ArtisanAviation Posted March 27, 2014 Report Posted March 27, 2014 Hello. I am looking for a 1978-1980 M20J. Newer years are ok. Run out engines are ok but must have a 2 bladed prop. Also, a "vintage" instrument package would be a plus. We are looking for something preferably in the 70-80k price range. Thanks! Quote
MooneyBob Posted March 27, 2014 Report Posted March 27, 2014 I have 3 blades on my 1977 J. You got me scared a little with the "must have 2 blade". Anything wrong with the 3 blade prop? This is my first plane so I am just curious. Quote
KSMooniac Posted March 27, 2014 Report Posted March 27, 2014 They're just heavier, slower, more expensive and prone to vibration issues with a 4 cylinder engine. Other than that, nothing. Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk Quote
MooneyBob Posted March 28, 2014 Report Posted March 28, 2014 it came with the plane so it is what it is. But I really like the sexy look together with the polished spinner. But it's me. 1 Quote
ArtisanAviation Posted March 28, 2014 Author Report Posted March 28, 2014 Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you! It's just a preference of the gentleman I'm helping. He had one on a previous Mooney and just didn't care for it. 1 Quote
jrwilson Posted March 28, 2014 Report Posted March 28, 2014 I had the dynamic prop balance done for my 3 blade....smooth as can be. Pretty inexpensive too, I think it was less than $300 1 Quote

KSMooniac Posted March 28, 2014 Report Posted March 28, 2014 You can get it done all over... but it requires some equipment that might not be in every shop. It is a *very* good idea to get it done... lower vibration = longer life for just about everything bolted into an airplane...gyros, radios, exhaust system, etc. 1 Quote
jrwilson Posted March 28, 2014 Report Posted March 28, 2014 Yeah, anywhere that has the system for it. MooneyBob, you're right about the 3 blade looking cool... Mine came with it too and I like it; got the polished spinner also, which I think makes it not only look better, but go faster. Quote

I have polished my spinner last week with the California Custom product. Looks sweet. 1 Quote

Dynamically balancing y Hartzell in Piqua, OH. was unable to resolve the vibration of the new 3 blade they wanted to sell me for my F model in 2004. After a few months of me trying to get to like it, I had them build me a new 2 blade and take the 3 blade off. I have heard of some smooth 3 blade installs on I Lyc 360's, but I personally have never flown in one. Every (hartzell at least) 3 blade/360 combo I have flown in had vibrations. Most of the owners thought they were smooth, however. I understand the McCauley is better and the MT is very nice. Quote
