tvykruta Posted July 19, 2013 Report Posted July 19, 2013 I'm in process of purchasing my first Mooney, a 1977 M20J. It's a year out of annual so I need a good mechanic to inspect and annual it. The owner has been doing regular runups but not flying it for the past year, so the oil is probably in bad shape. since it hasn't had a chance to properly heat up (Lycoming says to never do this type of 'warm up' - they say once a month the engine must run for 1 hour, and taxi does not count). I'm flyling my skyhawk over today to go do a pre inspection and send some oil to avlab. The plane is based out of boston, and my home airfield is Linden, NJ (I live in Manhattan). Recommendations for mechanic, and general tips on how to buy a used Mooney would be highly appreciated. Quote
carusoam Posted July 19, 2013 Report Posted July 19, 2013 Look up 201er at linden... He has experience in 201s including one that sat... He may convince you to join NJMooney.com as well. Best regards, -a- Quote
dooleypster Posted July 19, 2013 Report Posted July 19, 2013 Jim Todd at AeroMechanical is at the KPOU (Dutchess County) Not an MSC, but very knowledgeable with Mooney.....does many per year....has done my 201 for the last 6 years. I recommend him highly. Quote
quik flite Posted July 20, 2013 Report Posted July 20, 2013 I would highly recommend an annual from a well known expert in the northeast Webers Mooney Service Center , Call Dorn and ask if he can help. You will be glad you did. 717 569 2691 1 Quote
orionflt Posted July 24, 2013 Report Posted July 24, 2013 Send the oil out for an analysis, you can talk to Blackstone labs and the will expedite the analysis to help you make your decision on the engine condition. As for the rest of the inspection I agree about getting some one who knows mooneys to inspect it, there is a mooney service center in robbinsville that has a good rep, I would defiantly make sure that the cost of the annual, ferry flight, and any airworthiness repairs are covered by the seller. You can set up an escrow account to cover that and once everything is good then you release the funds. If you haven't made any commitments to the airplane yet and would like someone to take a causery look I my be able to stop on my way to Maine this weekend and take a look for you, and if you have copies of the log books I can go thru them and let you know if I see any issues that you should be aware of. I would offer to help with the full inspection but I have too many other projects going on and can't really add another right now. Brian Quote
N601RX Posted July 24, 2013 Report Posted July 24, 2013 The only problem I see with the oil analysis is that it may not be very meaningful. It needs to be flown for several hrs and then checked. Quote
orionflt Posted July 24, 2013 Report Posted July 24, 2013 The analysis will do 2 things for you, first tell you if it is making too much of the wrong metal, especially since he has been doing ground runs and give you a base line once the aircraft gets back in the air. Brian Quote
bd32322 Posted July 29, 2013 Report Posted July 29, 2013 The mooney service center at norwood also did a good job of doing a pre-purchase inspection on a mooney I was interested in. Problem however is they charge by the hour instead of a fixed flat rate. I am based in KFIT (fitchburg, ma) and live close to boston. So if you need any help during the purchase process let me know (PM me) Quote
