  1. My thoughts on all of these theories of engine management is there just isn't enough controlled testing to prove either way. There are some obviously well thought out theories and supporting evidence that supports and contradicts both sides. Just take care of your stuff and what happens will happen.
  2. You can write off whatever you want, the question is will you get audited (caught....). My accountant says anything that has aviation in the company name has higher chance of being audited. Call the company name something like abc consulting. And don't quote me in your audit please....
  3. I run a manufacturing company and over the years I have had several plastic extrusion dies made. I would be interested in helping find a manufacturer and guide the process to sourcing this. I would estimate tooling cost at about $700, typically I don't pay for that but I buy 100,000's of thousands of lineal feet of extrusion. If someone could get me a 12" sample I would be willing to take to my extrusion and plastics guys and start getting some numbers. No idea on $/ft, but I would guess less than 1$/ft. Based on what I buy and a guess on silicone pricing and that is a wild wild guess.
  4. The big problem is that too many people listen to these celebrity asshats. Obviously nobody on MS is that ignorant, or at least I hope they aren't.
  5. I am getting the feeling my Moritz gauges are about to start giving me troubles and thinking I need to be ready to bite the bullet and replace them. I was wondering if there is room to mount the 900 in the vertical position and remove the new tach(310 upgrade) and the clock? I like to have gauges right in front of me.
  6. Wow we are up to buying two airplanes? CB club out the window on that.
  7. Since we seem to have a pretty smart and diverse experience group of people around here I thought I would get some opinions on security systems. I have a factory plant, about 230,000 sq feet that I want to monitor. I don't need to cover every single square foot and one camera would cover lots of territory in certain cases. I have heard less than complementary things about the in the box solutions and some debate about IP cameras, resolution, etc and so on. If I google it I get about a million different pages from a million different re-sellers. Internet just makes it too damn confusing sometimes. Thanks, Mark
  8. I have a ovation 2 with the 310 hp upgrade and the new primary electronic tachometer but my moritz gauge is showing 3000 rpm plus on TO and eventually settles down to proper reading but still fluctuates a lot, think of it as an average reading.... I really like the moritz gauge and I know they are problematic but before I give up on it completely, anything so I can check easily? Do the independent gauges use the same sensor? I suspect the gauge is bad, but really trying to avoid that scenario.
  9. Steven, well it flys outdoors (sorry I am a smart ass), otherwise it is hangared. I think it was installed about 4 years ago and I believe has been hangared most of its life, at least since TKS install. The boots seem to be well attached, just looking weathered. Although it looks like some of the channels are eroding a bit, i.e. they aren't clean smooth, just have a lot of roughness to them. Wondering if anything should be done to maintain them.
  10. I have one of them fancy TKS deicer/anti-icer contraptions on my plane and the rubber slinger portion of the prop is starting to look weather aged. The system isn't that old and I am curious if anything should be used or more importantly SHOULD NOT be used to maintain this probably very expensive piece of rubber. I don't recall seeing any references in the AFM but I am having this random thought while working in office. And beat the hell out of Arkansas. (college football reference for those unaware) Thanks, Mark
  11. The Swift STCs are not cheap: $350 is not an uncommon number. It's too bad that neither EAA or AOPA is involved in these STCs. If they were I would hope that they could negotiate lower costs. $350 is cheap barely registers on the aviation scale. My opinion only.
  12. I don't have enough experience or thoughts either way on this, but I was told to switch batteries every 1/2 hour. If the concern is the relay arcing shouldn't this switch be turned with the battery OFF? With no alternator all ship power is going through the relay, if the alternator is online it is feeding the bus somewhere, thereby reducing current flowing through. Again I am taking a wild ass guess at this.
  13. By back light, do you mean the light that makes it readable in daylight? The digital readout on my OT has gotten hard to read like in daylight, like it is dimmed or something.
  14. Now you made me do some work and real research...... http://www.avweb.com/news/maint/183932-1.html Under maintenance practice they mention the pencil and it's affect.
  15. I noticed a mark where you are drilling for the EGT probe. I hope you didn't use pencil. Somewhere I was told or read that you shouldn't use pencil on exhaust manifolds as their is some type of interaction between the pencil lead and the metal and will lead to cracks. If anybody can verify this or tell me old wives tales please correct me.
  16. Well I am one of those guys who is always in compliance with the FAR's and keep my iPad on my lap.... . But I would like to put my full size iPad on my ovation 2 yoke and am curious what RAM mount will work? I looked at their web site and was overwhelmed by choices.
  17. Not just build a wall and send them all back and vet any further Canadian pennies from coming in.
  18. Buy about 5 of them and tie them all together and then go buy a boat and use them as anchors.
  19. Played hookie from work Friday and took my son and his friend and dad from Richmond down to Okracoke NC for a day at the beach. First flight in small airplane for my sons friend and dad. The dad was super impressed, the kids not so much.....damn video games I guess. In any case only 1.2 hours both ways and got used out of RIC heat just a bit.
  20. One of my Piper driving friends who has flown in six years in a row said it has been the most disrespectful, rule breaking, non compliance arrival he has ever seen. Going to get on my soapbox and say it probably just reflects what is happening in America as a whole.
  21. Not to beat a dead horse too much, but has anybody heard updates on the KI-300? Seems like a solution to me. My MX guy is at OSH told him to stop by the Bendix King booth and get an update.
  22. You are a brave man.
  23. I have my theory on this (as a completely random side topic I also bought a pressure switch for my compressor)..... I think they bulk them up and put them on an air freight container and if the plane has cubes and weight available they throw that container on. The shipping label had some markings and identification on that were unfamiliar. Also the shipping package was completely untouched, i.e. didn't look like it went through the machines at any sorting facilities. I realize this doesn't answer any questions but it is a theory I am going with.
  24. I understand you want it right away, meaning it will cost you lots of money. If you send me the dimensions and a city in Australia and origin I will be more than happy to quote it LCL for you, just for grins. But it will need to be crated and will take some time on the water.
  25. I live in Richmond and would recommend flying into RIC and getting rental car from there.
