BillC Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 FYI: For those looking for a Hoskins 701295-3B strobe power supply, there are three for sale on ebay. He's asking 100.00 each. They are yellow tagged. Item number: 320838578584 Quote
jetdriven Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 Related topic: We have the original Hoskins strobe on our left wing, and a Whelen on the right. They dont match, and the Hoskins flashes once while the Whelen goes 3 times. Anyways, our Hoskins tube is going bad, the ends are getting dark. Does anyone know how to substitute a Whelen or some other flash tube in the Hoskins wingtip to keep it going? Quote
Vref Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 Mine are hoskins also still working fine (holding wood)..but can't they be supplied through aircraft spruce..? http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/replaceflashtubes.php rgds Luc Quote
KSMooniac Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 Maxwell managed to wire in some Whelen tubes to my Hoskins power supplies a couple of years ago after altering the wiring harness/plug interface on the light side. Working fine so far, but I hope we have a "modern" solution sometime in the near future along the lines of a nice LED set. Quote
jetdriven Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 The strobe has 3 wires. i didnt look too good at it, but it looks like Hoskins is red-yellow-black (sometimes?) while Whelen is red-white-black. Red=Anode, White=trigger, Black=ground (cathode) on both units. My A&P said you had to swap two wires in the connector, i think. Anyways, looking for info. Quote

jetdriven Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 Ok se we know the red-white-black on the connecotor goes to the strobe tube. What do the red-black-yellow wires go to ? Quote

jetdriven Posted February 8, 2012 Report Posted February 8, 2012 From the Mooney electrical schemtaics, M20Js SN 24-764 at least through -1418, that yellow wire is a trigger or sync wire to the other strobe power supply. I wonder if I have that wire, and if I can hook it to my Whelen power supply? Quote
testwest Posted February 10, 2012 Report Posted February 10, 2012 So, Jet, you are correct, the yellow wire coming from the Hoskins power supply is a synchronization signal. Unfortunately, the earlier Whelen A490 power supplies can't be synch'ed to a Hoskins....or even each other. There are version of the 490 that have a snych capability, but they are 4 amps each, and your strobe cb switch is 10 amps, so three power supplies may pop the switch. Quote
testwest Posted February 10, 2012 Report Posted February 10, 2012 jetdriven wrote: "Does anyone know how to substitute a Whelen or some other flash tube in the Hoskins wingtip to keep it going?" I do. And so does Whelen, here: http://www.whelen.com/install/137/13706.pdf Assuming a Whelen flash tube will physically fit the nav light assembly on the wing tip, you will need to swap the lines in the Molex connector attached to the flash tube. Hoskins and Whelen strobe power supplies use the exact same 3-pin Molex connector to connect flash tubes to power supplies, but they do not use the same pin out. Hoskins goes anode(red-labeled B+ on the supply) - trigger(white) - ground(black) and Whelen goes anode (red) - ground (black) - trigger (white). So, buy a new Whelen flash tube. Make sure it fits in the wing tip assembly. Then, look at the three-pin Molex connector attached to the Whelen flash tube, and get a Molex pin extraction tool (GC/Waldron, .093" extraction tool p/n W-HT-2038-P, Radio Shack, Fry's or online). Leave the red wire where it is, push out the black and white wires from the connector using the Molex extraction tool, and snap the wires back into the opposite holes, so you have red-white-black. Plug in the flash tube to your Hoskins power supply in the matching Molex receptacle on the black box, and you are done! Quote
rangermb Posted February 19, 2012 Report Posted February 19, 2012 Ok, so it looks like I'm joining the "my strobe don't work" club. The tube is pretty blacked up. I'm not sure if I have a Hoskins or Whelen supply. at this point I'm guessing that it is a Hoskins because I can't find a record of a replaceemnt in the aircraft records and the strobe, when it worked, was a single flash pattern. I haven't opened up the plate to get ot the supply, but did pull the tube out and, of course, it has no markings on it. Has anyone had any luck with Aircraft Spruce replacing these? Mike N201JV Quote
jetdriven Posted February 20, 2012 Report Posted February 20, 2012 Mike, pull the power supply and look at it. I bet you are right. Whalen has directions you switch the black and white wires in the connector To use a Whelen tube as testwest says to. Quote
