OR75 Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Anyone has a tip on how to repair a glareshield ? '77 J model. Mine is cracked behind the post (after the numerous times it has been been taken out) Any source for the same type of platic that could be used to make a patch ?? Thanks !!
Piloto Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Fiberglass resin works very well. You can get it at marine stores. If the gap is to big use the cloth to fill in. After the repair sand it off. The texture of the repaired area will not be the same as the whole glareshield but if you spray paint the whole piece with wrinkle black paint nobody can tell. José
OR75 Posted September 13, 2010 Author Report Posted September 13, 2010 With time (30+ years), the plastic has become more brittle and cracked while being taken out. There is no hole but it does not look good. I had in mind of cutting (straight line / square shape) the part that was cracked and replacing it.

jetdriven Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 it is ABS plastic same as the side panels, etc. the best way is to buy some ABC cement for pipes, its basically ABS and solvent. It glues the plastic together and with some fiberglass tape imbedded on the underside, as strong as one unit. You can also buy thin ABS sheet to rebuild the plastic. I just repaired mine from the previous owners' attempt at repairing it with epoxy and fiberglass tape.
RJBrown Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 SEM makes a whole line of plastic repair supplies. Check the website for a lot of interesting ways to fix plastic. Flexible Ure-Weld, SEM # 39406, is a 2 part material I used to fix mine. It works like epoxy but remains flexible when cured. Jet driven's idea does sound good maybe better than what I used. Definitely do not use epoxy or fiberglass resin as it is not flexible and just breaks because it is brittle.
