Good day all.. Dont know if this is the right column but I need help/ info on Oshkosh. I've phoned mooney international for last 3weeks without any result or any one to phone me back. Left more than few messages for a call back. No luck. We are flying into KOSH on the Thursday( not part of the formation flying) I want to know if MAPA members can use the Mooney site to camp if we show up on Thursday? Any help will be great or on how I can get ahold of Mooney themselve.

Thank you

The Mooney Caravan arrives into Oshkosh on Saturday before the show opens and is assigned a camping area when they land as are all planes. Mooney International has nothing to do with the Caravans camping area nor does MAPA have anything to do with the Mooney Caravan or Mooney International. You may get lucky and get parked in a spot vacated by one of those that participated in the Caravan and left prior to your arrival, but your chances of that are small. Perhaps there is a way to get directed to the area where the Mooney Caravan is camping if there is an early vacancy, and perhaps someone (DYL got your ears on??) with the Caravan can make a suggestion. Welcome to OSH and the US. I hope your visit and experience is better than you anticipate!

The only way to ensure a parking/camping spot with the Mooney Caravan, is to arrive with the Caravan in the formation arrival.  In fact, this is the whole purpose of the formation arrival.  There is no other way to ensure a specific parking space or camping space on the grounds.

Regardless of where you camp, you're welcome to come visit and hang out with us in the Caravan camping area. You'll see us in the North 40 with the big Mooney tent and flags flying.

The only way to park/camp with the Caravan is to arrive with the Caravan. Those aren't our rules, it's the AirVenture rules.

Just a correction for Mike: The Mooney Caravan arrives on Sunday, not Saturday.

There shall be a good number of empty spots by Thursday near the Mooney tent. If you know your way around it is always possible to tell the Marshaller you have to taxi to a specific location on the camping site.

One suggestion: Write on a large enough sign something like "MOONEY CARAVAN CAMPING" and show it to the marshallers.

I would try this...

Why would you think Mooney has any say over parking at AirVenture? Are you a member of EAA? It's their party. You must be an EAA member to camp.

Aircraft Camping

Flying in to Oshkosh and pitching a tent under the wing of your airplane is perhaps the ultimate way to experience AirVenture.

You must be an EAA member to camp in an aircraft camping area. No pre-registration is necessary and airplane campsites are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis (three-day minimum).

Aircraft camping areas on the EAA AirVenture grounds are segmented into two categories:

  • General aircraft camping area (commonly known as the “North 40”)
  • Showplane camping (Vintage, Homebuilt, Ultralight, Rotorcraft and Seaplane categories)

Shower facilities, free public Wi-Fi, on-site transportation, and access to food and supplies are available.

Cost: $27 per day

EAA no longer allows directed parking.  They had too many instances of people trying to force themselves close to the gate/bathrooms/etc.  I think they started this policy two or three years ago.  I watched last year someone disregard the marshaller and he received a stern warning.  Point is they might direct you to that area but don't try to force the issue.

I think Yves is discussing the communication method with the marshallers.  The sign for GAC is a standard.  A sign for Mooney Caravan would be a request.

Bringing an EAA member along is a good idea.  Split some costs and gain entrance to the party....

Best regards,

Try giving EAA Airventure a call http://www.eaa.org/en/eaa/about-eaa/contact-us and ask. From what I've seen it might be difficult because of the crowded area. It is much easier for the marshals to direct all new campers to a clean area so you can just taxi in and set up. A couple of things to prepare for:

1. Study the arrival procedure, it's not quite like any other arrival you'll experience. Do you know what a conga line is? You will.

2. Practice slow flight in your K model. Hope you don't get behind a J-3 Cub or Taylorcraft.

3. Approach speed is critical, Airventure lands on 3 spots on 9/27  6,179ft. Your not going to want to float.

4. Take Carusoam's advice and bring or become a EAA member, before. Airventure tickets are much cheaper.

Have a great time.

If you can find someone that is going with the caravan and you can pre-arrange a campsite split, that spot can be reserved for you when you arrive.  I have split a campsite in the vintage area for the last two years.  (The day I arrived was the day he left, and I was able to park right next to my buddy for the rest of the week.  I think I came on a wednesday.  Also, it is better to arrive before the air show and not after.  They land a lot of planes and it is harder to see the planes at night.  It literally looks like a military dog fight with how many airplanes are up there.  And when they say to rock your wings, well I think more than one plane does it, so make sure you know where you are before.
