  1. Didn’t know that there was a problem with Mooney’s throwing blades
  2. Tried to look up how many aircraft are based there but couldn’t get an answer wondering if they are using city owned hangars on yearly leases or long term leases. Seriously doubt the new “owners” are going to want to co exist with the existing GA community. Death by attrition one city, oops I mean one airport at a time.
  3. THX, 76srat looking at the FAA registry I show only my Mooney with my N number and if I do a serial number search there are dozens of different types including my D and the E that we discovered plus an m18 so based on that I think it’s a non issue.
  4. Actually it was both, first a matching N number then the discovery of a matching serial number. I have put the issue into the nothing to see here category.
  5. This just breaks my heart, hope the surviving passenger makes a quick and complete recovery and can shed some light on what happened. Following this thread you could feel the excitement about the new to him Mooney. Also the frustration trying to solve the issue but what was he to do after he was told that the problem was solved including test flights. I agree with the comments that conditions should have been a no go for a new to him flight with a possible issue with reliability. this really sucks
  6. It may come as a surprise to some of you that not everyone flying and owning a Mooney has massive amounts of disposable income that can just provide a significant investment into something so ambiguous as this. Don’t want to see LASAR or Mooney fail but it’s really not our responsibility to insure their success. People are free to do whatever they like with their money but I take offense from anyone trying to guilt folks into this.
  7. I think a Picasso painted tool shed would look awesome
  8. Welcome to the hotel California
  9. Not helpful but very funny
  10. Checked and reporting facility was Kansas City center. So likely an entry error. But searching further discovered that there is an m20e same year as our d that shares the same serial number in the FAA registration records I understand that pre 1966 serial number assigned were not as specific ie year and model related and were just sequential. This raises a question about whether I need to take action with the FAA I know the data plate on our D is consistent with the registration on file. Looking at the pictures of the E it’s a nice looking plane and has a different tail number.
  11. Thanks, I’ll check the reporting facility. It’s never happened before so makes sense that it was just a typo and not a miss registration. 190 knots wish it was me.
  12. Hey Scott, I know mine is a o360 and not the same but every time I do the first start of the day it fires instantly but it’s a very sudden almost like a bang and then perfectly smooth. It’s not a backfire like a jolt kind of hard to describe but it’s always done this. When I crank it I don’t even see two blades before it starts. I don’t know if that’s what you’re describing but kind of sounds the same. Might be nothing. I re read your description and see where you have sputtering first so that would be different than what I experience except for violent part. Could be the difference between a carburetor prime and an FI one.
  13. I went to flight aware to review my flight yesterday and entered my tail number and my two flights came up but there was a third flight that had the same number and was listed as a Mooney but with an unknown owner. The flight was a couple weeks ago in Illinois the profile showed a cruise speed of around 190 at 7500. Seems very strange any one had this happen to them.
  14. Yesterday my CFI friend and I took a short flight to LVK for an AOPA town hall. The turnout was a full house the new CEO made a very nice presentation first about his history in GA and then a pretty detailed list of issues that they are focusing on for the coming year. It’s very clear that he has a real commitment to the GA community. Weather was perfect for our flight except for a real strong headwind for the flight home mostly no better than mid one twenties miles per hour ground speed but surprisingly smooth nevertheless. He flew the P51 pictured below. Another famous attendee was Julie Clark in her beautiful 34 sadly I was the only Mooney on the ramp.
  15. This beauty visited our home field some years back and was taking folks for rides. What’s important about this photo is the signage in the background.
  16. This translates to approximately 147ktas which makes more sense. I honestly can’t tell you what the RPMS were but I normally cruise at 2400 even up high. I know that our little C models are amazing for the speed you get from 180hp but 160 knots does seem a bit questionable
  17. In this day and age we are seeing much of our young people that have been convinced that driving cars and let’s be honest even mowing our lawns with anything powered by gas is going to destroy the planet and don’t even want to get a driver’s license. And oh yes the evil piston airplanes we love so much are included in that. So any one who has a passion for driving and modifying what they can to make it more fun I’m in support of. once upon a time I was that guy. Some do it better than others but I think the desire is coming from the same place. Unfortunately with our certified aircraft we can’t just start replacing camshafts and pistons and connecting nitrous for more speed we are very limited to what’s possible for improved speed which brings me back to the point about your quest for speed. Following the suggestions before you might gain a few knots but other than a turbo which I think is still possible you’re pretty much there already. Depending on the weather I can get 140 to 145 knots if I push it but 135 is a nice easy pace for my D/C and I’m just fine with that. Regardless have fun with whatever ever you do.
  18. Welcome Jonathan, might want to add some more information about your Mooney or just another post to help us get to know you better and that you are not a one post wonder that we seem to get here often.
  19. Many years ago the fuel pumps in my 89 f250 started failing both front and rear tanks. Put some MMO in the tanks and problem never came back. Still to this day running just fine.
  20. The problem wasn’t that Lucas couldn’t make a good system it was the company’s using their product paid minimum pounds for the complete packages so corners had to be cut to remain profitable. Many formula one teams used their injection and ignition systems to great success during the sixties and seventies including one of the most successful engines in the sport the ford Cosworth DFV
  21. Not at all, definitely points out how verbal communication is superior to text. I think we are all impacted greatly by this accident as fellow pilots and I understand the desire to find out what caused this tragedy. Sadly sometimes we never get the answer.
  22. Not sure how my comment would be offensive I merely pointed out that the J had shoulder harness and I would hope they were being used. As for EGT being the possible cause for poor performance well that’s certainly a possibility and no one wants to know what causes accidents more than this pilot. As much but not more it’s how we learn and fly safely. Hopefully we will get an answer to what caused this terrible accident resulting in such a tragic loss. As for this pilot I can tell if something is amiss when I start when I taxi when I run up and especially when I am making my takeoff role. But then I’ve been flying this same airplane for twelve years and have become very familiar with it. Possibly the pilot just didn’t have enough time to gain that feeling for his plane. Anyway I just hate it when we hear these stories. I know it’s a reality that we all accept when we take to the skies. There is a great line in Lonesome Dove when Augustus says to call I ain’t talking about dying I’m talking about living. God bless us aviators with safe skies.
  23. First of all I want to express my sadness for the people that lost their lives and their loved ones. As always the gallery is searching for answers and we are now discussing EGT’s and seat belt designs. Please correct me if I’m incorrect but doesn’t the 1984 J come with shoulder harness as standard equipment. God bless
  24. Perhaps we should consider the possibility that snack bar A10 wants a Mooney. After all we all love our Mooneys I know I love ours. I can cruise at 172 speeds and am probably not more than 6gph. But if I want to go 140 plus knots it’s available to me. Our D has a useful load of 1010 pounds. Hope you find something that works for you.
  25. Seems simple to me, you wouldn’t take the whole family for a drive in a 911 if that’s the goal you need an SUV with wings I hear the big Bonanza’s are nice
