billy hellcat Posted November 7, 2024 Report Posted November 7, 2024 Hello, I am looking for the trim boot replacement. Its part #740156-003. Laser is out of stock currently. Any alternatives. Thanks Quote
PT20J Posted November 7, 2024 Report Posted November 7, 2024 Is that the one that covers the jack screw on the tail? I think some have fabricated replacements using SCEET ducting. 1 Quote

Any alternatives. Thanks As Skip says, a short section of duct is sometimes used as the trim boot. But, I think the boot just makes it hard to clean, inspect, and lubricate the jackscrew. Unless you’re operating on grass/unimproved airport surfaces, you might consider not installing it. It should cleaned and lubed with new grease every annual whether there is a boot installed or not. Looking at the ‘68 IPC (Manual 205), the trim boot isn’t shown. Did Mooney dispense with it for a time? The previous year IPC (‘65-‘67) clearly shows the trim boot (duct) as pn 740087-3. LASAR also lists this pn… did they this one in stock? Quote
Kelpro999 Posted November 7, 2024 Report Posted November 7, 2024 I used sceet and formed it rectangular with fluting pliers to mimic OE and fit the locating plate. 1 Quote

My plane didn't have one when I bought it so I bought the boot, never put it on. My AP/IA mentions it each annual, but it's still just sitting on the shelf. 2 Quote
CaptainRamius Posted December 31, 2024 Report Posted December 31, 2024 My 65 M20C needs one. The last annual (my first) I inspected it and it's about 80-85% but I'd like to replace it. No one said if LASAR could put you on a wait list. Even though I did this annual next May I intend to take it to a Mooney Service Center. I'd like to have this put to give to them to replace. Looks like a major fix. Supporting the tail. QUESTION: Is it legal for us to simply 'manufacture' one or does it need to be an 'official' 'FAA approved' Mooney duct. If not I could make one? Is round legal or does it need to be rectangular? Skates97 if you still have the one from LASAR, you wish to part with it? Quote
DCarlton Posted December 31, 2024 Report Posted December 31, 2024 Dumb question. How do you throughly clean, inspect and lubricate the screw if it has the boot in the way? I don't think my plane has had a boot in the 20 years I've owned it. Will check during the next annual. I think I'd rather keep it clean and lubricated and easy to access and inspect. 3 Quote

On mine I run the tail to full up trim and the boot can then be displaced enough to get grease on the jack screw. I think the boot on mine is original. 1 Quote

Let me look for it later this week when I'm at the hangar, pretty sure I know where it is, but things tend to not be where I thought I left them... Quote
Justin Schmidt Posted Wednesday at 03:58 AM Report Posted Wednesday at 03:58 AM Might have seen one at BAS a bit ago Quote
Jsno Posted Wednesday at 03:08 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 03:08 PM I think this would just be a minor alteration signed off in the log book to fabricate it from sceet. If it fails it will not affect airworthiness. Quote
OneSaltyItalian Posted Wednesday at 06:48 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 06:48 PM I also used sceet... The jack trim boot is made from 'unobtanium' as @KSMooniac so lovingly puts it. Everything I saw on here and what my IA recommended was to still cover it up, but we used buttons (more or less) to be able to remove it every annual to clean and lubricate it. Kind of worked out great! 1 Quote
