Show Of Sparks Perpetually a problem
jamesm replied to druidjaidan's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Check and make sure that your ignition circuit breaker (if original) has not gone bad or gone intermittent on you. Years ago I had the original ignition/cigar CB go intermittent on me. I took me a while to find it since Cigar lighter was on same circuit. I had written off that couldn't be a CB since I had little faith in Cigarette connector connection but as it turned out it really was the CB. Hope this helps, James '67C -
I installed mine a few months back. the 70 ft altitude call out still throws me for a bit, but oddly the 5ft , 2ft and 1ft altitude call outs do not. The gear warning works a advertised. did a go around the other day. I had never tried out the gear call out before until a few days ago. Nice having extra layer of safety. Great product. James '67C

Is there certain search criteria that you use? in other words can you do an AD search as the airplane as a whole (Air frame,Engine,Propeller,Appliance)? or do you do separate search for airframe another search Engine, another search for propeller, another search for appliances? How do you deal with all changes in avionics I.E. fuel senders, and other components that have been replaced since original? Thanks, James

I just wish that the G5's had bigger font and selector cursor with a fatter box. I have purposely slow down when I go to selector cursor for change heading versus course and select vor / gps mode altimeter baro versus altitude bug. Also wish that Garmin had a way uploading/downloading configurations (at least download configuration) this would cut down configuration setup errors. Other than that I works great.

Hi, I am curious to know what sites or subscription based AD service people use. The old days they would send the Bi-weekly updates cd to the IA's but I am sure the have modernized by now have gone online. I can't seem to remember the names of companies that made these. The reason I ask is that I am preparing to check ride soon which requires proof AD compliance. So when switched IA several years back, the previous IA had the AD's in an excel spread sheet table easy to read that he would update at annual time. The current IA includes all AD's compliance list as part of the sign off. I noticed when I used the FAA DRs web site https://drs.faa.gov/browse/doctypeDetails I get quiet the variance of depending how I apply the filters as well as varying consistency which AD are applicable. I have an 1967 M20C with Lycoming 0-360A1D wide deck engine, hartzell scimitar top prop. Can't seem to make sense of this or be able to explain the discrepancies. I am over thinking this or ??? Thanks in advance, James

I am curious to know, if the European aviation authorities require the 8.33 mhz frequency spacing for the communication radio installed into the panel? is there a transmit power requirements for either Minimum wattage or maximum wattage for transmission? Thanks,

This is the part that I did not know. Somewhere I thought that I had read that was a wiring change. Thanks for clearing that up.

Argh! Another squawk! - Ignition
jamesm replied to goalstop's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If your system is original. The ignition switch provides grounding to magnetos. for the push to start potion of the ignition switch provides . if I remember correctly a voltage for the shower of sparks you should be hearing buzzing sound. You could have intermittent ignition circuit breaker which I had kind of bugger to find. I believe that the start portion of the ignition switch provides ground the starter contactor. -
It a little different in the avionics world that I have been in. I am not trying undercut anyone. Besides the person who installed my ads-b screwed it up. I had clean up after them. I would agree that the autopilot are flight critical since dealing with flight controls. But getting a schematic come on. Besides it better getting directly from a trusted source then some bootleg copy off the internet.

that is kind of my point, most dealers are back logged and up in the PNW wx crappy so your probably no going any where for few months. how is exactly is this suppose to work. If I had drawings I could at least do a continuity check or have a look of work that need to be performed.

how does one obtain Master Drawing List 005-01264-00, Revisions 1 through 76 ?

I had switch from Insight G3 to CGR I elected to go with CGR since it has a bigger screen larger font. I was able to reused the insight thermocouple for EGT and CHT's from Insight engine monitor. I think I had to replace 2 egt probes in 12 years and had loose cht probe. Probably cause by starting technique. Insight uses a #4 lug ring terminal for their connections. Also I believe that Insight uses both J & K type thermocouples for CHT's black wire J type and K type yellow wire for EGT probes . Not Sure if have thermocouple with tighter temperature range for the CHT's would make a difference or not.

STC for moving the battery location
jamesm replied to Yourpilotincommand's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
What !!!!! No 'C' model Will it support Electronic ignitions SureFly or Electro Air?? -
Shameless plug for EI CGR 30C/P engine monitor. The CGR monitor both magnetos and tells which mag is grounded out. Some may say it's not that big of a deal. I would disagree. I have SureFly electronic ignition module and a keyless ignition switch. That thing runs so smooth that it would be so easy to take off on one magneto. So having a annunciator indicating which mag is grounded is essential. I am not certain if JPI or Garmin does or does not. I know insight does not. Just my opinion. James '67C

Retractable step servo seal #1551 source?
jamesm replied to brownm's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If you really want vacuum boot assembly. I have one for you. Am sure plenty others Mooney owners that have them, ready to part with. Like many others have done auto step flight enhancements electric actuator. https://flightenhancements.com/auto-step.html Hope this helps, James '67C -
1994 Mooney was stilling fiberglass insulation. thought Mooney had SI/SB/SL to remove it since had potential to absorb water and/or trap it against the metal corrosion?
-
My rational for installing it is to hopefully keep the first time nervous flyer passenger at ease. It doesn't look too professional if I told the first time flyer. If the door opens in flight and I tell them don't worry about it.
-
Holy smokes... I actually found the photo after going through 2 phones of pictures. maybe not greatest photo.
-
Good concentration. Thanks it confirms what I heard about the door opening in flight on Mooney's. I have had the door open a couple of times but I reached over grabbed it before it stayed open too long. I have since then pull a spring on latch so the handle has a little tension on it.

If they had increased the exit air volume from the cowl the before certification !!!!! . this probably wouldn't be a discussion item/topic. but when air trying to escape from the opening it came in through , this is not good. So here we are .. my left side of my engine cylinder get hot on a regular basis (under able to figure out a consistent pattern or root cause) and there nothing or very limited modifications that I can do according to the FAR 43 without it being major modification/alteration. I really like the Cowl Saver from Mcfarlane. I have had the cowl save on my well over 10 years no trouble at all. I have had the cowl off count less number of times it works great. https://www.mcfarlaneaviation.com/articles/cowl-saver-baffle-seal-material-now-even-better/ James '67C

I was having my turn coordinator die or at least having to pull it to troubleshoot every 3 to 4 years. As much as I wanted install a third G5 to replace the turn coordinator. The Garmin G5 STC won't allow me install a 3rd G5. I have to choose between Attitude indicator or Turn coordinator. I was getting annoyed and went the expensive route installed a RCA 2610-3P Mini 6 from RC Allen. It's more money than the G5 but it has all the associated TSO's for it's functions (Airspeed,Altimeter, Heading, Rate or turn, ball, Rate of climb, 3hrs back battery up). It my understanding the AV-30C , Garmin G5 , Dynon where qualified under Non Required Safety Enhancing Equipment (NORSEE) equipment and a STC. I am not sure if AV-30C STC would allow change out both the Attitude and Turn Coordinator with one instrument. The referenced AC91-75 document calls out the TSO-C4c, Bank and Pitch Instrument. I don't believe the NORSEE equipment fall under the TSO'd category of certification though could be wrong on this. It may sound foolish, but I figured that AC91-75 allows me to replace my Turn coordinator with an attitude indicator since both instruments were TSO'd instruments. In theory my installation should be "Legal" in the eyes of the FAA. Plus having a standby instrument made from totally different company less likely software bug/feature totally grounding me at least in theory. The RCA 2610-3P Mini 6 Holds: TSO-C4c, TSO-C113a, TSO-C3e and TSO-C6e, TSO-C2d, TSO-C10c and TSO-C8e. I can switch between Mag head and ground track it also has heading/ altitude bugs. it has a bit cumbersome menu probably the location makes most awkward to use but never the less it works. Though the headings between the G5 and RCA 2610-3P rarely seem to perfectly agree. but probably more reliable than vacuum instruments or whiskey compass. One thing I really like about Garmin equipment is that their rotary encoders on all the products I own are solid they have real nice positive detent to the feel. Whereas the RC Allen, Aspen, Sandia and other equipment that I have used it was too easy to bump and change a setting. Just my 2 cents, James '67C

PIREP: LASAR Oil Cooler Relocation Kit
jamesm replied to Mooney-Shiner's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Did the Oil cooler relocation kit come with power and ground battery cables was it more than just oil cooler relocation involved i.e. Power Relay and/or starter relay ? I take it you had to relocate your battery on the firewall to the old tube radio rack near the tail? Thanks, James '67C -
here a source that has been around to answer model question / comment see link below. My 67'C has gained weight over the years it's now at approx 1643lbs empty weight and about 45.8" arm and gross wt 2575lbs limit with 52 gallon tanks, 26 gallons per side for a total of 312lbs of fuel. Someone had put the link below together which ranges 1948 -2006 of the differences in the Mooney models http://www.mooneyevents.com/chrono.htm in short (sorry bad pun) the short bodies are A,B,C,D,E Mid sized bodies are the F,G,J,K I am not sure where the dividing line is between the Mid size bodies and Long bodies. I am guessing that the Ovation and Acclaims would be in the Long body category. hope this helps, James '67C

You may want to confirm that 'E' model uses the same setting. I can see why it wouldn't but there could be a reason for it. It's probably a #6 slotted screw head and I think it's a 1/4" nut. You just need to break them loose. sorry I can't seem to find pictures of the switch but if I do I will add them.
