my factory unit had died, and in looking around here for replacement options I see two mentioned, the Hoskins FT-101 and the flowscan 201. Any input as to which will work? I saw reference to the hoskins no longer being available.

Consider two parts to this equation...  sensor and display.

I have the FT101 in my ship...

If something were to go wrong, I would suspect that dirt in the sensor could be giving it challenges. They are easy enough to get pulled, cleaned and replaced...

An odd failure comes from air entering the fuel line at the selector valve...

Or did your panel instrument display fail?

Fix It for the sale, go Modern JPI for a fully integrated display FL, FF, integrated with your GPS for fuel to the airport, in your next plane...?

Next ship is getting a jpi 900 and Aspen glass,  this one is the factory fuel flow that reads out on the ff/mp gauge, it's been intermittent and it's time to just replace the transducer I think. The analog panel gauge is actually only a year or three old, so we're pretty sure it's the transducer, I just can't read what it is. Will the ft101 transducer work on the factory readout?

Most transducers are just wave outputs generated by a magnet in the paddle wheel.  Each time the magnet goes around it gets counted.  Each count is calculated as a set amount of volume that has passed through.  This is made accurate by adjusting that volume.  The adjustment is called the K-factor.

Your sensor will have a model number on it.  Each panel instrument manufacturer will tell you what sensors are compatible with it...

See if you can determine which model numbers you have.  Sensor model and FT101 version if there is one.... See if you can find an FT101 install manual...

Presuming your plane is like mine, it uses a Floscan transducer with the Hoskins (I think) read-out. The biggest problem is the Floscan transducer looks EXACTLY like a regular Floscan transducer, but it was modified at the manufacturer to mate up to the indicator in the plane. If you are willing to pay Mooney or one of the MSCs the $600+ for a new one, all is good. But if you find an "ordinary' Floscan transducer at a more reasonable price, it will only read about 1/3 the actual fuel flow. (Ask me how I know). At this point, I decided to update my JPI to read fuel flow, and it (at least theoretically) will read the transducer properly. I should have my plane back in a few days, with that fix in place.

The Hoskins FT-101 unit is adjustable for different transducers. It has toggle switches located internally that can accept low, medium and high transducer K factors. my understanding is the K model 231 uses an M which should be stamped on the transducer. It is true that the proper replacement was about $600 from instrument tech in Addison, TX. The Hoskins unit does not allow you to type in a specific K favor but rather a range of K factors which will get you close enough. Mine is very accurate.

Here is the FT-101 documentation on setting the K-Factor, which is the easy part. The tough part is getting the unit out of the panel.

And in response to Don's reply  "At this point, I decided to update my JPI to read fuel flow, and it (at least theoretically) will read the transducer properly. I should have my plane back in a few days, with that fix in place". We added fuel flow to the JPI a few years ago and the accuracy is to within ounces. Of course it all depends on how much fuel is used vs loaded during the next top off, but my experience has been that she's never taken on more than a gallon more than the JPI said was used.

The point here being that we're selling the plane. I just want to replace the factory transducer with another compatible with the factory instrument

LASAR would have to get it from mooney, mooney wants only $1500 for one. Hah.

It's cheaper to go with something like this

I'll keep digging.

Edit: it's definitely a floscan 201, clearly marked. Now to figure out A, B, or C

I had in my hands one of the factory ones and one of the "others", and they are identically marked.

thanks, I figured while I was there I'd try cleaning it since it cost next to nothing.

It should be the 201(B) same thing as 201(M) from what I know ... I went through this myself and this is what I found after calling flo scan and JPI and Dugosh

Thanks, that helps a bunch. I don't understand why it's so convoluted. Ours has an M scratched on the case. I thought that might have been done at Mooney or something. It must be a 201m
