Hello everyone, looking for a Mooney Instructor.  I'm a student pilot who just bought a 1964 Mooney 20E,  I'm hangered at Mesquite Airport, Mesquite Texas.  I have been training on a 172 but would like to train in my own airplane.  Anyone know of a Instructor around the area that could help me out?

Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your purchase. Please post some pictures, keep us updated on your progress. Lots and lots of knowledge to be found on this forum, and please add your own if you wish.

There is a thread on this sight, can not quite remember the title or who started it, that has a list of known Mooney instructors. Do a search for that.

Also, @gsxrpilot has a map that can help out.

good luck

David

The 172 to a M20E is a pretty big jump! I would like to hear some of the backstory in your choice and purchase of that airplane.

I am down in the Houston area, CFII, though i am fairly new to mooney flying so i dont have a ton of experience on all the super in depth stuff, but the airplane is still an airplane. I do know there are 2 club within the dallas area that have a M20C and M20F, which you may be able to ask if their CFI's would be able to help you out with learning the plane.

That said, if you are a student pilot, you're going to have a longer, possibly harder, time getting you license in the M20. Its just a lot more aircraft than a 172, even if it doesnt seem like it. Either way, best of luck, and would love to see some pictures!

Welcome aboard James…

There are plenty of people that have trained in their Mooney…

There are plenty of threads why most people have avoided primary training in their Mooney… until a specific skill has been acquired…

Primary training in a Mooney can be done, it just isn’t the fastest way to get to the next level… :)

For Mooney flight instructors… Many have listed themselves here… link below…

Another resource for Mooney CFIIs is found in the MooneyFlyer…

Best regards,

I trained in Piper Warrior till I soled then transitioned to M20 MSE. It was difficult to find an instructor that had many hours in Mooney. They were technically qualified for complex planes but knew squat about Mooney.

May want to get your certificate as you may need to fly to your instructor. That’s what I needed to do to get Instrument rating. It was good to get extra time in.

I hopped in with guys not that familiar with Mooney and went thru couple that did not know the plane much which was not so good.

If I did it over I would get my license in piper or 172 then get few rides with Instructor familiar with Mooney.

A few hours with an experienced Mooney owner pilot, instructor or not, will help you bunches with transition speeds for takeoff, descent, landing and stopping bounce or hop it will do if you put her down before she’s ready to quit flying. My instructor taught me to pull back on yoke to keep nose wheel off after bounce or just land again if to high.

There are old pilots and bold pilots but no old bold pilots.

I had the same experience.  I did my insurance checkout hours with a non-Mooney instructor and he caused all sorts of issues (including almost a landing overrun) which made me afraid to land on a short runway.  It was more harmful than helpful.

I couldn't agree more.  After the initial experience I flew with @donkaye for a few hours and he taught me more in those few hours than I had learned in my previous 300 hours of flying including all my instruction.  After the first hour or two, I was comfortable on speed control and no longer had any fear of landings.

As always, it depends on the instructor. There are definitely advantages to training with a type-specific instructor, but good instructors who have type experience without necessarily specializing, can be very effective in transitions because they can translate what you already know into the differences for that model.

I found that Mooneyspace was a good resource in lieu of a type specific instructor. I got my initial insurance requirements taken care of that way, as it is impossible to find anyone with Mooney experience, much less an FI that really knows the M20K. I should do a FI...

+1 go to the US… get your CFI….   :)

We have factories catering to this type of training…

Of course you end up with an FAA rating… would that be helpful in Poland?

There are a number of Mooney-specific CFI around.  Not nearly as many as, say, experts in the 172.  Yes, do get your CFI and hang out your shingle as a K expert.

On a N-reg, certainly. But first things first, the IR, from the FAA.

Not over here in Poland. Simply not many Mooneys around. And I dare not call myself an expert, by no means, many more hours to get there. But I'm working on it ;)
