  1. I agree, very nice job how long did it take?
  2. Seems kind of pointless to me IMHO I seldom have to use much braking at all even when landing on runways less than 3000 ft. I would think it would also need some sort of bypass system for differential braking while making those tight turns on the ramp. The best safety system is planning ahead for the landing just like when you are going to land on grass or dirt etc.
  3. The 201 windshield mod looks great but as far as I know it removes you ability to access your avionics from the top cover and when it's time to get into that area being able to take off that back top cover makes it real nice for access. But I agree it does look nice. It falls under the form vs function debate.
  4. My 64 already had it installed and it is riveted it also has a different top cowl that comes down closer to the spinner. I would talk to Dan or Paul at LASAR I'm sure they will be happy to tell you what is required to install their mod. I don't know what the top cowl mod is but I think it cleans up the big old guppy mouth real nice.
  5. Had a break in the weather today not enough to fly but good enough to get the Christmas lights on the house. Ho ho ho ! Tomorrow might be good enough to put the wheels up in the wells.
  6. My point is you need a customer base and your correct about the buggy whip example first lesson taught in ecomics 101 there will always be purists like me that know music is better if left analog and not compressed into some crap digital imitation but I don't represent the masses. those of us that are old enough to really know life before computers there was a real facination with flight. Now it's virtual this and virtual that. I fear for those that are just now discovering the joy that we know as pilots they may only get to ride around in computer controlled helicopter pods. Poor little Timmy, sorry wrong thread.
  7. Digital is cheaper than analog to manufacture but that's not the big issue here. You need to have a thriving market and let's face it the private pilot population is on its last legs we are the end my friends. Even the auto industry is freaking out because young people today don't care to own a car. Research has shown a 25% drop in the under 30 crowd that want to own a car kids today don't even Think getting a drivers license is that important any more. In the utopian world they ride public transportation instead and are taught that cars are killing the planet. As for me if I could I would love to have a TN glass panel like new J for under half the cost of a new Mooney. If this is something you are going to do I wish you well and applaud your enthusiasm.
  8. Despite the efforts of Moon beam Brown and all the high costs of doing business in California we still have the largest economy in the country ( please correct if I'm mistaken ) I remember watching a show on the history channel or discovery about this factory in Long beach that makes the main spars for all the Boings and Airbusses it was very interesting. setting up shop at Chino and revitalizing Kerville seems like a well thought out plan. Southern California has many of the engineering design companies that create all kinds of products that get manufactured elsewhere. I doubt I will ever have the means to afford a new airplane but I'm all about the bigger picture that General aviation continues to survive
  9. My dad was an Oakland police officer through the 60 and 70's and that was when the anti war riots were pretty bad in Berkeley and Oakland and the Black panthers and hells angels were based there. I would never want to do that job it's a different world today cops getting killed on routine traffic stops. People are getting more unspooled with each generation you have to expect deadly violence if you get upset at someone just taking cuts in line or telling someone to turn off their phone in a theater. Thanks LBJ for such a "Great Society"
  10. I am climbing at 2700 WOT and between 120 and 130 my head temp is right at 400 and oil is around 180 to 190 depending on OAT but that's just coming off the original cluster gauge in warmer weather. When it's cool outside it stays under 400 but I don't know how accurate those gauges are. My engine temps and performance are very consistent in all phases of flight. David what were your temps on those different climbs. When in cruise I pull 1 inch off MP lean to just rich of rough at 2500 and trail my cowl flaps slightly and that will leave me at 380 degrees head and oil at 160 to 180.
  11. What kind of warranty would it have. And i did look at the J on controller and Jose makes a good point. I think the kicker would have to be a normalized engine to make it a real seller.
  12. I'm not sure about the costs but I would think that you would want to make the panel updated and the cost to refit a panel with new or like new steam gauges might actually cost more than glass units all the new LSA are going with glass and they are keeping the price point around 100k plus or minus. And with that I would definitely consider a 300k like new J over a same price 172 if and when I was ready to upgrade from My C
  13. We just call Enterpise
  14. If I could go back in time I would love to see an Apollo launch that must have been amazing.
  15. The Saturn 5 is still the bad ass of the sky, I watched the lift off this morning on Fox. Oops I just showed my hand.
  16. Checking carb heat is a habit I learned from training in my Cessna you see a drop similar to mag check. If not and you get carb icing well nuf said and when I chop power in the pattern it's always applied but you must be ready to push it in on the go.
  17. Much as I resist the urge to post on the Timmy debate (cuz I'm really bad at debating) news flash the earth is not a dead ball and according to some things I have read and watched is still making fossil fuel. Even the anti fossil fuel crowd has had to accept this fact. None of this is about saving the planet or left vs right or any of that its all about control and posturing for power. It goes beyond Washington it's about global control and agenda 21 where we will all be herded into urban zones and private property rights will be sacrificed using the save the planet as the mantra for this ultimate end. As a species we can no more save this planet than kill this planet. God the vanity of humans. Let's say the super volcano that is centered around Yellostone decides to erupt and causes a real climate change are you going to stop the change by driving a Prius I doubt it. As for political debate they are all full of crap and care only about themselves. And even though the government says we did not build that well that's a load of crap too taxes pay for it the government then appropriates the funding and private industry does the work. I have never driven by a bridge project where the names on the sides of the trucks said U.S. Govt bridge company. Blah Blah Blah!
  18. Good job Mike, Whenever we go to other fields I always look for the proper tails on the ramp. When you see them snap a pic and put it here. I'll start with an older one.
  19. Thunder, I think the word here is "patience " looks like you have made some good choices toward aircraft ownership by getting rid of some items that once you own your Mooney you won't be spending much time on anyway. The thing to do now is regroup and think about the future build a strategy and put everything you can into your war chest. Unless you are really old or are suffering from a terminal illness you have the time till you are able to purchase and it will pass quicker than crap through a goose. In the mean time you will continue to learn more and be able to know what your mission is and which Mooney fits the bill. You might also look into a partnership. Most importantly don't get frustrated as long as you keep you sites on target you will succeed.
  20. Consider yourself lucky that you found mooney space before you make your purchase there are so many examples here for what to do and more importantly what not. The problem is not ending up spending a ton of money on multiple PPi's so picking a good candidate is important. Since doing very involved owner assisted annuals and after all the things I have learned on MS and the many other sources I could now do a pretty thorough PPI myself. Don't be shy get the selling party to open up the airplane. My biggest concern would be corrosion and find someone that understands log books and really spend time looking at the history and when you find one that really looks good then make the investment on your PPI. Lake Aero Styling has a good pre buy document you can use to help with your personal inspection. As always good luck and don't forget this is supposed to be fun!
  21. Yes the lower 48 is what I meant but the point is a lot of people don't show the Sierras the respect that they deserve they are some beautiful but very unforgiving mountains. Correction accepted
  22. 1700 for the mag and carb heat 1900 for the prop and when cycling the prop I was advised to just a couple hundred rpm drop before pushing back in and not to do the big rpm drop I hear so many others do. 2 pumps for the flaps on takeoff also if it's hot or at a high field I will set at 2000rpm and adjust mixture to best rpm. Climb is at WOT 2700 all the way to level off between 120 and 130 mph depending on temps. Cruise is at 2500 and at the altitude I fly I seldom see more than 23 MP at WOT. Unless I'm landing on something under 3000 ft runway I only set flaps to takeoff position in case I have to go around. Welcome to Mooney now you must provide some pictures of your new wings. Mine is a converted 1964 D same year as yours.
  23. My only experience with the PC is from things I have read. I have an Stec 30 with no alt hold and I must say I really like it. It fly's the heading bug or the NAV really well my avionics guy said the alt hold is an easy upgrade but my plane trims out real well and requires little attention to stay on altitude. It's fun to let it make my waypoint turns keeps the ball dead center. The only thing I find is when I hit rough air it starts to struggle to keep up don't know if that's normal when that happens I just put it into standby until back in smoother air. Knowing the cheap sucker I am I don't think I would spend the money for it but I am glad it's there. On a long cross country the smoke was so thick we got into zero zero and between the Stec and the I pad we were just fine I just let Snoopy fly himself while I sorted things out to get back into visible air.
  24. The thing is I would love to have most (not all) of the panels you poor unfortunate Mooniacs are pulling out of your planes. I try not to think about it and remain thankful for my airplane and the ability to fly.
