Just before I solo'd in '62 my instructor took me to the RADAR room at Oakland CA. In those days they used a flat (horizontal) screen with primary targets only and they pushed what were called 'boats" along each track next to a target signifying what flight it was.

I sat down to a console in the radar room in Oakland a few years ago as part of Operation Raincheck. The old Burroughs radar screens were still in use, probably the same ones from the time that you were there in 1962.

Yep that's what NY had in 70. I don't remember the primary targets tho and "boats", I was following a guy in a 182 from Norwalk CT going to Hartford.  He had no clue where he was.   I learned so much from that guy about IFR and I had just got my PP !

"Back-in-the-day", all those wonderful flight experiences were primarily enjoyed by the very wealthy. Average folk could only imagine. Well, guess what? The very wealthy still enjoy luxury beyond words when they fly, but you won't see it because they are on their Gulfstreams, Falcons, or BBJ's.

I watched three people (the only passengers) get off a 737 BBJ arriving from Germany, complaining/bitching they had been forced to take the BBJ instead of their faster G-5. After they left, I went aboard to take a peek.

Yes. Glamorous, indulgent, opulent air travel is alive and well....just not at the airlines. Only the little people ride the airlines.

The super wealthy, of course, fly Mooneys.

Michael Bloomberg is reported to fly his own Ovation.

We met him at an event while he was mayor. His Mooney was N504MB (a 50th birthday present for himself). We recall his saying it was a Bravo. He doesn't have it anymore. He flies his own helicopters (Agusta). He told us that his professional pilot knows not to touch the controls while he's flying. He probably doesn't fly the Falcon.
