  1. I just an instrument student, and thought that you guys that have been flying instruments for a while found do more with less fields. Personally I have 8 but it takes GNC355 and GNX375 (2) 2 " navigator to achieve 8 fields. I get a bit annoyed when have to go missed approach pops up and covers the lower part of screen covering 2 fields.
  2. Hi Don, So on the AERA. 760 you can get 8 optional user defined fields on the map page? James
  3. Where I was going with this is that aera560 map page had duplicate I.e dtk and dist after nav data base update . I am not 100% sure that happened during the update I just happened to notice it then. so all the 4 quadrants of map page/screen having duplicate fields on map page. just my personal preference. I wish I could have more fields.
  4. Interesting you brought that up. I will have to check this out but, I just updated with the current cycle into my AERA 560 portable GPS. It had been update in quiet a while since my last update. went to put the airport into and noticed that there were duplicate fields on the map page. that I didn't recall being there on the map page. I was learning/practicing circling approaches and put the airport in AERA so I stay within circling area boundaries distance field being displayed to airport. See what happens the next Database cycle in a few days. My AERA 560 is standalone so no data/serial connection to my other panel mounted GPS's. James '67C
  5. You maybe pass this point ... The only one or 2 times that I had to get into the tanks. I found skin wedge and plastic scrapping tool help along with a lot patience working it and working it and then finally it starts giving way. stating the obvious you do NOT want nick or damage receiver plate inspection plate mounts to. https://www.yardstore.com/sheet-metal-hand-tools/miscellaneous/skin-wedges Good Luck on your project. 6. I don't recall that Magneto Gear being recessed but I haven't had to remove the SureFly SIM, so my memory might be a little sketchy. Once we got the Magneto gear installed correctly, timing was easy. I had bought separate Magneto gear My thought was if the SureFly thing didn't live up to the expectation I could slip back in the original Bendix magneto. The Surefly has been running no problems since ~2019. Same with the Plane Power Alternator installed in 2007 before that there was STC kit available. I used the Mooney Alternator conversion Drawing and substituted Plane power for the Prestolite ALYxxx Alternator and Zeftronics Voltage regulator had to get a slightly different belt because the popular size was belt was too long. Absolutely no trouble except maybe snugged the belt once in ~ 17 years. The same with the Skytec starter the housing was found loose during annual several years back but I has been in stalled since 2004. So in my opinion for what it's worth, Jason and team at SureFly, SkyTec, PlanePower has done me right. James '67C
  7. All solder sleeve aren't created equal just like tools and most everything else. When I use to work at a large commercial aircraft manufacture company in the PNW during the late 80's. We had both solder sleeves (we called Zaps) and mechanical ferrules. Hardly ever used the mechanical ferrules style connection just to show you how to make one but that was about it maybe in high vibration area of the aircraft. The solder sleeves that we used (Raychem if my memory is correct) required gun that used an infrared heat source to melt solder sleeve and heat gun was not to be used. I believe that these solder sleeves were made to a certain specification and probably not the same ones you can buy online someplace. I have notice a quite a difference in quality in the various in solder sleeves from the cheap knock off versions from amazon and even different one that I have bought from reputable well known aviation source. Just my observations, James '67C
  8. years ago when I had a generator on a '67C with the same setup Delco Remy 50A generator and Zeftronics Regulator. I was having a bit of issue with the Generator charging, Since I wasn't flying frequently back then, it wasn't too uncommon that I would have flash the generator field. One day I decided that generator had been on the airplane for a long while a thought it was probably a good time just to replace the generator. Since it probably getting close to time to replace brushes and bearings and replacing the original generator with an overhauled (reman) generator seem like a reasonable thing to do. However the overhauled generator didn't meet it was either the Zeftronic's resistance measurements specifications or Delco overhauled specifications, not sure if the Zeftronics still this information on their web or not. When I called the Generator overhaul place they claimed that there was nothing wrong with the generator and it was Zeftronics voltage regulator problem. Rather then getting caught of the finger pointing between the generator overhaul and Zeftronics requirements. I returned the overhauled generator. Since I couldn't get the the overhauled generator to work with the Zeftronics Regulator. I put back the the originator Generator and I flashed the field of the original generator along with the Zeftronics regulator worked fine. This was my experience hope this helps. James '67C
  9. I read that you cleaned up the contacting surface of the battery shelf for the ground. Would there be any benefit from running a separate ground to engine compartment (other than more weight)? I was thinking in terms in corrosion (dissimilar metals ?) and improving conductivity? Could there less noise generated, if a separate ground was ran? I was thinking in terms of (G5's) magnetometer, autopilot (GFC500 CAN bus ) servo(s) , rotating beacon and com antennas are back there in the tail section. Thanks in advance, James '67C
  10. Did you have to increase the cable size (AWG) when relocating battery to Aft of baggage compartment location? How noticeable is it in pitch axis after relocation on a short body C/E model? Thanks, James '67C
  11. so am I reading /understanding Note 1 correctly for the Short Body C Models. 15 lbs/6lbs/gal = 2.5 Gal total ? or 1.25 Gal per side? If I recall correctly ... there was Mooney an earlier model C landed in at my home airport RNT (Renton, WA) after having icing or a shitty PNW weather encounter. I believe he declared an emergency the engine had died on him on short final as he lowered the engine engine came back to life giving him enough to make it to the runway. As I recall he had landed with 2.5 gallons a board or may have been dry either way I would not want to find myself in this situation. I have been way too chicken to try it lowest I ever gotten it ~ 6 gal on one side and I was near airport with open area. Thanks James '67C
  12. if that is 9v I am seeing on your schematic drawing.... If that's 3v drop that seems high to me, I am sure by now the you have clean all your contact and check the condition of wiring and made that they are all tight. maybe put ACF50 or like to prevent future corrosion. hope that helps, James '67C
  13. I just had mine changed this year by my IA I didn't get see the whole thing being done from start to finish but I had changed the mains about 2000's year mark . Nose gear pucks were right at the limits and the pucks/disks/discs were older than me (10/66) had me by a couple of months. for some reason right main was just inside the limits and left main was ok. Not sure how right main was more compressed the the left main pucks. should be go to for a while now.
  14. Don't rule out an intermittent circuit breaker Ignition/Cigar lighter especially if the old big fat red/black button type. I had one go intermittent on me since connected to the cigarette lighter plug took me while to find. since I immediately assumed it was poor connection in cigarette lighter voltmeter connection. turns out the CB had gone intermittent.
  15. I use to do it the difficult way if the Generator was outputting the expected voltage. I would take it off and take it to wrecking yard put on their test stand and make sure they know to run it reverse. and I made sure there was the correct voltage was outputting. In those days I wasn't flying as frequently so It would loose it's retentivity "Flash" over time.
  16. Being that GPS it's single point of failure and not easy serviceable as ground based systems at my understanding. The world strive could cause one of these unstable or rouge nation(s) (north Korea or Iran or some other nation) create havoc on the rest of us if they start launching into space. In 90's I heard something about the I think it was called ALS (Advance Landing System) it made use of already existing equipment in our plane. I think Transponder and CDI as I recalled you were assigned a discrete transponder code and some how it tied in to CDI for course lateral and vertical guidance. I haven't heard to much activity on that topic I think heard mentioned but no real pursuit. I would nice to another low cost back up alternative should the GPS system outage becomes the new norm.
  17. Keep in mind that various Mooney M20C model years especially in mid 60's had different size fuel tanks. Some fuel tanks were 52 gallon capacity, which has 26gal 156Lbs a side while other earlier years, I think some where 48 gallons 24 gallons /144lbs a side. I believe the tank sender resistance changed as well. my 67'C 52 gal 156Lbs a side indicated on fuel Gauge is a 30Ω. I am not sure but I think that the later year 'C' models like in the 70's may change the resistances for the fuel senders again. James '67C
  18. for AD's you could try https://drs.faa.gov/browse/ADFRAWD/doctypeDetails AD's you would probably have to go to each manufacture web site
  19. I might be interested... Do you know if there is a shelf life Intake boots? if so do you know how long?
  20. Here is a post that I did on the RCAllen RCA2610-3P mini6 instrument. Hope this helps, James '67C
  21. To clarify my previous post .... I stuck with more tradition route, Used the overly priced Electroair EA-15000 switch panel. I would have rather of used off the shelf higher quality switches. Didn't want to draw attention or create potential of what category is my ignition switches are they minor or major repair/alteration problem/discussion/conversation . James
  22. I have one installed in '67C a couple of things that bothers me, is start button has no real guard around it. so if you bump the start switch or if a unsupervised/curious person decides to press the red button, because everybody like pressing the red button, especially the red button you are not supposed to press it will turn over the prop. I pull the ignition CB to prevent this. The rocker switches are kind of cheesy and could have deeper guard around them to protect inadvertently bumping the mag switch(es). The other thing is with SureFly ignition installed, the engine runs so smooth on my left magneto it is real easy to start the engine and then taxi forgetting to turn on my right magneto. What is great about the EI CGR30C/P engine monitor has indication above RPM/Tach showing me when the magneto is off. If you have two magneto installed they don't provided you the wring diagram to incorporate the shower of sparks (starter vibrator) circuitry. When going from the Bendix ignition key switch push to start switch to the two rocker switches push to start switch. I have had it installed for about 4 plus years no problems, it works great. Just my observations. James
  23. I have the RCA2610-3P Mini 6 to replace my Turn coordinator. I can only assume that they are similar minus the Pitot Static connections, Attitude, Altimeter, Airspeed (knots only), and rate of turn functions. The RCA2610-3P unit does tie into pitot static system in it and the Pitot Static lines are opposite sides of the G5's the and the RCA battery & battery management seems to be week (on my 3rd battery didn't want break Pitot static system to sent it in) great support. I also have 2 G5's which has some known heading issues with as well. So when there is a heading difference between the G5 and the RCA or the Whiskey compass, for me, It really hard to tell by time that I noticed the heading error whether it's G5 or whiskey compass or RCA magnetometer as to which one is the accurate one. Since I am usually busy flying, I haven't figured out a way to determine who is correct. For most part they all agree it may take a little more time to come into agreement. Since I have tremor in my hands, I really like Garmin's tactile knob feed back when you turn their knob(s) the RCA is not so noticeable it more like a Aspen not so pronounced as Garmin. But it sure beats vacuum processing non slave DG's and it's nice having a heading bug for my Instrument training. Just my 2 cents, James '67C
  24. Did you mean Mooney ? or in the future you are planning Mooney refurb kit or??
  25. Perhaps I didn't articulate what I was trying say very well.... But as you stated below should generate less questions and less suspicion by the DPE, that is what I am going for. Thanks again, James
