Ness Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 Hello everyone. I'm relatively new to this site as I signed up about 8 months ago, but have not posted or actually used it yet. I am a new pilot as of January 2016 and purchased a M20J 201 in February. I have put in excess of 100 hours on her since then with no problems until last weekend. After activating the electric fuel pump I noticed the fuel pressure gauge did not come alive, but I could hear the pump grinding away. After a few more attempts with the same result I turned the engine over and the fuel pump gauge did come alive. At this point I and another pilot who was in the cockpit with me deducted the electric fuel pump must be bad. We have since learned the fuel pump is a Dukes, model 4140-00-19A and that it was overhauled by CJ Aviation, INC in September of 2012. Does it sound right that a fuel pump would go bad that soon after overhaul or could it be something else and the fuel pump really isn't bad? If it is bad how does a Dukes pump compare to a Weldon pump? I hope this post is in the proper place. If not I apologize in advance. Quote
Piloto Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 Throttle and mixture should be open (full forward) to get a pressure reading. I just replaced mine three months ago. It was the original 1982 pump. The pump pressure was not hitting the green arc but sounded healthy. The new one hits the upper end of the green arc and sounds like the old one. The pump pressure is most critical when trying to start the engine in cold weather. I got my new one through Aircraft Spruce and sent the old one for a $400 credit. José Quote
Bob - S50 Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 When the electric boost pump failed in our '78 J, we found the least expensive option was to have it overhauled at Aeromotors LLC in Wisconsin. Here is their website: Aeromotors LLC We had ours overhauled maybe 2 years ago and it has worked with no problems. Quote
bonal Posted November 13, 2016 Report Posted November 13, 2016 Welcome Ness, sounds like what your describing is a problem with the instrument if it's behaving like ours. In winter cold my pump is making good pressure but it takes a few moments for the gauge to wake up. Quote
Ness Posted April 22, 2019 Author Report Posted April 22, 2019 Thank you all for your responses and I sincerely apologize for not saying so earlier. I did not set response notification and did not know anyone had responded. It turned out the backup electric fuel pump was bad. I purchased a new/different brand and it has been running nicely since.
