flight2000 Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 Is there a tow bar made for the early Mooney's that dosen't slip out when try to jockey the aircraft around. Has any one ever modified one that extends all the way through so you can add a clip to it to keep it in place? Just looking for other options out there. Thanks, Brian Quote
ray Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 I have one that a friend made for me so I could pull my plane out to the taxiway, my driveway is stone and i did't want to start it in the stones so I had him make one that I could pull with my yard tractor( I know about the turning radius) This tow bar will not slip out if you like I will send photo's it't pretty clever. MooneyMitch Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 I have wrapped my tow bar with a couple layers of duct tape. That keeps it snug in the slot and it does not slip out. I no longer fall on my you know what! Quote
flight2000 Posted December 28, 2009 Author Report Posted December 28, 2009 Thanks for the feedback. Ray, please send pics as I have a friend that does welding and can create something that works. Thanks, Brian Quote
Piloto Posted December 28, 2009 Report Posted December 28, 2009 A simple solution to keep the towbar in place is to bend the pulling tube to a less than 90deg angle from the inserting pin tube. Set the inserting tube into a vice and heat the pulling tube while hammering on it to get an 85deg angle. After many pulls of use this angle widen causing it to slip out of the gear. I currently use the Robotow (www.robotow.com) and i am very pleased with it. If you are over 60 I strongly recommend it, no need to carry aspirins like when using the old towbar. José Quote
Gone Posted December 29, 2009 Report Posted December 29, 2009 Hi folks: The tow bar that came with C-FSWR was modified with a hole at the end of the actual bar - so that a pin could fit into the hole and keep the tow bar in place during manoeuving. It is attached to long section by a loop of skinny bungee cord. It has been further modified to strengthen the weld at the join of the two pieces of steel. I am attaching a rough sketch. Hope this helps Quote
