  1. Quote: N4352H Your old stuff can be reskinned and it will just be a pain in the butt....unless you really luck out. It's hard to get it right w/o factory jigs. On non control surfaces, maybe bondo filler (knowing it will be removed at next paint). Try the salvage market. It usually turns up empty and if somebody has control surfaces, they know what they are worth.
  2. i can go with a proper polyester aircraft grade filler on the wings, or fuselage, but not on the control surfaces. Besides, they are dead flat, and would be almost impossible to fill wthout noticing.
  3. Quote: aerobat95 What needs to happen is Mooney needs to start making planes again.....I just dont understand how a company that makes such an awesome product can't stay in business.....Cessna and Piper make nice planes and all but nothing like a Mooney....Its heartbreaking.
  4. Quote: mikefox We also sent the computer to Century - they upgraded it for a lot of money but didn't find any specific problem. The pitch oscillation continued. So we changed the attitude indicator. It went away for a while but came back. We then re-wired everything, with new harnesses. Still a problem. Finally changed the AI again, and the problem disappeared - and the techs found broken slip rings inside the AI. Now the gremlin is back with us. So it is off to the instrument shop again!

  6. Quote: RJBrown Sure lets talk politics! It is a big part of the environment we fly in. After 11 posts that were on point someone got their panties in a twist. It is obvious that the person taking offence is for Obama. He is a "liberal" I have seen that liberals are the first to try and curb "free speech" when it disagrees with the hallowed liberal view. If a liberal can't argue a point they attack the other person. Don't be such a hypocrite. Lets talk airplanes Boeing Dreamliners to be exact. Some liberal progressive union pigeon in the Obama administration is trying to send jobs to China instead of North Carolina. That's Obamanomics!! The IDIOT is trying to kill America and you are to stupid to see it. Have I offended you yet? Good get off your high horse and quit being such a whiner. I try to keep my opinions neutral in an attempt to be polite. But vasco pulling his smug hypocritical left wing Bull, or should I say Donkey, $#1^ is too much. The comment about Obamanomics was just a way to frame the factors affecting the environment we fly in. I've owned a small business 30 years as of yesterday June first and I understand the reference. Do you understand the absurdity of borrowing you way out of debt? Spending your way to solvency? Obama acts as if he doesn't.
  7. 5600 hours you deduct 2-3k. not a big deal really.
  8. Quote: Kwixdraw I need a picture on the cooling baffle that mounts the air filter for a 201. Mine was broken when I bought the aircraft and the broken part was tossed and smoothed out. I'm rebuilding the baffles and airbox and need to see how this originally fit. Any help out there?
  9. Quote: ELT Unfortunately, you probably will want both. I use a 496 for a moving map that works 99% of the time. The iPad with Bad Elf ( you really need a waas gps in the iPad) has neat moving map presentation on both low altitude and sectional charts. However, on a flight yesterday the 496 lost gps for 5 seconds and the iPad gps was down much longer. The iPad is a very good paper chart replacement and with the Bad ELF a good VFR situational awareness tool. On the same flight over eastern NC the 3G was less than 50% working at 6,000 msl. The iPad is good but not a replacement for even a portable aviation GPS. It is another tool for your tool box.
  10. Quote: moodychief She has already laid out the specs that it can't fly any slower than what we have and cost no more to fly or maintain. That leads me to believe she wants me to get a bigger and faster Mooney.
  11. Quote: fantom As I posted earlier, those are my usual settings......100 ROP; 20-30 LOP. IIRC, the EGT riase LOP is about 50F. Not a big concern, but hotter isn't better. And yes CHT is peak ICP is lower, which is much better. Scott, are you using the 14.9 factor, to come up with power%?
  12. We had ours done when we bought it. The spar cap corrosion starts in a seam, either in the gear well or the center section, between the stub spar or spar cap layers. Intergranular corrosion looks similar but this starts in a seam. Its kinda messy but oil is easier to deal with than a corroded spar. Thats a 20-30K repair. Jim I hear you can clean the servo clutch with brake cleaner or contact cleaner.
  13. Quote: Bennett I considered the SL30 to go under the GTN750, but with good used 430Ws being relatively inexpensive, the delta between the two was low enough to make the 430W attractive. Of course I was comparing a new SL30 to a used 430W. I've had many hours using the 430W in other aircraft; it is a capable box, and with the GPS (and rudimentary moving map) it provides far more utility than the SL30. Panel space may be a consideration, and this is why I went for the remote audio. From my standpoint, the dollar difference i would have to pay for the 650 as compared to the (used) 430W, just wasn't worth it. In fact, I will add an Icarus GPSS roll converter to the GTN 750 to work with with the KAP 150 autopilot. This is far less expensive than the 750/650 combination, and will allow the autopliot to fly procedure turns and holds. I think this is better "bang for the buck". Just one guy's opinion.
  14. GTN updates are over a grand a year, BTW.
  15. Test, I'm overseas right now but sure, I can measure them when I get home. I measured a couple but I forgot the value. I do remember a couple looked fresh and most were severely worn. The engine had 1300 SMOH and I would bet some of those plugs were that old. Interestingly, the logs only show one plug being changed, though clearly 3-4 of them are good enough for a spare. Huge difference in how it runs. Like an electric motor.
  16. there is also this: http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library%5Crgstc.nsf/0/638E876D33F5A80F8625753F007AE969?OpenDocument from here and aircraft spruce: http://seatoneng.com/products.htm
  17. My J has two 5 amp "Buss F-01" fuses, available from www.mouser.com. they are not cheap, around 15$ each.
  18. that sounds great, espeically the 696 in an AirGizoms mount. We did an aera 500 this way with it above the audio panel front and center and it works great.
  19. now does anyone have rigging boards? My shop doesnt have them, although I am rigging the plane myself (under supervision)
  20. How many candlepower is this thing? Our XeVision 75W has 75,000 Candlepower, mroe than enough. The beam is a little narrow, but aimed properly, you can set leaves on fire.
  21. Quote: scottfromiowa '64 M20E that is exactly how I lean in cruise. Big pull then enrichen to first cylinder to peak then pull to 50 degree drop on EGT as indicated. I didn't think about that being the "Richest" cylinder, but as I am doing it backward (already LOP) and enrichening I suppose that is what I am finding the "richest" cylinder. I was running 80-100 LOP until recently. I have picked up some speed and flying at 10GPH indicated.
  22. Quote: flyguy241 I've had a couple of scarey events in airplanes. The first time, I was flying my old Cherokee 140 out of an airport in Nebraska. I took off on the short crosswind runway and just as the wheels clear, a cylinder cracked and fouled both spark plugs with oil. The climb performance on a Cherokee is not great to begin with, but on 3 cylinders it's much worse. I was too far down the runway to shut it down so I start looking for a place to set it down ahead of me. I never notice all of those radio towers in that direction before. Regardless, the little Cherokee was holding its own and I could make shallow turns without losing altitude, so I was able to nurse it back to the airport for an uneventful landing. Lucky it wasn't very hot that day and I was in a nice flat state like Nebraska. The next stop was the shop for a major overhaul.
  23. Maybe because Narco hanst had a competitive product in 20 years could be something to do with it.
  24. we also have an alcor single point egt that is straight up in the middle at takeoff. lean to that value for climb, until you drop below 25" MP while full throttle, then you can lean a little more even.
