  1. Unfortunately neither of those are legal for install in a certified aircraft. I have been watching the Levil Beacon ever since they first announced it, and claimed it would be certified, but they keep pushing back the expected certification date. When I talked to them in their booth at OSH this year I was given the impression that certified aircraft were basically not a priority for them anymore, and not to hold my breath. I think the announcement of a system that is similar in install difficulty and at virtually the same pricepoint by Garmin may have been a factor in the decision to stay experimental.
  2. I think your biggest difficulty will be the wing location. Really the photographer will need to be shooting out of the rear window. I don't know of anyone making anything specific for the mooney, but have seen people get field approvals for oversized storm window openings on various aircraft for the right side.
  3. Clearly not all of them. Mine is a 68.
  4. Affirmative.
  5. My C does not have a hat rack, and I'd love to add it. I'd be interested in what you'd want for the pieces, as well as some pics of how it goes together from the back side. Thanks!
  6. This is more or less what I do with my C. When it's cold I turn the pump on til it's showing fuel pressure, give it 3 pumps of the throttle and start cranking. When it's hot the procedure is the same but with only 1 or 2 pumps of the throttle. If I shut it off within the last 5 minutes then just crank with no pumping. I did recently upgrade to one of the little gear reduction starters that spins the engine really fast and that has made starting ridiculously easy, but it's never been difficult.
  7. I have been looking hard at it, and talked to the garmin folks at OSH as well. I DO have a WAAS GPS so for me it's even more appealing because they said I could simply T into my existing antenna cable, making for a VERY simple install. I'm hoping they will sell it to me minus the antenna for a bit of savings there as well, but I kinda doubt it.
  8. Does it have a hat rack?
  9. I'm hoping he just meant to pull the engine back to idle. Of course even pulling the mixture out the engine is gonna keep windmilling at around 1800rpm or so. I can speak from experience here after running a couple tanks dry on purpose and not anticipating the timing well enough.
  10. I thought my C model was noisy, until I started flying a stripped down C206 skydive plane with the door open all day :-p
  11. I flew to S75 Payette Idaho. It was incredible, far more incredible that I expected. Photos and video simply cannot do it justice.
  12. My bet would be on the Brittain AP unit that ties into the wing leveler. I have it in my plane, and it does a good job of following a course when on a long flight, but that's about it.
  13. The cover should fit TIGHT. Mine fits like a glove and the straps have a section of bungee in them to keep it pulled tight. Once it's on it doesn't move. From planecover.com
  14. Glad to hear it guys! I just got back in town after a second summer trip. Sounds like a few people are looking for hoodies so I'll talk to the shirt place and start putting together another order. I also have a small handful of extra T-Shirts in case anyone missed out and would still like one.
  15. Lots of input on the Xwind component here so I'm not even gonna add to that. I can give specific experience on the problem of getting down to SMO from the south. I assume you're using the SFRA, so coming north west bound at 4500. As soon as you clear the LAX bravo call SMO, they will simply tell you to make right traffic. Tell them you'd like a left 270 to join the downwind, they will give it to you, they know the deal. At this point drop the gear and flaps to get slow. Then continue past the airport as far as you feel comfortable going towards the hills, make that 270 big enough and you can easily get to pattern altitude without any slipping or extreme maneuvers. I generally end up nearly passing over pacific palisades and going off shore a little. The tower knows you need to bleed altitude and are used to people doing exactly that. This is pretty much how I get to SMO every time I go, including when I take my girlfriend whose ears cannot take any kind of a rapid descent.
  16. I would totally make a joke about the packing habits of women, but don't want to get flamed for sexism. :-p
  17. LEDs have a rather strange ability to be able to shine colored light through a different colored lens. Watch the rear turn signals on a newer model Range Rover some time. Amber LEDs that shine through a red lens, but definitely look amber when lit. I'll definitely be looking for these at OSH
  18. Pinnacle at CRQ still has 201DD, and it doesn't fly a whole lot. I taxi past it every time I fly. I think mainly it doesn't fly much because they won't let anyone take it without an instructor and they pretty much only use it for complex endorsements and CPL training as far as I can tell.
  19. Until I actually got into the new Acclaim Ultra at OSH last year I had the same thoughts about getting in and out. They not only made the door longer, but it also wraps farther up the roof than the old planes. This makes it much easier to get in and out.
  20. With the very small quantities being produced it's unlikely that a lot of the modern mass production techniques would be of much benefit, and might actually be more costly. It's not like they are pumping them out by the dozens anymore.
  21. I do believe there are going to be a few of the Mooney Caravan pilots doing some formation practice that day, possibly in the area.
  22. Why not park and camp in the same place?
  23. interesting response there. Sounds kinda like an antenna is an antenna and if it's good quality it'll pick up whatever there is to pick up and it's the receiver that has to be able to figure out the data.
  24. Mine has a sticker right on it that says for ground use only
  25. I knew I had seen it somewhere. Here's a screen shot of the installation manual. I think the misunderstanding is that "receiver" is NOT the same as "Antenna" . The receiver cannot receive without an antenna.
