Hector Posted October 18, 2014 Report Posted October 18, 2014 As most of you know the new iPhone 6 and 6 plus have a built in barometer sensor. I was curious just how good this sensor was. Quite frankly, I was not expecting much. So...yesterday I downloaded a free App called BARO. This app lets you set the local altimeter setting and it then displays your altitude and rate of clim/descent. This morning was just a beautiful day to fly in north Florida so I took the Mooney up. Listened to the ATIS and dialed in the local altimeter setting on both the airplane and iPhone App. I then climbed to 9500 feet while comparing my altimeter to the iPhone App. The iPhone App was very accurate!! I never saw a difference of more than 15 feet!! I think it's pretty darn neat that they can squeeze a small BARO sensor in a phone that appears to be just as accurate as my real altimeter. Another backup!! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD 2 Quote
ryoder Posted October 19, 2014 Report Posted October 19, 2014 I wonder how it compares to the barometer in the Garmin pilot watch? I have that watch and its barometer is pretty accurate too. Now someone should make a bluetooth wireless pito tube and the iPhone can become a dynon. Quote

BigTex Posted October 26, 2014 Report Posted October 26, 2014 It's about time. Most Android devices have had Baro sensors for years. Quote

Marauder Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Got rejected...wants IOS8? I'm not there yet. Best regards, -a- Go for it! Whatcha waiting for? IOS9? They are up to 8.1 already. Seems stable but does have some new features that I need to figure out how to turn off. Like have a cell phone call from my iPhone show up on my iPad! Quote
Ned Gravel Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 I thought it wanted only iPhone 6 and iPad (beyond my mini), but it works on both my iPad and my iPhone 4S. Quote
Houman Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 Strange, it doesn't work on my IPAD mini, it says no barometer available... Quote
BigTex Posted October 27, 2014 Report Posted October 27, 2014 I think the sensor is only one the iPhone 6. Quote

Hector Posted October 28, 2014 Author Report Posted October 28, 2014 I don't think the older phones have a barometer. You need to have an iPhone 6 or 6 plus, and I'm not sure the new mini and iPad Air have a barometer either (someone can look up the specs).. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Quote
Ned Gravel Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 Hector: you may be right. When I look at the app, it indicates that the barometer information comes from openweathermap.org, and not an instrument on the phone or iPad itself. The altitude comes from the GPS and the pressure altitude comes from the openweathermap.org reading. wishboneash Posted October 28, 2014 Report Posted October 28, 2014 For Android, try "Altimeter". Works very nicely with a settable altimeter setting and voice annunciation of altitude. Quote
