I recently had a Lynx 9000 ADSB transponder installed and for ease of install I had it put in the right stack. I didn't like the reach since it is a touch screen and I didn't like the distance or viewing angle to see the traffic display. So last week I moved it to the center just above the IFD540. At the previous location the avionics guy used whatever paint was on hand for the single panel he had to make. While it was in the ballpark it was different and smooth/glossy. The factory stuff is textured and not glossy.

What I found was an exact match to the yokes and dang close to the factory panel color. I then got a similar color with texture for a base coat. In the pictures, the entire paint on the right stack is new as well as the top filler plate over the radios. I only textured the panel I built and then also painted the adjoining existing pieces (already textured) In the picture with radios off, the color looks different maybe because of the flash but compare to the yoke and also the little strip just left of the breakers. It "is" a little different but not noticeable in person unless looking for it. I hadn't realized until this project that the yokes and panel were slightly different shades. The black spot above the copilots yoke is a 1" Ram ball. I didn't get the ball with a base, I used the one with a 1/4" x 20 threaded stud into a good solid piece of new  angle in the rack behind the plate. So if I remove it, there is just a 1/4" hole. There is NO vibration on the iPad mini which was my goal. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out and the new transponder location.

Tony- Thanks for posting!  I am less than 2 months from completely re-doing all of my instrument panels and now have a better idea thanks to you.  Perfect timing.  Another win for MooneySpace!

Thanks! Looks great! That transponder looks sweet.

SEM makes a near perfect match as well. But rust oleum is easy to find.

My entire interior (except the black panel and eyebrow) is painted with SEM Almond. It's available at many auto parts stores. Find an independent body shop and ask them, they'll know the local paint shops. Not sure what was more difficult, taking it all out or putting it all back. Cleaning, repairing and painting was pretty simple. Just remember that the most important step in your paint job is surface preparation, it's gotta be clean clean clean! No fingerprints allowed . . . Whether you can see them or not.

Wonder if I could carefully pull the black plastic overlay off of my panel and make a new one from, say, cherry veneer? Then I wouldn't have to look at all of those screw heads holding the plastic on.

A cherry plane needs a cherry panel, right?

I was going to do that with my panel once some of the final adjustments are made...I was going to laser cut veneer and laser etch all placards directly on to it, then laminate it to the aluminum... I was also going to do this for interior panel accents with laser etched insignia and other details...  after much thought, I think I've decided against it in favor of just painting...  I've got bigger fish to fry for now   haha
