Not the way to start a white christmas ski trip!
cnoe replied to kortopates's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
And as I've mentioned at least three times in this thread he canceled ifr and went ahead on his own. Center usually doesn't take responsibility to disseminate notams, hence the question to you have the atis/notams for kxxx before giving you an approach clearance. I absolutely agree; if you cancel IFR and go VFR then ATC has no responsibility to notify you of runway closures. This appears to be the case in Colorado. But if you're on an IFR flight plan, checked notams at your last stop, and are in IMC on a vectored approach then ATC should do their very best not to give you an approach clearance to a closed runway. But even then the ultimate responsibility for the safe completion of a flight is on the shoulders of the PIC (thus my "I don't trust ATC" comment). Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -

So, you're telling me there was no notam out, and somehow center is supposed to know that whoever decided to close the runway did so without telling them, but somehow they were supposed to tell you what they don't know? Certainly they can't tell me what they don't know. After landing and going to LTE internet the NOTAM (closure) was on Foreflight. I'm not certain that it didn't show up during the approach procedure through my FIS-B data link (and that uncertainty is my own failure). As a relatively new Instrument pilot what I learned (and wanted to share) is that just because you receive an approach/landing clearance it doesn't guarantee that the runway won't have a DC3 (or a snowplow) sitting on it. At the MAP you better be looking to see what's in front of you, and be ready to go missed if it ain't pretty. It may or may not be a failure of the system but I think ATC should get timely information on runway closures and not issue such clearances if at all possible. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -

6 months ago I'd have considered it odd, but then flying into Tullahoma for the AOPA Fly-in in October Memphis Center gave me vectors and clearance for the RNAV 36 approach in sucky weather after dark. We broke out fairly low announcing intentions on the CTAF and when no runway lights were visible at MDA I went missed. A kind soul on the radio suggested Rwy 6 and we circled to land without issue. It turned out that a DC3 had been parked at the approach end of 36 and the runway had been closed, all while we were in the air dodging severe thunderstorms. I'd checked notams on the ground at the previous fuel stop and Center was obviously unaware of the closure as well. Being an uncontrolled airport there was no ATIS either. I'm not sure if my Foreflight ADS-B info mentioned the closure in flight but it (the closure NOTAM) finally showed up on the ground after landing. I no longer trust ATC to give me accurate info at uncontrolled fields. -
Never seen this in my hangar. This could be caused by a sudden high temp drop at night and poor sealing of the hangar doors. Mine has rubber seals all around. Overnight temps drop here in Florida are not as high as in Texas. José We don't have rubber seals on our hangar doors here in texas. We're lucky if the doors have wheels that actually roll. I would love to have a more modern hangar but I was on a waiting list for over 2 years just to get the one I'm in, and with the current state of aviation nobody's building any new ones. [emoji19] At 13 miles from the coast with a good roof vent I don't see the condensation shown above but on a cool humid morning the skins will sometimes be moist. Bi-annual corrosion-x, camguard, and weekly flights seem to keep everything in working order. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

It's not the size of the hangar, but what what goes inside that matters.[emoji57] And hopefully, that doesn't matter either. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Santa. Are you listening?[emoji318]

Beautiful plane both aesthetically and mechanically. I just don't see how all those goodies fit under the hood. Reminds me of a 6-cylinder Mustang (not a P-51) that we shoe-horned a 429SCJ into back in the 70s. It ran great, but in those pre-platinum spark-plug days we had to pull the engine about every 25,000 miles to install new ones. Twas a bit tight.[emoji16] Keep up the good work; I love seeing this sort of thing! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

No skiing this trip, my wife doesn't ski and it's been a full white out on the mountain all week. DRO has been OVC200 1/4mile vis and heavy snow for three days now. But the stars are out tonight, and there is a clear window in the forecast until noon tomorrow. So we plan to bug out first thing in the morning... if the forecast holds. All we need is about 4 hours to get from DRO to 84R. Oh yeah, that's what I'm takin' about, TAILWINDS! I had to pull back the throttle last time due to turbulence but was making 185 kts GS on 8.2 gph (125 ias). Hope y'all find similar (but without the turbulence). Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

These days that's not a bad deal. I see beat up ones on Ebay occasionally for $500+. I've been too scared to price them since mine are certainly serviceable. And yes, a main gear blowout will often put the edge down onto the pavement. That's one reason so many of them exhibit repairs. Been there, done that, and is the reason I replaced my Aero Classic Leak Guard tubes with Michelin AirStops. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Are those new, or rebuilt. They look great! If you don't mind... how much did they set you back? I could use new ones myself. I hope you never get a "moving flat tire". Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Seems weird to me when Albuquerque hands you off to Denver Center heading in to DRO. I don't think they ever see you on the screen. Did y'all make it up to Wolf Creek Paul? Wish I was there. Last February I had to bug out early from DRO for an approaching storm and in consecutive days following my departure they recorded 70" of snow at the airport. Glad I left when I did. Have fun! Greetings, and in the market for a Mooney!

No hangar?!! Where do you propose that the hangar fairies work/sleep at night? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Paul is likely right about the "process" but I might be able to glean some more info along the way. I'm fortunate that my plane shares hangar space with their CEO's Diamond DA40 in Houston on occasion and it's not uncommon to bump into Tyson there. He's very nice and happy to talk about Foreflight though he certainly doesn't give up secrets. Still, when I've asked him about future updates in the past I could get a feel for what might be coming soon. He's not a personal friend whom I would "call", but if I see him around I'll certainly ask him when we're going to see SV on our phones. And hopefully his response will give some indication.

I checked mine today for your reference and found that at ~1,000 rpm vacuum was decent but dropped off quickly at ~900 rpm (see photos). My vac pump is a Rapco showing good life on the vanes (thru the inspection port).

Commonly called an adel clamp in avaition. The kind shown/referenced here has a small elastomer "spike" (for lack of a better word) that "grips" whatever is being held in place. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/ms21919clampswch.php They come in all different sizes.

FYI, Foreflight was cordial in their prompt reply to our poll results. 9 of 20 respondents said they'd like to have Foreflight SV on their iPhones. I may post a similar poll on BeechTalk if I can find the time. Thanks for the great feedback! I've added your suggestions to the system we consult when planning new updates to the app. Let us know if there is anything else we can do for you. Janessa Mehalko Pilot Support Team ForeFlight, LLC

It looks like you've got another 300' of taxiway beyond the turn-off that simply dead-ends. If you had tundra tires you could just cut across when landing a bit long. FWIW, my J's brakes will lock up on a quick turn-off if I don't retract the flaps. Depending on who's flying with me I've been chastised for either "retracting" or "not retracting" on the roll-out. I knocked out my night currency last night and made the mid-field turn off every time following the PAPI down so I figure mine are working well enough.

At least you and I aren't flying a (insert brand/type here).[emoji2] I'll take 180 mph over 120-150 mph any day! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

That's a fast J from what I've seen/heard. Maybe 160 for an average-type J?

Ahhhhhhhhh. The Mooney "Trifecta"! Speed, Economy, AND cheap maintenance. Well, I guess two out of three ain't bad. Sigh.

+1 for AOPA Insurance Services. My renewal starts this weekend and I switched from AIG to Global and saved $547 this year by making the switch. What's even crazier is that Avemco was $1,166 MORE than Global (more than double)! FWIW I'm relatively low-time @ ~600 hours with 400+ time in type with a Instrument Rating and no claims ever. Obviously Avemco doesn't want my business.

I just posted a poll in the "Misc. Aviation Talk" forum. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

This topic came up and it seems like many would like to have AI/SV functionality on their iPhones. I will pass the result on to Foreflight if enough people vote.

We likely need to start a campaign urging Foreflight to support SV on iPhones. They're usually quite responsive and the number of cool updates they continually release is impressive. I'll try to start a poll in the morning when I'm at the computer and if the results are favorable I'll pass them on to Foreflight. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
