The cable is just a steel wire inside the sheath, but the indicator end is likely a clear plastic piece with a black end, if it is like the earlier ones I'm familiar with. Does that sound right?

If the plastic piece is indeed broken, you might have to glue it back together or fabricate a replacement. It is very delicate! If the steel wire broke, you can source that from just about anywhere and just feed it through the sheath from the flap actuator end. You can rig it in the flaps-up position, and check it through the full travel.

My indicator (plastic piece) fell off the cable. Greg at Advanced (MSC at KTTD) was able to glue it back on.  Requires removing the plastic housing

The generic name for that type of cable is Bowden cable. Search for that and you should find lots of sources.

Exactly, just replace with the same diameter.
