This is most likely to occur around remote airports that are not in range of radar coverage at the pattern altitude. In this case there can be a bunch of airplanes buzzing around that will not be seen other than visually.

Since you’re timing this right and you might want to Stand by for the Dynon skyview suite STC.   From what you described, it sounds like a either a gtn 650 or a slide in replacement IFD and a skyview may solve all your needs.
