mooneyflyer Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 We are planning a CA-NH flight this summer. We need recommendations for good stop-overnights near Kansas City and near Cleveland. These are just spaced out for fuel. Looking for the usual... good fuel... nearby hotels... maybe a courtesy car... maybe something fun to do/see. Thanks in advance. Phil & Linda Quote
Amelia Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 Consider Coshocton, Ohio. (I40) for a charming, laid-back stop. Last I looked, they were very hospitable, have a courtesy car, nice hotels/b&bs nearby, rental cars good restaurants, and cheap-ish fuel. It's some 60 miles south of Cleveland, but there's a neat reconstructed 19th century canal village (Roscoe Village) with good restaurants and cute shops. It is just a short drive north to Holmes County, with lots of old-order Amish culture. (Don't bother landing at Holmes Co Airport, 10G, though- no transportation and fuel's too high.) If you'd rather see Cleveland, itself, BKL, Lakefront Airport has a nice runway along Lake Erie- sort of like Meigs used to be. If I recall, there's a modest landing fee, maybe a not-so-modest ramp fee, and rather high fuel price, but you can walk into downtown Cleveland for shopping, restaurants, entertainment, and such. (Me, I'd prefer Amish country and Coshocton's small town hospitality, but despite its reputation, Cleveland's got much to recommend it, if you like cities.) Quote

mooneyflyer Posted May 13, 2010 Author Report Posted May 13, 2010 Amelia: Just fantastic. You got my wife excited with this stopover, so it's a win-win. Thanks a million. George: AirNav is great for finding low fuel, but we also looking for a cool stopover. Amelia's info is priceless. All: Still need a place near Kansas City, although a good friend has suggested St. Joseph (KSTJ), so we'll check it out. Phil Quote
KSMooniac Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 Phil, I've been to several of the KC area airports but can't think of any that will hit all of your wish-list. 2 weeks ago I went to KC Downtown (KMKC) for an Angel Flight pickup and it was a very neat old airport right in the heart of the city. Exec Beech is a nice, high-priced FBO. I didn't take fuel, but I see from Airnav there is a city-owned SS pump but I'm not sure about the logistics of parking and/or getting ground transportation if you take the cheap SS fuel. The airport is very close to the cool parts of KC if you feel the need for a luxo-stop with a nice hotel, restaurants, etc. KGPH is NE of the metro-KC area and is also a very nice airport I visited on an Angel Flight last year. There is great BBQ within a 10-15 minute drive, but that is about all I can offer. Perhaps something else nearby is suitable for lodging. K81 is south of KC and a favorite stop for great BBQ right on the field and SS fuel, but they don't offer much more than that. I have no idea if there is any ground transportation available, but I'm sure there is an inexpensive hotel in town. Quote
rturbett Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 Consider SKY- if your up for spending an evening (or all day)at cedar point. lots of hotels nearby. A quick trip up to 3W2- put in bay- will let you see people really celebrating summer on the weekends. Daylight operations only. Rob Quote
Amelia Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 Here's a hearty second to Put-In-Bay, Ohio, just north of Sandusky. No place I know of quite like it. A lot of years ago, back when the 25-foot-wide runway sported a decided dogleg in the middle, we landed there one Friday evening, pitched a tent under the wing, hiked into town with our little ones, observed a wildly enthusiastic summer weekend bar scene, took a ferry boat over to the Lonz Winery on Middle Bass- now sadly gone, I understand, and drank truly regrettable Lake Erie wine with new friends until last call for the ferry home, as our children and theirs chased each other through the nearly empty bar. We were happy to find a golf cart going our way back to the airport, with just barely room for two more hangers-on, and their kids. No-night-ops, we learned after drifting off to sleep in our wee tent, did not apply to medevac choppers, of which there were several that night, with attendant spotlights and earthshaking clatter. Great weekend, though. It's DIFFERENT, that's for sure. Quote
flight2000 Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 KFLV (Sherman Army Airfield) is an option to the North of Kansas City. Nice little FBO and they normally have a courtesy car available, nothing special though. Enterprise will drop a car off if you'd rather rent something brand new. Fort Leavenworth is a great little base with tons of historical homes and buildings if that's what floats your boat. It's the oldest post this side of the Missisisippi. Lansing, KS has the better hotels, which is just South of Leavenworth. http://garrison.leavenworth.army.mil/sites/about/history.asp This is a joint use airport with the military, but don't let that scare you. We don't have any military aircraft based here anyway. It's mostly used for VIP visits. No fees as far as I know. Gas is $4.95 right now and it's a self-serve pump. Brian Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 I just got back yesterday from a trip from Phoenix to Indianapolis. I stopped at Neosho, MO where they have cheap gas and courtesy cars (Crown vic with spotlight) that they will let you use over night. I drove up to Joplin, MO to spend the night. it is only about 8 miles north. I liked that town it had everything i needed. Quote
