Because the models that are capable of cell also have a separate gps. Some models do have a separate gps, but all the cell capable ones have it. I have an ipad mini without gps and it only provides position when connected to the internet or an external gps in the airplane. airplane mode doesn’t disable gps reception. No, you don't get cell service without a sim card. But you will get GPS without a sim card, as that has no cell requirement. However, you will not get last minute updates with things like TFRs until you cell or use your phone as a wifi hotspot. Quote

I get the connection between Cellular and GPS. I tried this last night. iPad in Airplane Mode, and when I start ForeFlight, it immediately complains that it has no connection to the outside world. I click "OK" and the map shows my "current position". I'll test this later this morning, but I suspect that it's showing me my last known position, and it won't change as I drive. Film at eleven. I does not improve location "availability" or "accuracy". you may be thinking of "skyhook" which uses the known location of WiFi networks to improve positioning 1 Quote
mikey757 Posted April 26, 2023 Author Report Posted April 26, 2023 OK, learning a lot on here. I've confirmed that I unfortunately bought an I-pad with no GPS. So, I've been looking at external bluetooth receivers. Stratus has one with ADSB "IN" also, albeit a lot more money. So wouldn't that be a better choice to get traffic, weather etc. rather than just the GPS receiver? The aircraft already has a Garmin Aera 560 but that doesn't have bluetooth if my research is correct. Quote
rbp Posted April 26, 2023 Report Posted April 26, 2023 used to be you could get a Bad Elf GPS with a lightening connector. don't think they sell them anymore, in favor of their BT versions I still have a bad elf GPS with the old 30-pin connector. bought a lightening adapter, and it works fine on my iPhone 14. maybe you can find one on Ebay? Pinecone Posted April 26, 2023 Report Posted April 26, 2023 I would get one of the Stratus/Sentry/etc solutions. GPS, plus ADSB In and other things also. Quote
