It's that time of year when we all come from work at night. Air is cool and smooth with clear skies! Great flying weather. San Diego Bay, Downtown and Point Loma. Mission Bay with San Clemente Island on the horizon and KMF amongst the lights in that darkness. It was an interesting night for aviation in San Diego. After landing after 4 other planes in front of me and plenty behind me, I cleared the runway and a lucky Bonaza pilot was warned his gear wasn't down by an observant pilot holding to takeoff. When I heard the chatter I looked back and he was feet from touching down on the runway. Then when getting ready to put my plane back in its hangar I heard someone call my name outside the fence in the complete darkness. When I walked over it was StinkBug and his mom. They where returning a twin that he was renting for his multi. He passed his multi check ride BTW, congratulations!!! He took his mom for a sunset ride around Catalina Island as his first passenger in a twin, cool! They got stuck at KMYF because of a nasty helicopter accident at KCRQ where he's based so they couldn't return in his Mooney. The good thing is we all had dinner at the local Mexican restruant then I drove them back to KCRQ.

It was the only plane that could take me away from my J.

Mooney pilots and owners in San Diego?
kmyfm20s replied to manoflamancha's topic in General Mooney Talk
Stinkbug has the most recent experience on a PPI from CrownAir with a Mooney he looked at. He could maybe tell you his experience. I know he felt like they did a thorough job. There is also an article floating around that discusses what should be specifically looked for. SB 208 A&B being complied with and corrosion in Mooney specific location. Do a search on Mooney space for more info on PPI there a lot of info out there. -
M20M Bravo Engine: Re-Man or New? Good FL Shop?
kmyfm20s replied to WorldWiseTrade's topic in Florida Mooney Flyers
I understand your point but after I had engine overhauled I wouldn't fly with my kids for the first 150 hours and even then it was in the back of my head that most castrophic engine failure happen with in the first 250 hours. I'm very involved with my engine health which makes a huge difference. I always review engine monitor data. I usually do all my oil changes myself but always cut filters, oil analysis, compression test and bore scope at each oil change and if all vitals are good I'm going longer than TBO. How much longer? Probably until the very first sign of a tend change. I will fly with greater ease after TBO with my kids than the first 250 hours on a new engine. -
Ouch!

I would look in the log books and see if its been maintained by CrownAir. If it has show the add to Bill in piston maintenance. I bet he would be able to give you a little history before you invested in a PPI. -

CrownAir does my annuals and would recommend them for a PPI and whatever else you need. I also use an independent guy based out of KSEE thats good and use him for non specific Mooney items. He is capable of anything but certain things I like being entered in the log books as being preformed by a MSC which CrownAir is. He also lets you do owner assisted repairs/maintenance which I do when time is permitting. We did a top overhaul together on my last J together, trouble shoot my conditioning on my S, installed a Reiff pre-heater, GAMI injectors things like that. I have considered doing every other annual with him. -

Stinkbug and I get together here and there. I'll let you know the next time we do. It would be fun to get more of use together it seems to be a growing crowd. -
I think Wednesday I should be able to do this:)

Better yet just hide a cookie back in there. Their arm would just get stuck holding in place.

What did you end up doing for heat?
-
17,900 in my J and my S, 2 people and outdoor gear both times. The J actually surprised me how well it did which I think was around 200 rpm at the end. The S with the 310stc still 500 fpm. My preferred cruising altitude in my S is between 12.5-14.5 and in my J it was 11.5-12.5. It seems like no matter what my S likes doing 173ktas so going higher gives me better economy.13gph LOP down low 10.4 gph at peak up high. I think it has something to do with the drag from the air conditioning scoops being more pronounced down low.

You probably have it and don't relize it. That what happened to me on my last plane. After the install it got zip tied up with all the other wires. I had to go back and adhere it. Look on the web site it clip inline just before the wires split off to the 2 heat pads.
-
If it the thermostatic sensor I would just turn the unit on. The indirect heat shouldn't be to hot for the JB Weld. The heat pads it's not recommended. When I put mine on the included epoxy was doughy enough I just made a ball around the sensor and pressed it into place. I then used blue tape to hold down the wires to prevent anything from moving it around.

JB Weld #8265 per instruction. http://www.reiffpreheat.com/Instructions-HotStrip.pdf
-
The 4 hour set time is the one. Those pads are hot! I touched one to make sure it worked before I installed it. I wasn't expecting how hot the 50W pads get and it put a nice blister on my finger. Make sure you can keep the JB Weld above 70F for the reaction to take place between the catalyst and base or it will stay doughy forever. The Rieff system works really well my oil temp was 135F after preheating when the OAT was 17F on a recent trip.

The heat pads and thermostat are adhered with JB Weld.

El Niño appears to be kicking in here in So. Cal. I did my second day of skiing yesterday day at Mammoth Mountian. This is the earliest skiing I have ever done. I departed KMYF in time to catch a beautiful sun rise. And home in time to catch my son bombing some touchdown passes! A day made possible by Mooney:)

I used Tim's aircraft engines in Long Beach. Very professional clean shop and the price was fair. They invited me to stop in while the engine is apart and spent a lot of time going over a showing me how the do everything. They are worth a call for sure. I just past 215 hours since my overhaul and all is good.
-
Don't discount a Ovation with the 310stc. I live in the "big mountians out west" territory and climb up to turbo levels and get similar to K performance up there. I fly between 6 offices and for as much flying as I do the simplicity and fuel economy of the NA engine really appealled to me. The reality is I don't need to fly that high very often but when I do I have the climb rate and speed to do it.

I bought mine though Top Gun for around $275. I'm sure you can order it any MSC. it has been very helpful.
