I'll be very interested to see your results Paul. The numbers you're looking for would be awesome. I do know you have a sweet C. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Thanks for the clarification; that sounds right. You know we can't have the "C crowd" on here bragging about their superior fuel consumption AND speed.

So it was YOUR M20-J that earned the name 201. Wow!

I'm a bit confused now (which happens more than I like). You said you were doing a 4-5K' speed run burning 11.5 gph (which I assumed was ROP), but then you said you're still burning 10.5 gph at altitude running LOP. My fuel flow running LOP at 7-9K' is usually right at 9.0 gph (making 150 kts when light and a bit less when heavy). I'm just surprised your fuel flow only varies 1 gph between a high power setting and a LOP setting.

It's not tach error then. All our fuel flow readings are subject to the peculiarities of the specific installation so I suspect that's where the FF difference is. My k-factor setting may be just a bit different. Fuel consumed is easily within a gallon of what I pump back in but there is some minor variation. The only aerodynamic advantage I might possibly have is the lack of the belly strobe which really does hang out there on most planes. And weight matters too; I'm light and with all my gear I only add 185# or so to the 45 gallons of fuel I was carrying on this test flight (making my total weight at ~2,195# or 545# below gross).

That's really close to what I was seeing (154 kts) at 2,400 rpm on my electronic tach. Your fuel flow is also lower than mine at 4,500' WOT and 2,500 rpm. Maybe you were running a little leaner than me or perhaps you have a little mechanical tach error? Still, 150+ kts @ 11.5 gph would make any Arrow or Cessna RG owner green with envy!
  7. If you're not carrying two ipads then I assume you're still carrying paper charts and approach plates as a backup? Backup iPads are cheap. I just sold a pristine iPad mini 1st generation on Ebay last night for $180. It also made a great independent SV display device.
  8. I'm with you; I'd love to have Foreflight w/ SV on my phone. The 6Plus is almost as big as the mini but doesn't have it. You can still get the backup AI/AHRS using the Stratus app but without ground reference. I've suggested to Foreflight that they cut the SV display to only 1/3 screen on the ipad (in portrait view) as that would help a lot but so far that's not an option. If enough people ask for it perhaps they'd offer that option. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  9. As requested I'm posting a few pics of the ipad air and mini for reference. I mount the air with a medium length arm "under" the yoke to avoid blocking the panel view. The mini has a short arm "over" the yoke making it easier to get in and out of the plane (no blockage issue on right). Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Loogie's numbers are similar to mine. Today I ran a N E S W track at 4,500 msl, 75F ROP, 25+", 2,500 rpm averaging 157.25 kts. Fuel flow at that setting was 12.3-12.5 gph on the JPI. When I stepped up the power a bit to 100F ROP and 2,600 rpm the average speed increased to 159.5 kts with FF increasing to the low 13s. Even at this higher power setting the highest CHT was 374F (OAT 57F). I typically run 15-30F LOP at 150 kts. My '78 J is stock w/ 550 TSMO. I have the fixed step and a towel-bar antenna on the tail but no draggy belly strobe. Keep looking and you'll get your speeds back in line. And please let us know what does the trick. 11. I have the Garmin Obstacle Database programmer that I provide to Mooneyspacers for a small fee as a loaner if you're interested. I'm just trying to slowly recoup my costs on the unit while giving the community a resource for updating their avionics with current data. Let me know if you're interested.
  12. I'd go broke just replacing the shock disks alone! I counted FOURTEEN total. Must be smoooooth in the air AND on the ground![emoji2] Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  13. Just making light of severe clear that we haven't seen for a while. There will be no scud running mañana. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  14. Is the lunch fly-in still on? The weather's looking pretty "iffy". I may try to meet up at T35 to meet some of the Austin crew if the scud run doesn't force me too low. If seating's not available no big deal; I'm just looking for an excuse to warm up the oil. It all hinges on whether I can postpone the outdoor Christmas decorating 'til Sunday. Working on that.
  15. And in this case I firmly believe the feds got it right. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  16. Weird, but highly entertaining just the same. A comedy of errors indeed. I believe we all want to see success for both Mooney and Kerrville's restaurant proprietors. Let's hope it all gets worked out. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  17. Sure! But then we'd likely not be invited back anytime soon. Plus I'd have to fill up my smoke-oil tank.
  18. Now you've confused me (which seems to get easier each passing year). How does the full-sized iPad fit between the yoke horns better in the "landscape mode"? I prefer the landscape mode in foreflight when displaying the AHRS/AI screen but haven't had that work out for me on the yoke. And I also like the iPhone mounted near the panel (mine's on the center post just below the vertical card compass) but sadly I can't display the "synthetic vision" screen on an iPhone like you can on an iPad. On my last trip into Colorado I really liked having the SV display which I mounted on the right-seat yoke (iPad mini) turned towards me. A retina mini on the yoke like GSXR's setup looks pretty good but requires me to pull out the reading glasses just a little more often. Hell I'd put one of the new iPad Pro's on the yoke it I could find room for the 12.9" screen.
  19. Hmmmm. Might be able to grab a bite and still make it home in time for the SEC Championship game (Tide vs. Gators). Doesn't look like we can do an element landing as the runway's only 50' wide but perhaps some of the formation group could fly in together? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  20. If Dan's doesn't work out for you I saw this on Barnstormers this morning. http://www.barnstormers.com/ad_detail.php?ID=1060704 Titled "Cheapest M20E Anywhere"
  21. Older J's have the bulbous aluminum (2nd) door and the separate composite "trailing bumps" but not the 3rd door. There's a beat up one on Ebay right now (seen in this pic). A lot of them (including mine) have been repaired as they sit fairly low and can contact the ground with a flat tire, etc.
  22. I agree. If you're looking to measure the difference between pre and post do it in dense air with the highest cruise power. Maybe 5,000' WOT @ 2,500 rpm leaned to ~100 ROP. That should have you around 75% power and 160 kts true if clean. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  23. I like it. Enough to actually say so rather than just clicking the like button. [emoji106]

Regarding oil temp, how high is "very high"? Over 210? 225? I am not an A&P but I find a mis-timed cam more likely than a severely worn one on a 600 hour engine, particularly if the filter is clean. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

This may be too obvious but are you checking speed as measured by a GPS over an appropriate 3 or 4 leg course? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
