Our has been fluctuating and now is just completely intermittent. 0 or normal and randomly decides to switch from one to the other. No word from the mechanic on a cause.

I'm really not sure. One broke at annual, I assume the ring broke when they removed the plug. This same one (#3 again) is intermittent 3 months later. The previous ones have just gone open loop but I never thought to ask the mechanic if they broke physically or what. I suspect this one might be a bad solder, something about #3 is a bear for him to wire. Maybe it's the fact that he tests them with a propane torch... Since I posted this the flaps and fuel flow transducer crapped out so I got bigger fish to fry temporarily haha

The explanation I have seen around here is that it is a required instrument to operate the e gone within the parameters of the poh. It seems about 50/50 on required or not. Our ei is more accurate anyway but not certified for primary.

The spark plug ring style. My ASSumption is we can't use the cannon plug style because our reiff engine heater is occupying the slots. They break when the plugs are removed sometimes as you eluded to, but mostly ours just quit for no real reason without anyone touching the plugs. As they're something like 200 bucks to replace I'm hoping someone makes a compatible unit that's a little more robust. It's a tsio-360lb fwiw.

We use the ei ring style cht probes for our ei analyzer. We are replacing these probes like it's our freaking job, one about every 20 hours it seems. Is there either a better alternative to these things or possibly something the mechanic is doing that's killing them? They're really not cheap either!

A couple scenarios. Some controllers like to assign headings rather than turn 10,20,30 degrees left/right. It's really dumb to give you a 320 heading because your ground track is 310 but you're already flying a 320 heading for the wind. N1234 say heading. N1234 heading 320. N1234 fly heading 330, vector traffic. If you have traffic next to you deviating into you for weather. They'll aks what heading they want, what heading you're on, and assign you the heading they're deviating to so they don't deviate into you. There are millions more. I think it probably varies some by center but most orient their scopes to true north and not magnetic.

Mmmmm.... They have no idea what your wind correction is hence the question. They can measure your magnetic course in 3 seconds.
