omega708 Posted December 24, 2011 Report Posted December 24, 2011 I recently purchased a '67 M20C and love it so far. I've noticed however, that the air scoop for the pilots vent window is positioned to far aft so that it barely pulls in any air during taxi. This obviously isn't a huge problem right now, but I would like to correct the issue before spring / summer. What is the best way to remove and re-position the air scoop without damaging the window? Thanks! Quote
gregwatts Posted December 24, 2011 Report Posted December 24, 2011 It should just be a narrow adhesive strip. Carefully peel it off and use some "Goo Gone" to clean off the extra adhesive. Quote
omega708 Posted December 24, 2011 Author Report Posted December 24, 2011 It appears to be attached by heavy duty double sided tape. Whatever was used seems to be doing a great job of keeping the scoop in place because it doesn't want to budge. I don't mind working on it a bit, I just didn't want to damage the window. Quote
garytex Posted December 25, 2011 Report Posted December 25, 2011 I need to put one of those scoops in. Summer in Texas in a Mooney does seem a little threatening, doesn't it. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted December 25, 2011 Report Posted December 25, 2011 I replaced the tape six months ago (with two sided tape from hardware store) This tape was stronger than OEM. I just removed while replacing windows...Steady pressure with finger(s) at corner got mine to break free. This should NOT cause any breakage on plexi. Replace tape at installation for a nice grip. The scoops are wonderful in the summer while in taxi. A "how did I survive without it" item... Quote
jwilkins Posted December 25, 2011 Report Posted December 25, 2011 If you have a hard time peeling off the Kool Scoop you can try an old sign installers trick; use piece of piano wire (thin safety wire might work, too) to 'saw' through the foam tape. Be really careful using chemicals such as Goo-be-Gone on the acrylic windows. With patience I've used hand lotion to soften the adhesive and eventaly rub it off by hand without window damage. I really like my Kool Scoop. One of the first things I did for the K as to add it. I don't understand why there are any planes without one; reasonably priced, works great, not in the way when folded back. I have no relationship with the manufacturer; just really like the Scoop. The best price I found on the Kool Scoop was at www.pilotjunk.com. Jim Quote
DanM20C Posted December 29, 2011 Report Posted December 29, 2011 This is a good thread, as my wife gave me a Kool Scoop for Christmas. I was going to ask if anyone found it intrusive when in the stowed position, Jim says it isn't. How about the rest of you? I'm broad in the shoulders and was worried about the space it would take up. I haven’t brought it out to the airplane yet, maybe it will be fine. Dan Quote
Ned Gravel Posted December 29, 2011 Report Posted December 29, 2011 Dan: Cheapest air conditioning unit you will ever install. Works great even for those of us with "broader" physiques. Quote
Shadrach Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 I would use a plastic putty knife or a kitchen bowl scraper to seperate the scoop from the widow. http://www.mpbs.com/imageViewer.jsp?product=bowl-scraper http://www.rynotools.com/1.5-plastic-putty-knife-546 Quote
