  1. I second what Byron said.
  2. You can get a can of compass fluid from aircraft spruce for about $10. It will last you forever. If the hanger fairies are going to do their thing they might as well do it right.
  3. The original solvent was TCE. you can still get it as CRC Brake parts cleaner in the red can. The toxic stuff always works the best....
  4. Yes they can be a pain. Once you are regularly lubing your plane they will all start working. A greasy landing gear is a happy landing gear...
  5. Bummer, I hate it when that happens....
  6. The shop should be able to IRAN the MP gauge for less then that. You can usually have it bench tested between free and $50. For an overhaul they pretty much keep the case and replace everything else. Be very careful removing that gauge. put a wrench on the AN fittings so they don't turn and carefully remove the B nut on the hoses. If you don't you will twist the fittings in the instrument and your repair bill will escalate significantly.
  7. I wouldn't silicone them. First they don't leak and I think they are supposed to move a bit when the engine heats up and the cylinders expand. Even if they did leak, it's no big deal. It is a fuel injected engine the fuel comes from the injectors. I hate to say it but my engine was running a little funky once and when I pulled the cowl one of the risers had both bolts missing and was sitting about 1/2 inch below the flange. It still ran pretty good.
  8. On the back of the battery box
  9. This may sound kind of crude, but it works. Get a military/hiking compass with the sights. Stand about 50 feet away from the plane so nothing is affecting the compas and align the sights nose to tail. Adjust the plane till it is aligned the way you want.
  10. I have some time maintaining and flying an '80 231. The mixture distribution on the Lycoming is much better then the Continental TSIO360.
  11. Jose said: Turbo engines will not run as lean as non-turbo thus they consume more fuel. Mine will. I can run it 100 deg LOP before it starts to get rough. I get pretty close to the TIT limit doing that, but the cylinders are stone cold about 300 deg. #2 runs 280. That is at 29in and 2300. This is at 8 GPH getting about 21 MPG!
  12. FWIW nothing you do to an aircraft vacuum system will make it work harder. It is a positive displacement pump. The flow through it only depends on RPM. The stress on the pump is only determined by the suction level. The air either flows through the instruments's turbines or the vacuum regulator. The regulator is not really a regulator but an adjustable leak to the atmosphere. You could readjust the regulator to bring the vacuum back into spec, but it sounds like you may have a leak, which will allow unfiltered air into the pump possibly shortening its life.
  13. I have a 77 201 and it has a squat switch. The limit switch is a double throw switch it has normally closed and normally open contacts. The normally closed contacts stop the gear motor. The normally open contacts light the green light. It is possible for one set of contacts to fail and the other set to work. I would clean the switch with contact cleaner or tri flo.
  14. Hacksaw pita
  15. I owned an m20F for 19 years and flew it 4000 hours. Now I have a turbo 201 which I have had for 10 years and about 1000 hours. There was nowhere I couldn't go in my F, but I'd miss my turbo if I didn't have it.
  16. I have had the prop governor (H1) leak a substantial amount of oil from the internal seal at the oil pump. It will only leak when the engine is running. If you pull the left mag the fuel pump is pretty easy to get to.
  17. I thought the brake linings were 66-105
  18. FWIW, The King radios send base band audio to the indicators and all the decoding electronics is in the indicators. The Narco and Garmin radios have the decoding electronics in the radio box and just send the needle signals to the indicator. In either case the receiver and decoder functions are separate. I have fixed four separate king indicators with the same problem. The meter movement coils have yellow tape wrapped around the windings. The adhesive fails after 30 years or so and the end of the tape lifts off and blocks the movement of the needle. I fix them by cutting the end of the tape off with surgical scissors. This takes micro surgery on the instrument and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are very good with such things.
  19. The tail on my Mooney is painted red. It is the only proper color for a Mooney tail. Anybody who is flying with a tail that isn't red isn't doing it right and is putting themselves in danger......
  20. Everybody is always talking about minimums. Just staying current should qualify you to fly any approach to minimums. What concerns me is severe weather. Thunderstorms, Icing, severe turbulence. These are the things that scare the bejesus out of me. I think flying a nite approach to minimums is cool! There is nothing better then seeing the runway lights suddenly appear in front of you....
  21. There won't be any difference between running WOT with the Bracket air filter or just throttling back a bit with the current air filter. Save your money. Just pretend you have a turbo engine. I have to set my MP to about 3/4 throttle every time to limit my MP.
  22. Old age is reserved for those of us with the experience to handle it. Except for the eyes, ears, memory and the time it takes to recover from traumatic injury, I feel like a teenager!
  23. BTW I just got my 3rd class. and as far as I could see, if I was healthy enough to make it to the examiner, I would pass. I would rather spend the $90 on avgas. I have known a few pilots who had a hart attack and never flew again. They were perfectly capable of flying. How many fatalities are caused by incapacitated pilots? I have to figure that blown tires kill more people.
  24. I don't get the IFR restriction. Am I more likely to keel over in the clouds and crash into a school yard then when I am VFR?
  25. I do it all the time using my Dual XGPS150. It works great until it gets above FL380 then it just quits. I downloaded a firmware patch that was supposed to fix that, but it is still intermittent up high. It works great in the Mooney....
