

This is my biggest soap box when I'm talking to other pilots. Make sure you have your own coverage for the hull if you're flying someone else's aircraft unless you fully understand the subrogation language in the other person's policy.

Now I'm curious to see how long it remains so. Garmin and free don't mesh well! -
Weight and Balance Calculator - Excel or Foreflight?

I know it's not the true question but fltpln.com has a WTB function that's served me well. -
Interested in the GTX345. Is it still available?

Not only that, you'll want to make sure that you have a waiver of subrogation and/or your policy contains non-owned coverage.

Those are close to the numbers I see. Interestingly, prior to overhaul, my #3 cylinder was the hottest. Now, and some 300 post overhaul, my #2 is generally running 380-390 (cruise vs climb).

Any J's in New England (MA) I can check out?
jwilcoxon78 replied to Steve_B's topic in General Mooney Talk
The paint appears to be in great shape but I believe there are better choices out there from an avionics perspective. I've seen one out there with a GTN750 (you'll not regret that) and an Aspen1000Pro plus some. Paint's not in great shape though. Cheaper to paint than to upgrade avionics. -
I'm up at CNI. Happy to help you out. Just let me know.

Wife and I did a year or so ago from JWN. I don't recall the fair amount though and it was a bit of a wait to get one there. Depending on where you're going, I'd say it could almost be a wash between fuel price and Uber fair. I'm getting more to the viewpoint that, we have an airplane for convenience so why make things inconvenient (within reason anyways). I've flown into BNA a few times. It's not bad. There's actually a flight school there.

I'm not sure I follow your reply. I was adding to Parker_Woodruff's comment.

YES! Read your policy. Ask questions. With respect to the OPW, folks need to be careful here. By folks I mean those flying under the OPW. Generally, the policy will provide liability coverage to the OPW pilot. However, they may be held liable for the damage caused to the Named Insured's aircraft. This is why a Non-Owned policy is important.

My ailerons do the same on my J. MSC said they wouldn't bother with it but I'll likely have them or someone else check it out down the road. It does seem that it would take some efficiency out of the airframe.

Take a look at Air Services in Carrollton, GA (KCTJ).

Why doesn't anyone sell non-solo renters insurance?
jwilcoxon78 replied to RobertGary1's topic in General Mooney Talk
So long as you have non-owned coverage on your policy, that is correct. -

What's important is that you're thinking of your non owned exposure. There are too many pilots out there that assume they can't be held liable for physical damage to another person's aircraft if they meet the open pilot warranty and/or are a named pilot. This is generally not the case, unless there's a waiver of subrogation contained in the policy as well. -

I was "hit" by one on a flight a few years ago. I was cruising at around 8K if I recall and in the middle of no where really. So, when I realized what it was, my next thought is, how did they find me and why? I wouldn't worry too much about it being affixed to a firearm. If the laser is trained on the aircraft, they're not leading near enough.

I went with these guys to. Even refinanced so to speak on an overhaul. Very easy on both accounts.
