Brian Scranton Posted March 24, 2016 Report Posted March 24, 2016 Dudes (and dudettes)...flying the family to KMWL to drop off the Mooney for a little Century Autopilot work. Then off to DFW for some spring break action. Storms' a comin' and want to get a head start this evening and make it over the mountains before the snowpocalypse. Has anyone ever flown into Dalhart, TX or Clayton, NM? Looking for some info on: FBO, Hotel, etc...then will finish up the trip to Mineral Wells in the am. THANKS!!! Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted March 24, 2016 Report Posted March 24, 2016 There is a good BBQ place near the airport in DHT. Never spent the night. Quote
The-sky-captain Posted March 25, 2016 Report Posted March 25, 2016 KDHT has a fantastic FBO restaurant. I've landed there a couple times on trips to Durango and it gets ripe in the heat due to the stockyards. Quote
RangerJim Posted March 25, 2016 Report Posted March 25, 2016 The DHT FBO is friendly and modern, provided me a courtesy car, and their food is indeed excellent, especially if you like fried okra. Try to get accommodations away from the railroad tracks if you can. This is a major rail junction and trains run all night long. I stayed at the Nursa Nickel (yep) Best Western in town and realized the score when the check in guy handed me a set of ear plugs. Friendly, clean, and convenient but the train noise broke my pick. Had a nice dinner at a steak house a mile or two from the motel that was popular with local families and railroad workers. The town was full of railroad construction workers when I passed through about 18 months ago and rooms were scarce. I don't know if that is still the case but you should book ahead just in case.
